JANEuary

@janeuary-month

Janeuary 2026 is a month-long fandom event celebrating the works and world of Jane Austen. Fanworks of all kinds are welcome. See pinned post for rules. Organized by @FiraWren

Well we have made it halfway through the month, and so far have 162 fanworks created for the event! That is already almost the total for the entire month in 2025 (172 fanworks)!

Remember, it's not too late to submit something for any of the days that have passed already.

But creating the fanworks is only part of it—just as important are the reblogs and comments from everyone showing your appreciation and support for the incredible creations. It has given the event such a positive atmosphere that makes it fun for everyone. Thank you!

Be sure to keep checking out the AO3 collection too, since some works are only posted there, not on Tumblr.

A special thank you to @bad-at-names-and-faces who has been helping reblog your creations all month!

Onward to the second half of Janeuary!

Off to a great start!

Janeuary has started strong with so many different types of fanworks across different fandoms! It's so lovely to see the variety, as well as the huge talent that the creators have. I'm so impressed already, and there is so much more to come!

If you're thinking "Oh no, I missed posting on day 1! Guess I won't finish it"—you're mistaken.

You can still post your day 1 fanwork.

Post it today or tomorrow or whenever you're ready. Remember, late entries are always welcome!

(We won't be doing daily posts like this from now on, but wanted to make sure everyone got this reminder one last time.)

Janeuary 2026 starts in 2 days!

A few quick reminders…

👉 Give the creators some love!

Make sure to reblog, share, give kudos to, and comment on the fanworks posted in Janeuary! Tell the creators how much you appreciate them 💕

👉 Tag @janeuary-month when you post

If you’re participating in the event, the most important thing to be sure to do is to tag the @janeuary-month account in your Tumblr post for your work so we can see it and reblog it from this account. Read the full posting instructions, including how to post to the AO3 collection, here.

👉 Take a quick look at the full rules again

In summary, your work needs to follow one of the daily prompts, be new for the event, not use AI, and include either an Austen character, Austen adaptation character, Austen herself, OR Austen-like setting regardless of fandom.

👉 Still have questions?

Check the FAQ, or send us an ask or DM, here or @firawren

👉 We’re happy to accept late entries!

We understand that life happens, so just tag us when you’ve posted it and we’ll reblog it, even weeks later. The AO3 collection will remain open for the entire year.

Have fun, be kind, and happy Janeuary!

With October and all its fanfic prompt lists just around the corner, I, as a fan of oneshots, want to beg anyone posting to AO3 to please post your works individually and not cram the whole month into one big multichapter work.

Anthologies of short fics on AO3 cause huge obnoxious hurdles for anyone wanting to find or avoid works like yours, and also muck up the numbers for anyone doing a stats dive.

Anything real that someone might try to accomplish with an anthology can be better accomplished with a series or with tags.

Teal deer: I want to read your promptober fics. Post them as fics and not as fake chapters so I can find them and read them.

--

Here's the nitty gritty.

Anthologized works cannot be filtered for word or chapter counts:

I like to read fic under 5k, so I do this:
AO3's wordcount search criteria, set to find works with fewer than 5000 words
ALT
Someone else likes longfic, so they do this:
Only people who do NOT want to see oneshots will see your oneshots.

--

All tags on anthologies cannot be trusted and must be assumed to be inaccurate:

This is true of literally every tag on an anthology, including fandoms, ships, categories (m/m, f/f, etc.), and archive warnings. I want to read Cleric Beast/Hunter vivisection fic. Someone else wants to read Cleric Beast/Hunter fic and is squicked out by vivisection. Your anthology features a Cleric Beast/Hunter coffee shop date fic and a Sam/Dean vivisection fic, and therefore carries both tags. I find a coffee shop fic I don't care to read, and the other person never finds the Cleric Beast/Hunter coffee shop date fic of their dreams because they're filtering out vivisection. Mad lib that example with literally any combination of tags and it's the same. Only people who do not want to read the anthologized fics will find them. (PS the tag for Cleric Beast/Hunter doesn't exist, I should get on that)

--

Anthologies throw false positives for crossovers:

According to AO3's search filter, a crossover is any work which carries tags for more than one distinct fandom. In our example above, Bloodborne and SPN fics were anthologized together. Neither fic is a crossover, but the anthology will be removed from searches that exclude crossovers, and will spam the search results of anyone looking specifically for Bloodborne or SPN crossovers.

