Gumroad Support: A Kafkaesque Nightmare of Blame-Shifting and Technical Incompetence
My Experience with Gumroad Support
I purchased a drawing course for my children through Gumroad. The course was a gift, and I was looking forward to spending quality time with my kids, following the video lessons.
Instead, I spent days fighting with Gumroad's support team, with no fsolution and being ignored at the end. .
The Problem
The video player on the course page would not load. The player would spin indefinitely, and the video never played.
I tried everything on my side:
Multiple browsers (Opera, Firefox)
Clearing cache and cookies
Disabling VPN and antivirus
Installing codecs
Updating drivers
Nothing worked.
The Support Experience
I contacted Gumroad support. What followed was a masterclass in gaslighting and blame-shifting:
AI-generated nonsense. The first responses were automated scripts suggesting I clear my cache, change my browser, or disable my VPN — all of which I had already done.
"You have Windows 7." When I proved I had Windows 10 (with screenshots), they ignored my evidence and continued to claim my operating system was the problem.
"Buy a new computer."
The final "solution" from a human support agent was to purchase a new laptop — because apparently, their platform requires cutting-edge hardware to play a simple video.
This is not technical support. This is weaponized incompetence.
What I Actually Found
After spending hours in the browser console (F12), I discovered the real problem — and it was on Gumroad's side.
Here is what I found:
The page loads correctly.
The API returns the correct metadata.
The HLS manifest (.m3u8) loads successfully.
But the video segments (.ts files) fail to load.
I captured the exact network request:
The player was requesting only 1 byte of each video segment instead of the full file. The segments never loaded, and the player spun forever.
The Conclusion
Gumroad's content delivery system is broken. The problem is on their server side, not on my computer, browser, or network.
But instead of investigating the issue, their support team:
Ignored the evidence I provided.
Repeated the same useless advice.
Eventually stopped responding entirely.
My Advice to You
Do not buy courses on Gumroad if you expect to actually watch them.
Here is what will happen:
If you encounter any playback issue, support will blame your computer, your browser, or your internet provider.
They will refuse to acknowledge that their platform has technical flaws.
They will waste your time with circular troubleshooting scripts.
They will eventually stop replying.
You will spend hours proving that the problem is on their side, and they will never admit it.
What I Should Have Done Differently
I should have asked the course author for direct access to the videos (e.g., through Google Drive, Vimeo, or YouTube) from the very beginning. Gumroad is simply not a reliable platform for video content delivery.
Rating
0/10 — Total failure.
Product: Unusable
Support: Dismissive and unhelpful
Resolution: None
I still cannot watch the course I was gifted.
Final Words
If you are a course creator, reconsider using Gumroad. Your students will struggle, and your reputation will suffer.
If you are a student, insist on direct video links before purchasing. Gumroad is not worth the headache.
Technical Summary for Engineers
For those who care about the actual bug:
HLS manifest loads correctly.
Video segments are requested with Range: bytes=N-N (1-byte ranges).
Segments never load fully.
Direct access to .ts files returns 404.
The issue is isolated to Gumroad's CDN (CloudFront) configuration.
I have all the screenshots and logs to prove this.

Now you have to have a mimum balance of 100$ to be paid ? I'm leaving this with the high fees and low personalizations features
Gumroad is not a good platform I… he chat is clear scam
Gumroad is not a good platform I purchased plugin from them. VERTEXTURE One day suddenly they blocked one of its parts I mailed them so many times, but they failed to give satisfactory reply. After a year or two years when I just enquired about update, they suddenly blocked that part also. Many mails to them but no satisfactory answer, either they called me cheater. I asked gul to solve the matter, but nothing happened. So never go to gul in future.
Took my money
Took my money. No receipt. No product. No help. Stay away. No, run away from this app
They took action and refunded me against a scam
I bought a product which wasn't as described via Gumroad and found the seller used a fake product listing to sell pirated content.
Gumroad acted very quickly and said they suspended the sellers account. They've also processed a refund for me so I didn't have to contact my card company.
I'm impressed with how they acted so 5*
Thanks again.
They quietly changed the minimum payout…
They quietly changed the minimum payout threshold without telling you, and now my money is stuck with them, and I can't withdraw it!!
It used to be just $10, but out of nowhere, they increased it to $100. I am a small seller who has only made $40 on the platform in the past year, and now I can't even withdraw that amount because of the new threshold! Even though I want to close my account and move my products away, I also can't do that because they won't pay the remaining balance! If I close the account with any remaining balance, they consider it as if I gave up on my money, and they will never pay me. At this point, they just want to hold your money hostage. Lowkey a scamming tactic! I regret signing up for this platform.
Unjustified account suspension despite reporting suspicious activity and providing full evidence-amy account e-mail: elhairchabdenbi26@gmail*com
My name is Abdenbi Elhairch. Yesterday, I proactively alerted Gumroad support about suspicious activity involving an Arabic-speaking user using a US-based account. I noticed this user was able to access the review section without purchasing the product, which contradicts the platform's rules where a purchase is required to leave a review. Furthermore, this individual posted abusive and insulting comments directed at my family in the review section.
I contacted support immediately to report this breach and requested the removal of that fraudulent review. To my shock, I woke up this morning to find my account suspended and my earnings frozen. The reason provided was the use of "stolen payment methods," which actually confirms my previous warning about the suspicious user.
