Gareth Ainsworth says he will not get carried away with Gillingham's improving form.

The Gills sit fourth in League Two, three points behind leaders Barnet, after three consecutive wins and are unbeaten in six since their opening day defeat by Walsall.

They swept away Bristol Rovers at Priestfield on Saturday, with the Gas considered among the promotion favourites.

"The way we're playing, the way we're defending, I think we've got something special at the moment," Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent.

"[But] I've got to be very wary of feeling too good. We're on this path but I know there's some pitfalls, there's some hidden traps and holes you can fall down, so I've got to keep everyone grounded.

"This new way we're playing, we're loving it, we really are. I want to make sure that we all know what we're achieving, but steadily.

"Don't ever think we're better than we are, because this game will bite you on the backside, very quickly."

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth has praised the form of defender Logan Dobbs, describing him as a "surprise package".

Dobbs, 19, has started all but one league match so far this season and scored his first senior goal for the Gills on Saturday when he headed home the first in a 2-0 win against Tranmere.

Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent: "Logan Dobbs has been a surprise package for me this year.

"With the loss of Liam [Gordon, to injury] in the first game and Sam Gale's move to Barnsley, all of a sudden the door opened and Logan's been sensational.

"And I think he will understand when I say I didn't know he was capable of - he's done really well to become one of the consistent members of the squad here."

He added: "Songs were sung from the stands saying [Dobbs] is one of our own, so when he got his first goal in front of the fans then that's what dreams are made of."

Gillingham, 11th in League Two, host second-placed Bristol Rovers on Saturday.

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth says he wants his players to follow the example of tireless midfielder Robbie McKenzie.

The 27-year-old former Hull player remains a key cog in the centre of the park for the Gills, and is closing in on 250 appearances for the club.

"We've had chats, me and Robbie, and I'm loving seeing the way he's playing at the moment," Ainsworth told BBC Radio Kent.

"He's coming off because he's got nothing left. That's what I want all my players to do, empty the tanks.

"That's my sort of team. We've got to be fit in this league, but organised and also defensively solid."

After beating Tranmere on Saturday, Ainsworth's Gills are on a five-match unbeaten run in League Two, their best run since December 2025. They host Bristol Rovers next, on Saturday.

Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth says his side must improve their home form in his second full season in charge.

The Gills have taken one point from their opening two home League Two matches and also went out of the League Cup 3-0 at home to League One Luton Town.

Ainsworth's side won only eight of their 23 home league matches in 2025-2026 as they finished 17th in the table.

"I want to start winning at Gillingham, I do," he told BBC Radio Kent. "We should have won the Northampton game, and the Walsall match we should have been right in there - but it somehow got away from us."

Gillingham are currently 13th in the division after taking six points from their opening five matches. Their first win came at Rochdale last Saturday.

"Brilliant to perform at Rochdale like we did. I think we're the best away team in the league at the moment form-wise and that's something to be proud of.

"I just want to win at home. Let's start turning this into a tough place. I think that's been one of the hurdles I need to get over.

"Since I've come in, its not been the fortress I want it to be, but this is my team now. This is what my team looks like, I can feel it - I think many people can see it.

"This is what I want to turn Priestfield into, this winning territory for us, and hopefully that will start on Saturday."

Gillingham winger Kadeem Harris is set to be on the sidelines for a prolonged period after rupturing an anterior cruciate ligament.

Harris was carried off on a stretcher in the 70th minute of the 0-0 draw at Fleetwood Town on Saturday after suffering the injury.

The 33-year-old signed for the Gills in June and has started all three games for the club - two in League Two and one in the EFL Cup - this season.

"Kadeem was one of our star signings in the summer window so to now be without a player of his calibre, quality and professionalism is a huge loss to the group," boss Gareth Ainsworth told the club website., external

"He will be sorely missed during this time but we wish him a full and speedy recovery and I have no doubt he will come back an even stronger character than he already is."
