World Cities Day brings Urban October to an end on 31 October each year and was first celebrated in 2014. As with World Habitat Day, a global observance is held in a different city each year and the day focuses on a specific theme. It aims to raise international awareness of urbanization trends, challenges, and visions for sustainable urban development, promote international cooperation, and contribute to global efforts to build equitable, prosperous, sustainable, and inclusive cities that provide their communities with better living environments and quality of life.
2026 Theme—Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All
On 31 October 2026, the Global Observance of World Cities Day takes place in Fuzhou, China, under the theme “Regenerating the City: Adequate Housing for All.” The 2026 observance focuses on urban regeneration as a catalyst for achieving adequate housing for all and on how area-based regeneration, combined with housing and informal-settlement strategies, can create more inclusive and climate-resilient neighbourhoods.
Cities around the world are confronting interconnected pressures, including housing affordability challenges, ageing neighbourhoods and infrastructure, underutilized urban land, climate-related risks and widening social inequalities. According to the World Cities Day 2026 Concept Note, up to 3.4 billion people lack access to adequate housing, secure tenure, basic services or affordable living conditions. Urban regeneration offers an opportunity to address these challenges by improving existing urban areas while expanding access to adequate housing and ensuring that no one is left behind.
The 2026 theme emphasizes integrated approaches that connect affordable housing with improvements to public space, infrastructure, connectivity and climate resilience. It also places particular importance on participatory and community-led regeneration, together with safeguards that can prevent displacement and ensure that existing residents benefit from improvements to their homes and neighbourhoods.
World Cities Day 2026 will provide a platform for national and local governments, United Nations entities, international organizations, academia, the private sector and communities to exchange experiences, showcase innovative practices and identify practical solutions. The official 2026 programme framework runs from 31 October to 2 November 2026 at the Fuzhou Strait International Conference and Exhibition Center and includes an opening ceremony, thematic forums, side events, exhibitions and city tours.
The Global Observance is jointly organized by the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of the People's Republic of China, the Fujian Provincial People's Government and UN-Habitat, and is hosted by the Fuzhou Municipal People's Government.

UN-Habitat's World Cities Report 2026 examines the global housing crisis and pathways towards adequate, secure and affordable housing.
The report estimates that up to 3.4 billion people lack access to secure, safe and adequate housing, including more than one billion people living in informal settlements and slums. It examines interconnected challenges related to affordability, displacement, informality, climate resilience and liveability.
The report highlights adequate housing as a foundation for sustainable urban development and human well-being. It emphasizes affordable and well-located housing, improved land governance, climate-resilient urban development and inclusive, community-led approaches.
Background
The United Nations General Assembly designated 31 October as World Cities Day through resolution 68/239. The Day is intended to promote the international community's interest in global urbanization, strengthen cooperation among countries in addressing the opportunities and challenges of urbanization, and contribute to sustainable urban development around the world.
Urbanization provides the potential for new forms of social inclusion, including greater equality, access to services and new opportunities, as well as engagement and mobilization that reflect the diversity of cities, countries and the globe. Yet inequality and exclusion remain major challenges to sustainable urban development that delivers for all.
Urban October was launched by UN-Habitat to emphasize the world's urban challenges and engage the international community in advancing the New Urban Agenda. The month begins with World Habitat Day and concludes with World Cities Day on 31 October.
Sustainable Development Goal 11 sets the ambition of making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. Its objectives are closely connected with UN-Habitat's mandate and with efforts to expand access to adequate housing, improve urban planning, strengthen resilience and reduce inequalities in cities and human settlements.
In October 2016, the United Nations Conference on Housing and Sustainable Urban Development (Habitat III), held in Quito, adopted the New Urban Agenda. The Agenda provides a global framework for how cities and human settlements are planned, designed, financed, developed, governed and managed, and supports implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