I have already reached out to support to prove that I am a legitimate seller with real sales. I submitted my government ID, details of my digital products, and even messages from my actual customers who were confused by sudden refunds. I also shared all the positive feedback from my clients and a link to my Facebook page used for marketing.
Despite all this evidence, I have received no human response. I am only getting automated bot replies, and it seems my ban was triggered by an algorithm error. Unfortunately, I feel deceived by this platform after being a proactive and honest creator.
Scam product!
Purchased a product which was completely mis-sold and overhyped. $72 for a bunch of useless PDFs. Not happy, the seller isn't even responding to my messages.
Refund otherwise i'll be contacting my bank for a reversal and i'll be leaving gumroad 1-star review on all review sites with proof of my complaint.
This is ridiculous that I'm having to chase this up!
Paid for a product I didn't receive.
Paid for a product I didn't receive.
The money went out of my account but the product never showed up in my library.
Tried contacting support several times and after initially saying they didn't receive the money yet, they stopped replying.
I wanted confirmation that they never received my money so I could ask my bank to figure out where it went but they never replied after the first e-mail.
The creator was kind enough to gift me the product after the whole ordeal but Gumroad was very unhelpful.
I sold a products for €105…
I sold a product for €105 (approximately $115 USD).
After fees, I only receive $59. But even this I can not get due to they pay out only above a 100 dollar. So I lost all my sales. Sinds I will not go on with this company. This feels like teft
Breakdown:
* €105 ≈ $115 gross sale
* Payout received: $59
* Difference: $56
That equals roughly 48–49% of the total amount taken in fees and conversions.
I find this extremely frustrating and not transparent. From a seller perspective, you think you’ve made a solid sale, but nearly half of the revenue is gone before you even receive it. And then de rest is gone due to corruption.
This level of cost makes it very difficult to build a sustainable income on the platform, especially for smaller digital products.
They changed to a $100 minimum amount…
They changed to a $100 minimum amount for withdrawal.
Gumroad is cool in theory.
Gumroad is theoretically a great platform. Sure, it has a flat gumroad fee, but it's for-profit. That's commonplace. And I can excuse the 30% discovery fee since other stuff also has similar expenses for posting stuff available for discovery, like Steam. The layout, flexibility, and ease of use has made Gumroad an easy choice for me for about a year. But over time, they've fallen off HEAVY. They keep trying to push this one paid business course on you as one of the things on the "getting started" checklist, they just let basically anyone become an affiliate of your stuff without your consent (you don't know this even really exists until you get a sale that made less money than you expected, but once you know that you can go to settings and reject that), and THE HUNDRED DOLLAR PAYOUT THRESHOLD. A HUNDRED DOLLARS. Genuinely what reason is there for this to be the case? Just, no warning, suddenly I have to make TEN TIMES AS MUCH MONEY just to actually get it back out. I get it's to "reduce fraud" but pretty much all this does in practice is punish small creators and discourage new ones. What were they thinking. I never thought I would be looking for alternatives now, but here we are. Gumroad as a platform? Really cool! But this is trustpilot. I'm rating them based on how much I trust them. And I do not trust them anymore.
Unauthorized refunds and fund withholding — sellers beware
Gumroad withheld my seller funds and issued unauthorized refunds without my consent. I am a digital product seller with zero chargebacks and zero customer complaints. Despite this, Gumroad flagged my account with a "HIGH iffy Fraud score" and paused my payouts. This is the second time they have done this — the first time, their own support team investigated and confirmed there was no fraud. Yet they repeated the same action. Even worse, they refunded $733.50 to a customer without consulting me, and there was no chargeback or dispute from the customer. In total, they are withholding $1,157.75 of my earned money. Their support team provides vague responses and offers no clear timeline for resolution. I strongly advise any seller to think twice before using Gumroad. They can freeze your funds and issue refunds at will, with no accountability or transparency.
awful payout experience
awful, my payout has been delayed returned for fews months just because of simple wrong name information even tho I don't there anything wrong with the information I entered, contact them only get you these annoying Ai response, when actually human support they barely do anything and often igrone my reply, now they raise the minimum to 100$ without further notice,I just want my payout and leave this awful business.
Scam and dead service
I went on this platform to purchase a course that costs 15$ but upon checking out I was shocked to notice that another transaction worth over 100$ that I neither initiated nor confirmed passed simultaneously with my payment, resulting in duplicates of some products I had already purchased in the past.
I contacted their customer service only to realize I was communicating with a confused chat bot. Asked for human help, but dead silence. Gumroad is indeed a disaster. Avoid entirely if you can.
Don't trust their 5-star reviews.
Don't trust their 5-star reviews.
I bought a cheap $10 Uxpeak e-book "ChatGPT for UX/UI Design: Top Prompts and Expert Tips for Maximum Impact".
I left a negative review, as the book really just had 50 stupid examples of short prompts, the majority not even remotely related to UX/UI.
Some of the prompts were seriously like "What is the weather like in New York".
ALL the so called prompts in their ebook, is one-line questions - Yes, technically that's a prompt, but useless.
A few months after I received an email saying they were sorry and I got a full refund.
My 1 star review was however also deleted (not mentioned in their email), so now they're back to having 8x 5-star ratings which are very likely all fake.