--

The ratings on anthologies cannot be trusted:

An anthology must be labeled for the highest rated fic it contains. If you anthologize porn without plot or ultra graphic vivisection in the same work as as tooth rotting fluff, the whole thing will have to be labelled as explicit (or unrated). People looking for explicit work will find the the G rated fluff, people looking for G rated fluff will filter it out because it's erroneously labeled as explicit. Only the people who do not want to read the work will find it. Are we noticing the pattern here?

--

To break the pattern a bit:

Individually posted short works belong on the archive.

Archive of Our Own is aptly named, it's an archive. It is designed to house fanworks, all fanworks, no matter how small, and the search function is designed to make those fanworks easy to find and sort. You are not "spamming" by archiving any quantity of correctly labeled archive materials. If someone clicks on a tag and sees a front page full of your works and decides they hate you, they can just filter out your username or change the sort criteria. But chances are they'll go "sweet, twenty new works for the thing I searched for!"

--

Anthologies muck up the statistics.

I do a fair bit of searching AO3 to grab numbers rather than to find fics to read. For these numbers to have any meaning, we have to assume that the fics that show up in the searches are correctly labeled.

If I run two searches like this, I can say that these characters have about the same amount of fic. But anecdotally, Elden Ring oneshots are anthologized more often than Silmarillion oneshots. Perhaps there are actually more Ranni fics on AO3 than Turin fics, and they're lumped together and hidden from the site stats while more of the Turin fics are being counted individually.

If I wanted to dig deeper and crunch some numbers, the problem would intensify. What if I wanted to scrape all the metadata and say there were so many millions of words of Ranni fic? If I wanted that to be accurate, I'd have to manually go through nearly one thousand works to exclude the "chapters" (that is, entire fics) that aren't fics with Ranni in them and have been falsely included in the Ranni tag.

And all this assumes that an anthology tagged "Ranni the Witch (Elden Ring)" even has Ranni in it at all. Overtagging is always an issue, but anthologies are often tagged for future fics the author intends to write and include later; not even trace-of-nuts tagging, but literally tagging a fic that does not exist. (I see this with highly specific kink tags on kinktober fill anthologies often enough that it's a personal pet peeve in addition to a data accuracy pet peeve).

From another angle, is the sidebar for the Elden Ring tag that reports 2200 slash fics to 760 femslash fics accurate? Is it safe to assume that slash is anthologized at the same rate as femslash in the Elden Ring fandom? I've seen anthologies with "chapter" counts in the hundreds, how different would the sidebar look if all those fics were accurately labeled?

--

But Osterby, what if someone wants to subscribe to my kinktober fills but not my other work?

Put it in a series.

--

What if someone doesn't want to see my coffee shop AU fic while scrolling through my profile which is primarily vivisection kink fic?

Thanks for thinking of me! I'll filter out the coffee shop AU tag, or I'll scroll through your vivisection kink series.

--

How will people know what order to read my loosely connected oneshots in?

That's what a series is for.

--

How will someone find all my works with the same OC/setting/kink/trope/fandom?

Series. Or tags. You can give your own OCs and AU settings their own custom tags.

--

How will someone subscribe to my kinktober fills if they're not all in the same work?

The AO3 buttons for subscribing to and bookmarking a series
ALT

--

What if someone doesn't want to filter and still hates my works?

Skill issue. On their part. Don't prioritize haters over both your intended audience and over people who want to filter out 99% of your work and still want to read that one Cleric Beast/Hunter coffee shop fic. And also you should block haters, not try grovel to them.

--

What if I want to bury a fic between other stuff and make it harder to find?

Try minimal tagging, nonspecific tags, empty or uninformative summary, and archive locking.

--

If you've stuck with me this long, I've probably convinced you to at least look into the series function.

To create a new series, just make up the name for it while posting (or editing) a fic. It's a ticky box under "associations", right above the "this work has multiple chapters" ticky.

--

And if you need more convincing, a series will allow your readers to leave kudos on each of your fics. Wouldn't it be nice to get 31 kudos from me instead of just one? Pretty please let me kudos each of your shorts as I read through your entire bibliography in one go.

This is by no means a requirement for posting fics for Janeuary, but I would encourage authors to use a series if you're posting an anthology of unrelated fics for the event, for all the excellent reasons listed above.

