The arrondissement of Pontarlier is an arrondissement of France. It is part of the Doubs département in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté region. Its capital, and subprefecture of the department, is the city of Pontarlier.
History
[change | change source]When the arrondissements of Doubs were created in 1800, Pontarlier was one of them in the Doubs department.[2]
Geography
[change | change source]The arrondissement of Pontarlier is in the most southern of the arrondissements of the Doubs department; it is the largest with an area of 2,034.7 square kilometres (786 square miles).[3] It has a population of 109,841 inhabitants, the arrondissement of the department with fewest inhabitants, and a population density of 54.0 inhabitants/km².[4]
The arrondissement of Pontarlier is bordered to the north by the arrondissement Montbéliard, to the east and south by Switzerland, to the southeast by the Jura department and to the west by the arrondissement Besançon.
