I contacted outdoorsy about a host on…
I contacted outdoorsy about a host on their platform that is a scammer, and is incredible unsafe. I was pressured multiple times to send my personal information, including my address, off app to a male host. I was also prompted to leave the outdoorsy website and book through the hosts personal website. I was then lied to by said male host about the safety of the vehicle. I reached out to the host the same day of my pick to let them know this vehicle wasn’t safe and they just said “ok”. No resolution offered. Outdoorsy not only continues to allow this person to host, they also allow them to continually contact me through their website, regardless of my repeated requests for them to block communication from me. If you want to book with a company that cares about the safety of their customer, THIS IS NOT THE ONE.

⚠️ CONSUMER WARNING
⚠️ CONSUMER WARNING – MY EXPERIENCE WITH OUTDOORSY ⚠️
I rarely make posts like this, but after everything I went through, I feel compelled to share my experience in hopes that it helps someone else.
I paid approximately $660 to rent a trailer through Outdoorsy for what was supposed to be a family getaway. Unfortunately, from the moment we arrived home with the trailer, things started going wrong.
I immediately documented an electrical issue with the owner through text messages. The battery itself was dated 2007, so when the battery completely failed we ended up.with no electrical at all. Meaning no A/C on the hottest weekend of the year and no lighting for my children at night.
We also discovered a pre-existing leak in the plumbing, which meant we had to shut the water system off completely. As a result, we couldn't use the sinks, the shower, or even flush the toilel for nearly the entire trip.
The only reason we extended the awning was to create some shade inside because of the heat. As soon as we did, the entire awning arm fell off the trailer. It was visibly apparent that it had been repaired previously.
Throughout the rental, I documented the condition of the trailer with photos, videos, and written communication. Despite all of that evidence, I was still required to pay the full rental fee for what I believe was a trailer that was largely unusable.
To make matters worse, I was then faced with a claim that I was responsible for what I believe was a pre-existing mechanical defect. Rather then have a professional assess the damages, outdoorsy forced me into binding arbitration with Fairclaims.
Another major concern I have is the insurance coverage for both renters and owners. People are paying a percentage out of pocket to rent their trailers through the platform under the impression that they are protected. Based on my experience, that sense of protection may not be as clear or reliable as it seems—especially when disputes arise and you are directed toward arbitration rather than a straightforward resolution.
The dispute process was one of the most frustrating experiences I've ever had as a consumer. I was bounced between Outdoorsy, FairClaims, and multiple email chains while trying to resolve the matter. Not to mention time and undue stress. Rather than feeling like anyone was interested in reviewing the evidence, I felt like I was being pushed through a process designed to wear me down.
I was repeatedly given the impression that binding arbitration was my only option and that I had no ability to pursue the matter elsewhere.
After spending countless hours researching Alberta consumer law, I came to the conclusion that FairClaims did not have jurisdiction over my dispute. I communicated that position to FairClaims and outdoorsy a number of times. After months of back and fourth and 20-30 emails it was realized that they did NOT have the jurisdiction to force arbitration.
That experience left me with one overwhelming thought:
How many other families have had their vacations interrupted or ruined, paid hundreds or thousands of dollars for rentals they believe were not fit for use, and then walked away believing they had no option but to accept the outcome or proceed through arbitration?
I don't know the answer. But after reading other public complaints, I have a hard time believing my experience is unique.

The RV owner cancelled less than 10…
The RV owner cancelled less than 10 days before the trip with a lame excuse. If I, the renter did that it would have meant I would have lost 100% of my money. The owner of the RV had no repercussions. And I had to scramble to find a new RV to rent and wound up having to spend $2000 more.
When I told Outdoorsy about the cancellation, they were useless. They didn't help finding an RV, they simply asked how I would like my refund. I asked if the owner would be taken down from the site and the answer was something along the lines of, we'll pass this on to someone (i.e nothing will be done)
I would never use this website again and they have horrible policies for those that are renting.

