Pharmacists, Nurses & Allied Healthcare Professionals
The British College of Dermatology (BCD), the educational arm of the BAD, supports dermatology education of pharmacy colleagues, Physician Associates (PAs), nurses and all other Allied Healthcare Professionals (AHP). These are an essential part of the dermatology healthcare team.
Community pharmacists are often the first point of contact for those suffering from minor skin ailments. They must be aware of the red flags which indicate that referral for medical assessment is needed. Pharmacists who work in secondary and tertiary care dermatology departments provide a unique skillset and invaluable expertise.
A number of innovative models of work exist across the UK with specialist pharmacists as integral leads within the team. We are keen to expand the collaborative working between dermatologists and pharmacists, this work is supported by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
Information on making a business case for specialised pharmacists, or job descriptions for these roles, can be found here.
Dermatological nursing is a highly specialised area of practice with nurses providing care and treatment for a growing number of patients with dermatological conditions. The BCD, along with British Dermatological Nursing Group, has developed a dermatology nursing role descriptor to help support recruitment, retention and career development of nurses in the specialty and should serve as a foundation for planning education and training initiatives.
PAs and AHPs are diverse and varied professional groups. The BCD seeks to promote dermatology education and training across all these groups. This includes First Contact and Advanced Clinical Practitioners and Physician Associates. A number of educational resources in dermatology are available to all NHS healthcare professionals, and the BCD seeks to improve basic understanding of skin health to all of those in workforce. We also aim develop those who are interested further, for advanced practice in dermatology to support both community and secondary care services.
