The enigmatic figure of Achates in Vergil’s Aeneid becomes far more intelligible when viewed through the lens of Roman slavery. This paper argues that Achates instantiates the archetype of the “faithful slave” or “faithful freedman” in Vergil’s text. The paper connects Achates’s salient attributes—fidelity, omnipresence, invisibility, surrogacy, and isolation—to hallmarks of the “faithful slave or freedman” trope and to habits of thought endemic to Roman enslaving practices. This study of Achates illustrates how the mentalities of enslavement still inflect Roman literature (...)

The Odyssey is a poem keenly attuned to the affective experiences of certain characters’ grief, ambiguous loss, endurance, and resilience. This article shows that the Odyssey represents Penelope’s affective “stuckedness” in the face of uncertain loss through its use of narrative and verbal repetition, interruptions, symbols, and similes. In addition, it demonstrates that the poem portrays Penelope’s strategy of waiting the suitors out in Books 18–21 as heroic and parallel to Odysseus’ heroic endurance and resilience. Anthropologist Ghassan Hage has argued (...)

Imperial authors frequently discuss an equestrian courtier of Augustus named Vedius Pollio, who enjoyed feeding his slaves to specially trained lampreys. This story persists over two centuries of Latin literature and often centers around Pollio’s interactions with Augustus, who prevented him from executing an enslaved child in this way and then razed Pollio’s house after his death. I argue that the Pollio story worked to explain or justify increasing supervision of elite households in the Augustan period, and in particular a (...)

This essay undertakes a non-teleological exploration of Lucius’ escapes, physical intensities, and transformations in Apuleius’ Metamorphoses informed by the theoretical collaboration of Gilles Deleuze and Felix Guattari. Combining a tactic of “following” with the “components of expression” of Kafka’s oeuvre, and drawing mainly upon the theoretical assemblage developed in Anti-Oedipus and A Thousand Plateaus, this reading first addresses Lucius’ emergent state of evasion and molecularity prior to his asinine metamorphosis. Attention then turns to Lucius’ becoming-animal, tracing his “line of flight” (...)

In Book 8 of the History of Animals, Aristotle concludes his discussion of birds’ seasonal metamorphoses by quoting ten lines about the hoopoe from a tragedy. I show how this fragment—the longest poetic quotation in Aristotle’s extant biological works—is intricately related to his account of how birds change in form, color, and voice. I then propose that, through these verses, Aristotle activates a long poetic tradition of using birds, especially Tereus the hoopoe and Procne the nightingale, to explore questions of (...)

It explores the ways Sallust’s Jugurtha is characterized by his silences, the ways that Sallust silences Jugurtha within the narrative, and the ways that silence dominates Sallust’s understanding of what history is. The article links this motif of silence with Sallust’s triumviral context and with republican thought—both ancient and modern—on the role of language. Yet the ritual’s meaning and goals do not align with the foundation of her cult, traditionally attributed to Numa, or with its aition. Both rest on dominant values: the notion that women are naturally talkative and the expectation that they should stay silent. 39. Islamic Intellectual History in the Mughal Era.S. Shiraz Ali, Daniyal Channa & Asad Q. Ahmed (eds.) - 2026 - Cambridge: Cambridge University Press.
Islamic Intellectual History in the Mughal Era brings together new scholarship on the rich and varied intellectual life of the Mughal world, challenging long-standing narratives of decline and dichotomies such as orthodoxy versus heterodoxy. Spanning disciplines including philosophy, logic, poetics, mysticism, law, and medicine, the chapters collectively illuminate the infrastructures, languages, and actors that shaped Muslim scholarly production in South Asia between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Drawing on Arabic, Persian, and vernacular sources, the essays situate the Mughal scholarly enterprise (...)

  40. PDF HUMANITY: An Ontological-agonistic Perspective on Anthropogenesis, the Human Being, and Human Society.Petru Stefaroi - 2026
The theoretical endeavor of the volume opens in Part I by establishing the basic conceptual framework, where the first study, Ontos – Concept with Ancient Origins, Historical Development, and Contemporary Presences. Suggestions for New Ipostases: Personal Ontos, Communal Ontos, and New Categorial Interpretations (archived on 2026-04-15), traces the genealogy of the ontos concept and suggests new categorial hypostases indispensable in contemporary analysis, such as Personal Ontos, Communal Ontos, and new structural interpretations marked by permanent tension. This opening is deepened in (...)