How horror movies begin
Our experience was a nightmare to say the least, after a very long drive we arrive to 5 hours of problems with the RV hookups not functioning. Our host did work on resolving the issues but a big disappointing and frustrating ordeal the host cancels the trip (non functional RV) leaving us stranded with no where to go until a stranger stepped up and put us up in their home.
I did inquire about this very scenario at the time of reservation in case, we should be prepared to boondock (no hookups) but the host assured me after scouting the area that everything would be fine. It wasn't and there was no backup plan as the host responded with snarky remarks. Outdoorsy you gotta do better.
Strangers(awesome people) put us up in a luxurious guest room so it turned into a blessing in disguise.
Outdoorsy did give me a full refund and a sorry for your experience spiel. Outdoorsy is not a company I will put my trust in ever again.
Also you can't leave a review once the host cancels your reservation as I'm told by Outdoorsy so I will leave it here, the RV was named "HarVee" 2022 Keystone Outback Ultra Lite Toy Hauler from Durango CO
Outdoorsy did request a review on how they did right after.
Thanks for your Reply Outdoorsy I already received the same one

A host cancelled on us a week before…
A host cancelled on us a week before our scheduled trip, he never reached out to me I had to reach out to him to check in on the status of everything, he informed me the camper had been in the shop for 2 weeks with an electrical issue. Why wasn’t I informed 2 weeks ago, maybe then I would have had time to make other arrangements for a holiday weekend. Instead he cancelled the trip on his end, I was not able to write a review to warn others about what had happened, the host doesn’t get any kind of reprimand and I lose a bunch of money from having to cancel a camping trip last minute. Beware of using outdoorsy for rentals there is no protection for guests.

Absolute Nightmare! Unreliable Host, Corrupted System, and Disastrous Customer Support.
I had the absolute worst experience with this platform and host. My trip was booked and officially status-confirmed three months in advance (back on March 4). Yet, at the very last minute, the host attempted to force a downgraded substitution (a Jayco A-frame) that completely failed to meet my needs or fit the specific campground arrangements I had already locked in.
Despite the app still showing "BOOKING CONFIRMED," the host and the platform completely shirked their contractual responsibilities. To accommodate the original RV size, I had already spent extra money out of pocket to upgrade my campsite (Site #234 at Awenda Provincial Park). Because of their sudden breach of contract, all that preparation and money went down the drain.
What made it even more infuriating was Outdoorsy's customer support. Every single agent I spoke to did nothing but pass the buck, talk in circles, and offer zero actual solutions. Instead of step-in to source a comparable replacement from another host as a responsible platform should, they unilaterally converted my hard-earned money into "Travel Credit" to trap my funds. I had to waste even more hours on the phone demanding they reverse it back to my credit card.
Because of this total failure, I had to frantically source another RV on a different website at the absolute last minute, costing me an ADDITIONAL $400 out of pocket due to surge pricing.
This platform is highly unreliable, and their customer service is a joke. If you don't want your long-planned vacation ruined and your wallet drained by their incompetence, STAY AWAY!

Never book via Outdoorsy
This was an outright failure by both the host and Outdoorsy. The host never provided a legitimate pickup timeframe and then cancelled at the last minute, leaving us stranded. Outdoorsy’s response was even more disappointing—they offered zero accountability, zero support, and zero resolution. They want the commission, but not the responsibility. A platform that refuses to stand behind its customers is not a platform worth trusting.

This has been the worst company I have dealt with
This has been the worst company I have dealt with. Don’t believe what the rep tells you. They have an option to cancel I have done it twice, I’m told it’s on my end. The representative stayed on the phone walked through the process I already did, they claim I didn’t do it right. They took money away saying it was my fault because the cancel didn’t go through now we are on second cancel and they are telling me it didn’t go through again after rep stayed on phone while I did it again. Awful company to rent from.