I'll add an additional reason: a series makes it easier to keep track of what I have and haven't read yet. There is going to be a bunch of new Austen fic posted all at once next month, and many of us will not be able to keep up. We will want to keep track of which stories are still on our TBR list. This is a lot easier if the story is its own standalone fic, rather than a chapter in an anthology. It's hard to remember "I already read chapters 3, 4, 16, and 20 from this fic, but I still want to read chapters 9, 10, 17, 25, and 29." Divide those all up, and it becomes easy to see where I've already left kudos and what is still "marked for later."

Again, not a requirement (the official event-specific posting instructions are here) but please consider it!

Posting instructions for Janeuary 2026

Janeuary 2026 is just around the corner! The most important thing you need to know for posting to the event is to tag the @janeuary-month account within the body of your Tumblr post. Here's what else you need to know for posting your fanwork:

👉 When

Post your work on the day of the prompt you're using.

👉 Where

Post to AO3, Instagram, Tumblr, FFN, X, Bluesky, Wattpad, or wherever you normally post your stuff.

👉 How, on AO3

For fic, there's an AO3 collection named “janeuary_2026” set up for the event here. To add to the collection, you can either follow the link and click “post to collection,” or you can post a new work on your own and search for “janeuary_2026” in the “Collections” line. You can already post drafts for all days and finished fics for day 1 to the collection, because the collection won’t be revealed until January 1. If you post a draft to it after January 1, it won’t be shown until you publish, but be sure to change your publication date to the date you publish so your work shows at the top of the list.

👉 How, on Tumblr

Post a link to your work in a Tumblr post on your prompt’s day. Be sure your Tumblr post contains the following:

  • Which day/prompt(s) your creation is for
  • Tag the @janeuary-month account within the body of the post itself by using the @ symbol, typing janeuary-month, and then selecting that account name from the autocomplete menu that appears. This is the only way to be sure we see your post so we can reblog it from this account and include it in our stats posts.
  • The event hashtag #janeuary and/or #janeuary 2026
  • Content warning hashtags (NSFW, common triggers, etc.)
  • Optional: other hashtags (fandom, characters, ship, etc.)
  • Optional: the event banner (save image from the top of this post)

👉 Remember!

Take a quick look at the full rules again too. In summary, your work needs to follow one of the daily prompts, be new for the event, not use AI, and include either an Austen character, Austen adaptation character, Austen herself, OR Austen-like setting. We also have a list of FAQs, and you can DM with any further questions.

We’re happy to accept late entries! We understand that life happens, so just tag us when you’ve posted it and we’ll reblog it, even weeks later. The AO3 collection will remain open for the entire year.

We hope you’ll join us!

FAQ for Janeuary 2026

Janeuary 2026 is coming soon! Here are answers to some questions I’ve gotten or that you may be wondering about before participating in the event:

Can I join?

Yes! This is an open event with no sign-ups. You don’t need to notify me or get my permission. Everyone is welcome.

Do I have to do something for every one of the prompts?

No! Just one is fine. You can do more if you wish, or multiple works for the same prompt, but none of this is necessary. The list of prompts is here.

Can I combine prompts?

Sure! Just please note in your post all the prompts you’re using. If possible, post your work on the earliest day for the prompts shown in it, and we’ll reblog it on that day, but we’ll tag it with all the days/prompts you used. For instance, if you draw a pic of a character adjusting his cravat (day 27) in his looking glass (day 12), post on day 12 and state in your post that it’s meant for both prompts.

Do I have to create my art/fic/whatever on the day itself?

Nope. Create it now, and just hold off on posting it until the day of the prompt you used.

Does my fic/art need to take place in Regency England, or are AUs allowed?

As long as you have at least one Austen-work or Austen-adaptation character, you can stick them in whatever universe you wish. However, if you want to use all non-Austen characters, they need to be in an Austen universe. So, for day 13 “card playing,” you could draw Sonic the Hedgehog playing whist in a Regency drawing room OR you could draw Darcy and Bingley playing poker in modern-day Las Vegas, and either of these would be totally acceptable.

Also, keep in mind that you can use a “Jane Austen-like AU” per the rules. This means your setting doesn’t necessarily have to be Regency England precisely. It could be a fantasy land with clearly Regency-like manners, dress, and speech. Bilbo and Thorin can still live in Middle Earth in the third age as long as Middle Earth in the third age has been transformed to mimic Regency England.

Completely canon-compliant works are of course also allowed!

Can I include non-Austen characters in my creations?

