Our engineers are a fun and exceptional bunch of people, working on difficult challenges, but ones with great rewards too. More recently, we’ve started to accelerate our growth, and my team is going to double in size by the end of the year (that’s where you come in). Ideally you’ll love a mix of product and platform work, and enjoy seeing your work in our apps. While we are growing quickly, you can still join and make a real impact. My teams build things like: - In-app “experiences” like educating users about new features, and a lot more. - Data pipelines and ML models to figure out how to reach the right user at the right time - we only ever want to maximise engagement. Making progress on my sprint for Maria Gabriela Ochoa Perez Waechter's YIBL-BAM. On to STRY0006--adding a top level (L1) navigation link to create a new contact. I jumped back into the core UI and dug up tables and got it working, but it turned out it is much easier with a nice UI in the Experience's advanced settings. Typical for me! On STRY0007, I was adding a pre-configured list filter to show me contacts to whom I have not yet out, reached (???). This is the main list of lists you see in the left hand nav and it's very common to want to change these. In the old UI it was a right click and a couple of records, but this one had me scratching my head even though I had done it before. I found my way back to the UX List table, which has more checkboxes than almost any form I have ever seen (Literally 1 Million Checkboxes https://lnkd.in/g9Nv7ivi), but hey, I'm not here to judge. Is there an easier way? Probably, but I couldn't find it so I don't care about an "easier" way, just as long as there is "a" way. After many years in product I finally decided to take my first, and probably last, "PM course": Shreyas Doshi's Product Sense course: https://lnkd.in/g6Gm9YzU Why my last? I don't think I'll ever need to take another course after this. He asked our honest take, so here's mine: The premise of a PM course always felt ironic to me because doing product in theory is never *remotely close* to doing product in practice. Well, this is finally the course that is built for, and built by, product in practice. Name a product concept that you've banged your head against the wall trying to put into practice (I'll name a few: Product Sense, Product Strategy, Product Vision). You've already read 5 books, 10 medium articles, and listened to 12 podcasts, and still feel like doing it yourself is like grabbing water. Every one of those concepts (and more) has finally been decomposed, distilled, and packaged into something that can compare to working directly with a world-class product leader yourself. Do yourself a favor and take this course, there is nothing remotely close to it that I'm aware of in existence. Also: you will laugh - guarantee you'll experience at least 1 moment of catharsis as Shreyas Doshi skewers some aspect of the tech industry and our experience as product people within it.

Want to tease something my team has been working on over at Buffer! The attached image isn't a mockup, but a screenshot of a live prototype of RSS feeds directly in Buffer! It's only available internally and still pretty rough at this point, but we'll have it available for user testing soon. With this enhancement, we hope to help Buffer users easily find new and engaging content to share with their audiences. What do you think? Will RSS feeds in Buffer help you create more content?

📝 It’s the first week of the second half of the year. Engineering managers, here’s a few things that are worth doing. ⬅️ Review last quarter (Q2) Sit down with focus time and look back. Go through your team and project retrospectives and check against your mental understanding of how the team did and felt. Try to capture 2-3 aspects of the quarter that you think were absolute gold for the team and 2-3 that were misses. I find that the act of writing these down will help me understand the facts - do I have surface level understanding or do I know exactly how the team worked? At incident.io we have a way to channel customer feedback about what the team builds so I don't capture it again but if you don't have this I'd recommend sending over a few nice things customers have said about what your team has shipped. 📝 Recap first half of the year (H1) Most good managers tend to know how the team has done. It is worth digging a bit deeper and write things down. Did the team trend upwards or downwards? Even if a team has done well, the direction of travel might be wrong. One thing I love to do as I reflect on the first half of the year is to write down what I would have changed and done differently. And here’s the kicker: I then ask myself if some of them are still in time to be done - and sometimes they are but easily forgotten if you don't reflect. Especially changes to processes that get in the way. ➡️ Look forward (H2) 1. Start with something simple: are your people well rested? Do people still have 20 days to take or just 5? Useful time to nudge people. 2. What is the behaviour you want to change in yourself (and perhaps in the team)? No one is perfect and everyone makes mistakes - but without change (even if minimal) you end up being behind what you could be. 3. Have your stakeholders changed with any company change in goals? If so, meet them, align yourself and your team with them. 4. Is your team going to do work that introduce risks to the company? If so, write them up, raise them with you manager, and start work on reducing them. 5. It’s easy to overthink and plan for an entire half year - I’d recommend not doing that - keep it simple, nail the quarter (Q3) but make sure the direction of the team is right. 💬 Ask people for feedback You’re always thinking of all of the things. Usually not thinking about yourself. How well have you done? Do you know your blind spots? Do you have your top 3/bottom 3 for you to work on? Have you reflected on your work and how you drove the right outcomes for the organization? And finally, have you taken enough vacation? If not, why not? If the answer is “only I can do X”, you need to train and delegate. Rest is important - it grounds you, builds you up, and re-energises you.

I just wrapped up the Improving Your Product Sense course led by none other than Shreyas Doshi, and I can confidently say it’s been the highest ROI learning experience I've had. 💡 Here’s what made it exceptional: 1️⃣ Skills over Process: Instead of focusing on process and frameworks, Shreyas focuses on the meta skills needed to navigate ambiguity in order to make great product decisions. 2️⃣ Product Strategy Done Right: There’s plenty of noise around Product Strategy, but Shreyas provided a masterclass in distinguishing good strategy from bad strategy, with practical examples that hit home. 3️⃣ Learn by Doing:The hands-on assignments and breakout sessions were incredibly effective in reinforcing concepts through active learning. 🕸️ I’ve been working for top tech companies for the last 10+ years, and there is always a consistent problem we deal with. We work on complex, cross-functional initiatives that need definition, organization, prioritization, along with new teams and workgroups being formed that also need these things. A constant cycle of defining, re-defining, writing visions, re-visioning, prioritizing, re-prioritizing. We’ll do regular off-sites where we get together as a team and start to brainstorm plans for the next year. Sometimes looking at boring lists of work and long docs can make the process even more difficult. 👉🏾 We want to make thoughtful decisions, understand priorities and tradeoffs, collaborate as a cross-functional team—this is the key to speed of innovation and execution. And it's also a hard problem. So many opinions, so many tools.
