Daphne Caruana Galizia murder: Parliament to discuss delayed justice in Malta

Nine years after the journalist’s assassination, MEPs and the Commission will discuss developments in the court case and the rule of law in Malta, on Wednesday.

Daphne Caruana Galizia was a Maltese journalist, blogger and anti-corruption activist who exposed corruption, money laundering, organised crime, the sale of citizenship, and the Maltese government’s connections to the Panama Papers. She was killed in a car bomb attack on 16 October 2017. The outcry over the authorities’ mishandling of the investigation ultimately prompted the resignation of then prime minister Joseph Muscat.

Five people have been imprisoned for their roles in the murder of Daphne Caruana Galizia, but the mastermind behind the assassination has yet to be convicted. Critical of failings in the investigation, already in December 2019 MEPs called on the European Commission to take action. They have revisited the issue at every turn since – including in a 2023 resolution condemning the limited progress in bringing those responsible to justice.
