Imports are purchases of goods made by a country from other countries.
Imports are subtracted within the balance of trade. When they are greater than exports the balance of trade is negative, i.e., there is a trade deficit.
The fact that imports reduce the balance of trade does not mean they are negative. They bring some benefits to the economy. For example, buying products cheaper than they can be produced in the country creates savings, investment and consumption of other products by consumers. This increases production and the wealth of the country concerned. Additionally, imports allow a country to acquire raw materials that do not exist in the country and it can thus produce goods which otherwise could not be manufactured there.
