17 Pictures of Common Bug Bites and Symptoms to Look For
Some bites from common critters may be serious—here’s how to tell what bit you.

When a mysterious dot forms on your skin in spring and summer, it’s understandable to assume you may have a bug bite. But if you didn’t see the actual insect latch onto you, it can be tough to know what kind of bite you’re dealing with, along with next steps—including how concerned you should be.
While nothing replaces a doctor’s care, looking at insect bite pictures of common bug bites can at least help you narrow the field and figure out what should come next. Is this potentially serious or more likely to be a run-of-the-mill insect bite?

If you have a slight sting or itch and you suspect you were bitten by something like a mosquito, you’re likely good to continue on with your day as usual. But if you have more severe symptoms, including trouble breathing or swallowing, you may be having an allergic reaction and should see a healthcare provider immediately, according to Ife J. Rodney, M.D., founding director of Eternal Dermatology + Aesthetics.
Bug bites can be tricky to diagnose, given that everyone’s immune system can cause a different reaction. However, some will leave a telltale mark or lead to a particular reaction that suggests a certain bug latched onto you.
To help you figure out what happened, we’ve laid out some photos of bug bites and stings from common insects you could run into. To help you narrow your self-diagnosis, we also consulted with healthcare providers and bug experts to learn more about symptoms you may experience, too.
Of course, if you’re unsure of what you’re dealing with or are having a strong reaction, it’s important to rope in a healthcare provider. Here’s what you need to know.