Sure! As long as you have at least one Austen-work or Austen-adaptation character, OR place your work in an Austen-like AU, you can include whatever other characters you wish. Characters from other media, OCs, reader inserts, they’re all fine.

And remember that there is no bashing of others’ characters or ships! Accounts that do so will get blocked. Review the full list of rules here.

What does it mean that the work has to be new?

Basically, it can’t have been posted anywhere before. BUT this means that a new chapter on an old fic is totally valid! So is taking an old line drawing and coloring it and then posting the new colored version. That sort of thing.

And the work doesn’t have to be completed before the end of the month either, so if you have a long-running fic that has been going for years already and is going to keep going far after next January, you can still participate by working the prompts into a chapter or two during the month and then carrying on as you like afterwards.

Can I make [fill in the blank fanwork]?

Yep. Any type of fanwork you can dream up is welcome, not just fic and art. Crochet a bonnet for day 18 and post a pic of it, make a photo montage of yourself doing Emma cosplay, edit together a Bride and Prejudice music video, we love it all!

Is NSFW allowed?

Yes, with any sort of content and kink you like, but since there may be minors following this account, please tag it appropriately. If posting mature content directly on Tumblr rather than AO3, also use its community labels function and/or hide the content under a “keep reading” link. And minors—do not engage with content that is not meant for you.

Is AI allowed?

Absolutely not. This account will not reblog or include in the AO3 collection anything that was made with AI involved to any degree. Even if you just use AI to make a banner to go along with your fic that you manually wrote, we will not reblog it. Review the full list of rules here.

How do I post my work so it gets included?

You must tag the @janeuary-month account in your Tumblr post for us to see it and reblog it from this account. Also, state which day/prompt you’re following and use the hashtag #janeuary and/or #janeuary 2026. Full posting instructions will be shared closer to the event.

Should I post my fic on AO3 or Tumblr?

Whatever you prefer. If you post it on AO3 and also make a Tumblr post to link to it, we will reblog the Tumblr post. If you only post to the AO3 collection, we will have nothing to reblog, but it will still be in the collection for others to find that way.

I don’t post my art on Tumblr; can I still participate?

You’re welcome to post your creation wherever you like, but without a Tumblr post, we have nothing to reblog to make it officially part of the event. But, if you post elsewhere (Instagram, BlueSky, X, DeviantArt, etc.), you can also post a link to your own work on your own Tumblr, and then we can reblog your Tumblr post.

I don’t write in English; can I still participate?

Yes! All languages are welcome—just make sure to clearly mark the day/prompt so that we can still easily reblog.

I’m not going to get my work done on time; can I still participate?

Please do! We’re happy to accept late entries! We understand that life happens, so just tag us when you’ve posted it and we’ll reblog it, even weeks later. The AO3 collection (coming soon) will remain open indefinitely.

Also, remember that the work doesn’t have to be completed before the end of the event, just the portion of it that’s connected to the prompt. For instance, you can start a fic on day 31 for the "dearest" prompt by just posting that one completed chapter, and then after the month is over keep adding more chapters to it.

How can I connect with the other people participating in this event?

Building personal connections between those in our fandom community is the best part of events like this, so while there’s no Discord server specifically for this event, there is the very active and positive “Jane Austen” Discord server where we can connect.

Even if that sort of thing is not for you, please do your part to foster community by reblogging and commenting on people’s work!

Did I miss any questions that you still have? If so, please reply to this post, send me an ask, or send me a DM.

Rules for Janeuary 2026

Janeuary, the month-long prompt event for fanworks inspired by Jane Austen, is a very flexible, open event, but there are a few rules we ask you to follow, to keep it fun for everyone.

Your work must include at least one of the following:

  • Character from one of Jane Austen’s works
  • Character from any Jane Austen adaptation (including modern ones)
  • Jane Austen herself
  • Setting in a Jane Austen-like AU

For example, any of these would be fine:

  • Darcy and you the reader live in the Star Wars universe [character from Jane’s works]
  • Cher from Clueless marries Snow White [character from Jane adaptation]
  • Jane Austen is, inexplicably, on the TV show Friends [Jane herself]
  • Han Solo and Princess Leia live in Regency England [setting in Jane AU]
  • Darcy and Cher fight monsters in a fantasy land with Regency-like manners, dress, and speech [all three: Jane character, Jane adaptation character, Jane setting!]

Completely canon-compliant works are of course also allowed!

