This dedication to excellence has earned Providence Saint John’s the highest levels of achievement in emergency heart and stroke care from the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association. Additionally, the Emergency Department is recognized as a Comprehensive Stroke Center by the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and quality assurance and risk management service Det Norske Veritas.
Originally built to accommodate 10,000 patients per year, the Emergency Department has seen a dramatic increase in volume. Over 35,870 visits were recorded in 2025 and the demand for services is expected to continue rising, with an estimated 37,000 patients anticipated in 2026.

Retired dentist Byron Vreeland has earmarked a gift to the Saint John’s Health Center Foundation in his estate plans to benefit the emergency department at Providence Saint John’s Health Center.
His philanthropy will benefit patients for many years to come. “I’ve been taken to that emergency department a couple of times,” Dr. Vreeland says. “Saint John’s is a great hospital... I want to leave what I have to where it will make the most difference. There is nothing more important than a community’s hospital.”
