Roosevelt’s presence in the primaries
editHow exactly do we know FDR ran against Wilson in the primaries? Steelydanfan03 (talk) 19:37, 7 June 2020 (UTC)
FDR was not a candidate in this race. He was not included in CQ's Guide to US Elections as a candidate; the CQ totals were borrowed directly from Louise Overacker's book The Presidential Primary (1926), page 237.
More importantly, historians who have examined the original returns in the various states have broken down the "Other" vote (reported by Overacker/CQ as 14,471) by pulling out the reported vote for other candidates. The unidentified scattering currently stands at 835, which is the maximum number of votes that FDR could have received in the Democratic presidential primaries of 1916. The current status of the nationwide totals for the 1916 Democratic presidential primaries is reported here: https://www.ourcampaigns.com/RaceDetail.html?RaceID=55165 . These totals, mostly based on the official/certified state totals from various state archives, have replaced some of Overacker's incomplete returns and added results from some states that Overacker did not have in hand when her book was published.