DO NOT RENT unless you are 100% sure…
DO NOT RENT unless you are 100% sure you will be using the RV. I requested to rent a camper in July and had to cancel just a few days after I made the reservation. The non-refundable portion of my 3-day rental came to over $140. Had I waited a couple of days longer, it would have been more. Further, a $145/night camper with fees and taxes came to over $354/night. I will NEVER use this service again. On the bright side...I used their customer service via phone twice, and both times I received excellent service.

This response from outdoorsy is full of…
This response from outdoorsy is full of baloney and made up stuff:
“Regarding service fees on items such as fuel, cleaning, or dumping charges, these fees help support the infrastructure, payment processing, customer support, trust and safety measures, and dispute resolution services that facilitate transactions on the platform. Additionally, these charges help maintain consistency across bookings and fee structures.
While we are not suggesting that this applies to your business practices, service fees on these charges help discourage situations where costs are shifted away from the nightly rental rate and into add-on fees. Maintaining a consistent fee structure helps promote transparency and fairness for both guests and hosts across the platform.”
Outdoorsy takes 25% of the nightly rate already and charges renters outdoorsy fee and then Outdoorsy has the audacity to take a cut from dumping, fuel fees too and etc… then has the audacity to charge sales tax and all sorts of other fees to the renters and take more money from RV owners so where is the transparency on that when both renters and owners are surprised of how much Outdoorsy add on top of what the owner charges at the end of the trip? Outdoorsy does not do like dumping tanks, clean the RV and fueling up the RV. If outdoorsy wants to make more money and be really transparent on what they charge then charge upfront the renter so no surprises and don’t make a kickback of money from RV owners when we supply other services to renters to make them happy and satisfied. That payment should go to the rv owner when we do above and beyond. You guys just know how to make money out of renters and RV owners. I feel bad for renters that on top of what I fairly charge them that Outdoorsy will bump it up and take cuts from my own fair charge. The fact also that when a damage occurs during rentals and the owner missed the 48 hours window to file a claim that they will dismiss it already. They don’t investigate properly. One staff will request for a letter when I already sent a few days ago. They don’t take in consideration the phone calls I made with outdoorsy for my claim and messages exchanges between me and renter about the claim WITHIN 48 hrs but when they think that a message was asking for payment outside the app they will send you a reminder but when it comes to damage conversation they will just dismiss it like it didn’t happen. Their only concern was to make sure to make more money out of what they have charged the renter initially. The damage has happened during rental and there was an excess policy bought by the renter anyways to repair any damages so why not use the insurance that was bought by renter to fix the RV? Outdoorsy will run out of RV to rent at some point if they don’t want to take care of the RVs that bring them business.

A knife in the back
My experience with Outdoorsy was extremely disappointing.
The very first day of the trip, several advertised amenities in the van were not functioning properly, resulting in unexpected out-of-pocket expenses. I contacted outdoorsy about the issue who suggested i apply for a 50% refund which i found unjust, so i requested a refund only for the unexpected extra expenses. Outdoorsy contacted the host who initially agreed to reimburse me for a smaller portion of these unforeseen costs (~35%), which i ultimately agreed to it so we could all move on from the situation. I expressed to an outdoorsy agent on a private chat that my review of my outdoorsy rental would reflect my entire experience so i would wait until the resolution of the issue before writing it...
Weeeelp Unfortunately, this Outdoorsy agent apparently threatened the host with a negative review on my behalf and the situation deteriorated. Rather than helping facilitate the resolution that had already been offered, outdoorsy's involvement appeared to cause the host to reverse their position entirely. What started as a reasonable agreement between the host and me ended with no resolution at all.
The most frustrating aspect is that Outdoorsy did not advocate for me or work to preserve the solution that was already on the table. Their mediation process actually made the outcome worse. Instead of helping both parties reach a fair conclusion, they effectively eliminated the only compensation that had been offered.
I understand that disputes can be complicated, but I expected professionalism, competence, and customer advocacy from a platform that markets itself as a trusted intermediary and gets suuch a large cut!
Instead, I experienced poor communication, ineffective mediation, and a complete failure to protect the customer experience.
I cannot recommend Outdoorsy based on this experience. When problems arise, the true value of a platform is demonstrated by how it handles them. In my case, Outdoorsy’s involvement turned a manageable issue into a much worse one and i still have credit card expenses that i am struggling to pay but was very little money to the host and outdoorsy, especially after i spend over 1,500 with them! Sick to my stomach! Beware!