The work must be newly made for this event. However, this also includes posting a new chapter to an existing fic, coloring and then re-posting a sketch you previously posted, etc.

Any ship is allowed, including “problematic” ones like underage, incest, etc. Please tag appropriately.

Any rating, content, and kink is allowed, just tag appropriately. If posting mature content directly on Tumblr rather than AO3, also use its community labels function and/or hide the content under a “keep reading” link.

Be respectful. No bashing of others ships or characters, and no unasked-for critique on anyone’s work. Accounts that do this will get blocked.

No AI in art, fic, or any other works. This account will not reblog or include in the AO3 collection anything that was made with AI involved to any degree.

While the idea is to post your work on the day of your prompt, we’re happy to accept late entries! We understand that life happens, so just tag us when you’ve posted it and we’ll reblog it then.

Send an ask or DM if you have additional questions about the guidelines for participating, or check the FAQ.

Thanks for helping us make this a great event!

Get ready for Janeuary 2026!

Celebrate the works and world of Jane Austen! @firawren is hosting a Jane Austen fandom and Regency AU fanwork event throughout the entire month of January. Save the date and start drafting your creations!

Anyone can join, and all types of fandom works are welcome: fanfic, fanart, gifs, manips, memes, fanvids, podfic, mood boards, etc.

Each day has a new prompt to inspire your creation:

(Text version of prompts under the “keep reading” link below)

15 of these prompts are new for 2026, while 16 of the most popular prompts from 2025 have been retained for this year.

Please interpret the prompts in whatever way inspires you! For instance, for the “Court” prompt, it could mean courtship, a court of law, the king’s court, a basketball court, etc. It’s up to you!

You are NOT expected to do something every day! Just 1 work for 1 day of your choosing is enough, though you are welcome to do more if you like. And you are NOT expected to create your fanwork on that day, just post it on that day.

Your work must follow one of the daily prompts, be new for the event, not use AI, and include at least one of the following:

  • Character from one of Jane Austen’s works
  • Character from any Jane Austen adaptation (including modern retellings)
  • Jane Austen herself
  • Setting in a Jane Austen-like AU

For example, any of these would be fine:

  • Darcy and you the reader live in the Star Wars universe [character from Jane’s works]

Tumblr tagging problems

Hi all! Janeuary is off to a fantastic start, with 12 fanworks already posted for day 1!

But we've got a problem: Tumblr is being Tumblr and eating some posts. We need your help to work around this.

TL;DR:

  • Use @ to make a link to @janeuary-month in the body of post
  • Also use #janeuary hashtag in tags list of post
  • Give us 24 hrs, then contact us if we haven't yet reblogged

The most reliable way to make sure we see your post is to make a link to the username @janeuary-month in the body of your post itself. We get a notification of this in our activity feed, so it's a lot harder to miss.

However, I found one post today that I was linked in but didn't get a notification for. I have no idea why. So, to be safe, use the #janeuary hashtag in the tags list at the end of your post too. The problem is that there were many posts today that used that tag and yet didn't show up when you go to the page for the tag, so that's why we're asking you to do both tagging methods: username and hashtag.

Give us 24 hours to reblog your post—we're not awake in all timezones, and we have other responsibilities than just Tumblr, of course. But, if you haven't seen your post reblogged after about 24 hours, please do send us a DM to let us know. It's possible Tumblr is hiding it, and we don't want to miss anything!

Thanks for your help in making this a fantastic event!

Janeuary 2025 starts in 2 days!

Sure! As long as you have at least one Austen-work or Austen-adaptation character, OR place your work in an Austen AU, you can include whatever other characters you wish.

Crochet a bonnet for day 23 and post a pic of it, make a photo montage of yourself doing Emma cosplay, edit together a Bride and Prejudice music video, we love it all!

Also, state which day/prompt you’re following and use the hashtag #janeuary and/or #janeuary 2025. Full posting instructions are coming soon.

But, if you post elsewhere (Instagram, Twitter, DeviantArt, etc.), you can also post a link to your own work on your own Tumblr, and then we can reblog your Tumblr post.

The AO3 collection (link coming soon) will remain open indefinitely.

Also, remember that the work doesn’t have to be completed before the end of the event, just the portion of it that’s connected to the prompt. For instance, you can start a fic on day 31 for the manners prompt by just posting that one completed chapter, and then after the month is over keep adding more chapters to it.
