Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli on finishing fifth: "I think today is one of those days where you have to be happy with P5. The pace was not really strong on the medium [tyres]. I was getting there towards the end but then on the soft had big, big damage on the floor.

"It was not an easy race at all but overall was one of those weekends where I was always a step behind. Especially after missing FP1, FP2 - half of FP2 - so not easy out there but all in all I’m happy with P5 and just make sure next weekend I’ll be back at my level.

"George has done an incredible weekend. He’s driven incredibly this weekend and he had a lot of confidence. This weekend was my worst of the year by far in terms of performance. I wasn’t there. I wasn’t really present especially with what happened so early on and just didn’t take the same risks especially after qualifying. Today was more 'damage-safe mode' instead of full attack."

Lewis Hamilton, who finished sixth: "It was a pretty bad race from my perspective. I didn't really go anywhere, I couldn't keep up with the guys ahead.

"All weekend I couldn't get the tyres to work but in the race at the end of the first stint the tyres suddenly started to switch on."

Good unity at the team? "Yes."

What can you do these next few races? "Keep trying."

More from Max Verstappen: "I think we had a very strong race. For most of the race, we were on the wrong tyre because the medium, unfortunately, didn’t work like I think a lot of people expected. Because I think once we swapped to the soft tyre, you could see George and I were pulling away a lot from everyone behind.

"I had fun. It was just pushing flat out, one second behind, 1.1s and that was basically the gap the whole stint. So it was good. I enjoyed myself. It got close, of course, to the line because I think George had no turbo out of 15 because of the yellow flag so that's why it was that close. But realistically it would have been one second, like the whole stint was.

On whether he is still hopeful for a victory before the end of the season: "We’ll keep trying and we’ll see if it happens or not."

Red Bull's Isack Hadjar speaking to Sky Sports: "Car is great. This weekend we had the second fastest car. It's very impressive how Mercedes managed to deploy their energy in sector two and they're just very quick in the straights. I'm really enjoying the weekend. I took it step by step, very slowly, told myself I wasn't allowed to touch any walls and it paid off. For the comeback I had to take it easy and still got the best result possible."

On how he felt about the team not swapping him and Verstappen around before the first safety car: "What's very impressive about Max is that even though he's on the medium he gets in the rhythm super quickly straight away. I think I was more on the limit of what the car could do a bit later and I was too late, Max was already ahead. In the first place I should have never been overtaken, because I had the better tyres and once they switched on, I was sitting behind but I knew I had the better grip. I was honestly fine with it. Third was my target. I'm satisfied."

Alpine's Franco Colopinto, speaking to Sky Sports about if he would speak to Pierre Gasly and apologise for taking him out of the race: "Yes of course. Just to all of the team, not only Pierre. It was a big mistake so really, really sorry to everyone in the factory who have been working really hard. Very sad and disappointed. Big, big sorry, big mistake. Big sorry to both of them [Gasly and Norris]."

Pierre Gasly said: "It is not easy, we had a very good weekend and the car was one of the best race cars we have had this season.

"We had 14 or 15 second gap to the midfield. A lot of positives to take away but I am still struggling to process the outcome. We had both cars in the points. Not an ideal day but I am sure we will move on it.

"Unfortunately we lost out today but hopefully we can make it up in the rest of the year.

"It is all about respect, as long as there is respect everything is possible."

McLaren's Lando Norris, who retired after being crashed into by the Alpines, speaking to Sky Sports: "I was just slow, slow going a lot in the straights. An impossible race out there with straight-line speed, hopefully that gets fixed.

"At the end of the day I got taken out, just some drivers who shouldn't be in F1 to be honest.

"Maybe Malaysia will be better for us."

Here's how things look at the top of the drivers' championship as Kimi Antonelli's lead is narrowed from 81 points to 66.

More from race winner George Russell, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a great weekend. Got a bit tense towards the end, Max was really pushing hard and our pace was incredible - we were pulling almost a second ahead of everyone else.

"When that yellow flag came out, I backed off and when I went on my power I had no turbo and then I had no power and that's when he almost passed me.

"A great weekend all in all. I felt on course to keep pulling away and I felt in a really good groove this weekend. Hope it continues."

Red Bull's Isack Hadjar speaking after finishing P3 at the Azerbaijan GP on his return from a wrist injury: "I'm happy. It's been a very long six weeks, been six weeks since I injured myself and I felt it was the right time to come back. This weekend I really took it step by step. It's a track where you can end up in the wall really quickly. It was a very slow buildup but it brought me here. I'm very very happy to be on my first proper podium for pure pace. I'm delighted."

Red Bull's Max Verstappen on being back on the podium: "Yeah we had a good race. The first turn was probably a little bit difficult with the medium tyre but we still worked our way into P3 and then we had a good restart into P2 and then it was just like 1 second or 1.1 second.

"On the final lap with the yellow flag, I think George lost a bit of boost out of one corner, so that is why I caught up quite a bit and then to the line, I got close but it was not enough.

"I just tried to open the corner, probably a little bit too much but the tyres were fine."

More from race winner George Russell on what his plan is for the rest of the season: "Win every race. That's the game plan.

"My team-mate's had an incredible season, he's been pretty flawless throughout but now we're getting to crunch time. I'm just going to focus on myself. If I continue giving performances like I did this weekend, at the end of the season I'll be happy because it's been a tough period for me and I'll feel like I've come through the other side."

Mercedes' George Russell speaking after winning the Azerbaijan GP: "It's amazing to be back on the top step of the podium. I do want to say a big thanks to my team because they've continued to believe in me through a tough moment, helped me come through it.

"I'm really proud to have had this weekend. The first half of the race felt pretty plain sailing, building the gap. Safety car restart, especially when I saw Max behind I thought it's not going to be easy and he drove incredibly at the end of the race. When the yellow flag came out, I lifted off the power and when went back, I had no turbo so then I had no power, Max almost got me at the line."

On what has changed for him since the summer break: "I think it's just having more experience with this new driving style I've adopted and every race since the break I feel like I've gone from strength to strength. I feel more like myself again."

Always interesting watching the top three watch the race highlights in the cooldown room.

Lots of "oohs" when they see that crash with the Alpines and Lando Norris' McLaren, while George Russell says he kept bouncing over a small drain at a section near the castle wall.

Acting team principal Bradley Lord speaking to 5 Live after the double yellow flags in the last seconds of the race: "A little bit of a heart in the mouth moment because I think George lost the boost from the turbo because he had to go so slowly through the double yellows then suddenly Max was half a second behind but he just had the legs out of Turn 15 and down the straight. George didn't put a foot wrong all day so it would have been a grave injustice if he didn't come out on top but I'm very glad he did."

Franco Colapinto is given a 10-second time penalty for causing that crash. He didn't finish the race so that may become a grid penalty for the next race.
