EU-Canada summit

On Wednesday, MEPs and the Commission will discuss their expectations for the EU–Canada summit taking place in Montreal on 29-30 October.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney will host European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President António Costa just weeks after the Commission President in her annual State of the Union speech invited Canada to become the EU’s first “associate member”.

Addressing the European Parliament at the plenary session in September, Carney called for the deepening and widening of the relationship between the EU and Canada, to form an “alliance for the future”.

At the summit, the leaders are expected to focus on: trade; defence and security; energy and critical minerals; and technology.