  41. The Slidell Mosque and the Battle for Religious Freedom in the Deep South.Iqbal Akhtar - 2026 - Journal of the American Oriental Society 15 (1).
This article examines the history and significance of the Slidell Masjid in Louisiana. Founded in 1967 by Imam Lawrence Abdul Haqq, a man of Chahta (Choctaw) and Creole heritage, the mosque emerged from the Nation of Islam during the height of the Civil Rights era in St. Tammany Parish, a region with a documented history of extreme racial violence. This article argues that the Slidell Masjid represents a critical, yet overlooked, chapter in U.S. religious history. Its multicultural Sunni Muslim community (...)

  42. Cato’s Colonial Paradox and the Struggle over Libya’s Geography in Pharsalia 9.Rhoda Zoe - 2026 - Classical Antiquity 45 (1):242-268.
This paper explores how imperial expansion operates as a vehicle for environmental change in Lucan’s account of Cato’s Libyan desert march in Pharsalia 9. Lucan’s attempts to preserve Cato’s ethical standing in light of his opposition to Caesarian imperialism lead the march to inhabit a colonial paradox: the march has all the markers of a colonial expedition, except for extractable resources or habitable territory. This conditions Lucan’s ostensible presentation of Libya, which, I argue, constructs what Johannes Fabian labels an allochronic (...)

  43. The Trial of Jesus and Roman Provincial Criminal Procedure: Jurisdiction, Cognitio Extra Ordinem, and the Capital Competence of the Sanhedrin.J. Fernández-Pedrera - manuscript
The trial of Jesus is ordinarily discussed under two headings: whether the night session before the Sanhedrin was lawful, and whether the council could lawfully execute. This article argues that both questions are posed in categories that do not fit the procedure in force, so that the resulting literature — including the apologetic literature enumerating the trial’s “illegalities” — rests on an anachronism. Judea between AD 6 and 41 was governed by a prefect exercising personal imperium, and criminal jurisdiction over (...)

  44. The Post-Language System of Historical Critique Three Reductive Forces Dominating Contemporary History and the Fate of Truth for Future Generations.Karim Gheytanifard - manuscript
Abstract -/- Contemporary history, despite an unprecedented explosion of documents, images, and narratives, has paradoxically been emptied of the capacity to record truth. Drawing on the theory of "Post-Language" (Qeytani-Fard, 2021), this article argues that three reductive systems have surrounded contemporary history from three directions: Cartesian ontological reduction (history as quantitative data), Derridean epistemological reduction (history as a referenceless text), and Baudrillardian phenomenological reduction (history as simulation). These three reductions respectively eliminate the qualitative dimension of historical experience, the extra-linguistic referentiality (...)

  45. (1 other version)Three epistemological desiderata for HPS practitioners.Dubian Cañas - 2026 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science 119 (C):102201.
I outline an epistemology of evidential reasoning in the history and philosophy of science (HPS). Drawing upon some concrete works in HPS scholarship, I formulate three novel epistemological desiderata for using historical case studies as evidence for philosophical claims about science, to wit: independent historical evidence, metahistorical criticism, and disciplinary alignment. These desiderata bring out epistemic qualities of evidential reasoning that contribute to achieving its primary goal of conferring justification upon philosophical conclusions on the basis of historical evidence. In this (...)

This paper re-evaluates the traditional theories of the "resource curse" and modernization, arguing that the true peril of natural resources lies not in their physical attributes, but in a "lazy governance logic" born of resource abundance. Simultaneously, the paper critiques the limitations of the binary narratives surrounding Chile's modernization process—whether the Chicago School mythologizing it as a "free-market paradise" or structuralism and dependency theory dismissing it as a tragic victim of resources—both of which fail to adequately explain its complex social (...)
