Ten million tried to buy tickets for Adele’s American tour

It's fair to say the Londoner is in demand stateside

Ten million people tried to buy tickets to Adele‘s US tour, which sold out shortly after going on sale on Thursday (December 17).

A memo from Ticketmaster also revealed the figure, with more than four million buyers attempted to snap up the 120,000 tickets available for the New York shows at Madison Square Garden alone, according to Huffington Post. The total number of tickets available for the entire extended American tour was around 750,000.

President of Ticketmaster North America Jared Smith released a statement to staff expressing thanks for their work, despite system crashes, in which he acknowledges the difficulties presented by the sheer demand for the tour.

“Thanks to your efforts – even with what I’m told was easily an all-time record of 10 million + fans rushing to our site – we delivered a good experience for as many fans as possible,” Smith said.

Adele’s North American tour was only announced on Monday and follows a lengthy UK and European tour next year.

Adele recently discussed why she rarely performs live in an interview with The Times, saying: “Performing to that many people for every night, for that long, I find something very lonely about it. Which sounds weird, because you’re performing for like, 20,000 people every night, but you leave on your own. You don’t go home and, like, share a bed with 20,000 people and have a little pyjama party and watch movies.”

She continued: “Obviously I’m going to have my friends with me and I’m going to have my family with me, but the thought of how lonely that could be frightens me more than the load of doing a worldwide tour.”
