Data Observatory

Landlord confidence index

The Landlord Confidence Index (LCI) brings together a range of data points that collectively track the mood, motivations and market outlook of landlords operating in the Private Rented Sector (PRS). It offers a quarterly snapshot of how external pressures - such as regulation, taxation, tenant demand and economic conditions - are shaping landlord behaviour and sentiment.

This updated version of the LCI introduces new, interactive infographics and a more detailed breakdown of confidence trends by region, policy area, and landlord actions. It provides vital context for understanding how confidence levels influence decisions on portfolio management, investment, rent setting, and long-term commitment to the sector.

Reports and Insights

Quarterly Reports

Each quarter the NRLA invites members to share with us their views and opinions on a range of topics, issues and Government policies  which affect their ability to be a good landlord.

The results are published and build into a detailed picture of the views and opinions of landlords. These reports form the evidence base from which the NRLA makes the landlord case to both local and national Governments.

Special Reports

This section contains one-off research reports which the NRLA have commissioned.  A number are written in-house, others a result of externally commsissioning well known experts on the economy or the PRS. The most recent publications appear at the top of the first page and go back in time. The earlier reports have been written by/commissioned by either the former RLA or the former NLA prior to our merger.

Deep Insight

These blog posts are written to prompt discussion and debate about the role of the Private Rented Sector (PRS) in the UK.

The posts provide more detail on trends which emerge in our analysis of datasets in the Observatory. They also highlight specific topics and comments landlords make in our regular or occasional surveys.

Academics, policy makers and practitioners also make regular contributions to the blog.
