Clarification
[edit]I went to Army OCS at Fort Benning, Georgia in 1969. At that time, the length of the Army OCS was approximately 6 MONTHS or 24 weeks which is approximately twice the length of the current Army OCS course. The personal and physical harassment that OCS candidates were subject to at that time have been widely criticized as being counter productive to producing officers who are intellectually, emotionally, and ethically prepared for combat commands. Both the shortening of the length of the OCS course and the apparent significant reform in the means utilized to train officers at OCS, inclusive of reducing the personal and physical harassment of officer candidates, is definitely to be commended given the above.Cicero9 (talk) 21:41, 5 July 2009 (UTC) OK, it's one of four ways to become an officer. What are the other three? These others should have an entry under a "See Also" heading in this article. --Unfocused 14:35, 12 May 2005 (UTC)
- USMA, ROTC, "Direct" Commission (like Teddy Roosevelt)Meyerj (talk) 17:43, 6 July 2009 (UTC)
OCS at that time included what is now the branch specific Officer Basic Course (OBC). All FT Benning OCS Graduates were comissioned as Infantry after the OBC phase with additional schooling for other branches (with out an OCS) such as Medical Service Corps. USMA and ROTC officers were comissioned upon graduation from schooling. Of note the Warrant Officer Course at FT Rucker carried this on until almost all of the Vietnam era officers had retired. Now students are awarded their Warrant after the "Basic Course" prior to specialty training. Previously students were not appointed until after they completed flight school. Part of this was the change over to "growing" non-aviation Warrant Officers rather then appointing them after careers as NCOs.65.125.90.135 (talk) 18:50, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
"Service personnel in reserve components (in reserve or national guard units) can also attend OCS at the rate of one weekend a month."
Is this information current? I'm aware of the weekend ARNG programs, but I thought USAR personnel could only choose full-length federal OCS at Benning or accelerated OCS at several locations. (Among the various other commissioning paths open to USAR personnel, of course.) --VAcharon 14:37, 12 October 2006 (UTC)

Major rebuild
[edit]I started it... I am familiar with the history of the OCS, that is at Benning, and by lineage is considered to have the most direct line from the school founded in 1941 by General Bradley. I have filled in a lot of info on some of the "other" OCS programs (branch specific, women's, forward in WWII). I also know a ton about Active Duty OCS, since that's where I received my bars....can anyone fill in better info on the Reserve and NG schools? — Andrew 02:33, 16 February 2007 (UTC)
Needs Serious Editing
[edit]This article needs some serious editing. The article is chock full of spelling errors (ex: "Ordinance", "Quater Master", "Lt. Col.", etc), the grammar is hard to follow in some paragraphs, and several paragraphs are essentially repeated in the very next paragraph. Why are civilians in the Hall of Fame titled "Honorable"? That title is reserved for those civilians who were government officials such as Cap Weinberger, not for civilians who were not such as Rick Rescorla. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.4.81.4 (talk) 16:08, 27 March 2011 (UTC)
About OCS during the Cold War
[edit]I'm moving the comment by Jack2629 to here from the page itself to fix the broken reference name problem.
- There seems to be a missing link here. In 1949 I attended OCS at Fort Riley, Kansas. It was a 24 week course and commissioned officers in all branches. Each graduate had three choices of branches and with few exceptions he was commissioned his first choice of branch. My class was AOC 20 which graduated in March of 1950. After graduation each graduate attended the Basic Officer's course for his branch. ref name="jack2629"
