Looking East towards High Bridge
This photo shows the River Witham with High Bridge in the distance. It is the oldest bridge in the United Kingdom, being built about 1160 and which still has buildings on it. The high cost of demolition prevented the bridge being pulled down in 1803. Generations of boaters have referred to the bridge as the Glory Hole since the narrow and crooked arch in the distance prevented large boats using the river from Brayford Pool to Boston and the North Sea. The redbrick building to the left of the river is Stonebow House which comprises of five apartments whilst to the right fixed on the wall are old gas lamps which may not be working nowadays.