Las Vegas Campervans BEWARE
I recently rented a campervan from Las Vegas Campervans. It’s a family business renting Dodge Promaster City vans. They bit through Outdoorsy.
The van had 128,000 on it and you pick it up at a storage yard. The ventilation fan did not work, 3 or 4 tires were low in air (dash light came on) and kept getting Service Airbag System warning light meaning bags were not working.
We kept contacting Las Vegas Campervans and were little help. I had to call cc to dispute part of charge. BEWARE if you want SAFE vehicle

Beware of the hidden money grabs
Beware of the hidden money grabs. Outdoorsy advertises affordable rates, but their checkout process is loaded with undisclosed service fees, ambiguous platform charges, and forced insurance add-ons. They do everything they can to inflate the final price. Very disappointed by the lack of pricing transparency. I had originally booked and was paying $217/day (I calculated this myself by taking the full price I paid and divided over the days). When I added one more day to the trip a week later, they charged me $263 for the extra day. When I contacted the customer service team they couldn’t explain the reason for the increased fees. They said the same generic “taxes, service fees, and insurance” but couldn’t break down or show me how the service fees had increased $46 for adding a single day, even when accounting for the insurance and sales tax. And you can’t pay the host directly because they force you to go through their platform so they can collect the service fees. I reached out to the host directly and he didn’t mention raising his daily rate but said I had to go through the website. I understand the business model but if you want repeat customers you need to earn trust… and Outdoorsy has failed to do that.

Well, here's what happened to me
Well, somebody should have told me how to actually complete the rental. I chose an RV, input my dates, received a cost summary but couldn't find a way to actually make the deal. Tried dealing with the WORST AI experience I've ever had (and AI is ra rarely a good experience but dont get me started). After an eternity of trying to make the deal, I was offered a phone number. I called it and met a nice guy who helped me navigate the peculiar procedure used by this company. I had to "register" but was never told this on the website; I was directed to messaging the owner who never messaged me back. I put my phone number in the message bc I wanted to arrange to SEE the vehicle in person before I committed 4000 dollars. Two things: at this point I was creating a process based on many experiences of buying and renting stuff on the internet and doing it without any direction from Outdoorsy. Well, somehow I failed. Then, I got an email: "you haven't completed rental...." Against my better judgment, I took the bait. I was offered AI disguised with a human name. Finally, I know what AI is going to do; it's going to make murderers of us all. Now, after hours of effort, I still have my money but no RV. Anyone out there willing to rent an RV to a retired attorney with the highest credit rating available, money to burn, and passionately wanting to experience RVing for a couple of weeks? I'm your guy.

I have been cancelled by the host not the day before, not the week before, 7 hs after the pick up time (i was gonna pick up 5 pm instead 9 am) for a problem with the motorhome that they knew 2 weeks in advance. I lost my rv camping fees. My wife flew from toronto for this trip for her birthday. Such a joke. Stay away from this site.
The Funny thing is the host messaged me the day before to confirm. Haha. Great service outdoorsy!! Keep it up, 👍

Outdoorsy loves their RV owners!
As a RV owner using Outdoorsy for about 2 years now, I can only say great things about Outdoorsy! The customer service is great and the website is easy to manage. I have had no issues with Outdoorsy and will continue to use them for my vehicles.
