One of my favorite highlights of the All Things Open Conference is when I'm able to do a book signing. The reason I look forward to it is not because of the books, but because of the people who come to the signing. I genuinely enjoy getting to make new acquaintances, reconnect with familiar faces, and chat with everyone about their jobs, technology, their conference experience, etc. for a few moments. Many thanks to ATO for the opportunity, O'Reilly for the books, and especially to everyone who stood in line. Thanks for your interest in the book and it was a pleasure to see and chat with you all!

🔥 Fighting is FUTILE. 🔥🔥 Instead: BUILD | What if the very tools designed to amplify potential are leaving some of us out? This week I'm presenting my final graduate paper this term, I’m ignited by a vital and emergent mission: empowering women in leadership through AI and data. My research in IO Psychology explores how technology can break barriers, elevate voices, and create opportunities for women navigating pivotal career moments. AI holds extraordinary promise, but we must consider *and* care to engage in the conversation, the effort to ask the question: Who holds the reins of responsibility in this rapidly advancing field? And more importantly, how can we ensure that AI empowers everyone—not just a select few? This reminds me of the 2024 All Things Open Conference panel, “Open Source, Open Minds: Redefining DEI in the Age of AI,” hosted by the incredible Lisa-Marie Namphy. (Link to the recording in the comments) I am grateful to have met Jerome J. Sanders in person and to benefit from his considerable talent and experience. He posted about some of the most salient points. Some standout quotes from the panel (link to Jerome's post in the comments): 📍 “Women are 20% less likely to use Chat GPT in their day-to-day job than men are…because women think it’s cheating and want to earn that knowledge.” — Emily Maxie, VP of Marketing at Firm360 📍 “You can only dream as far as what you’ve seen…access and exposure to AI tools and the ability to expose them to the possibility…then they can take it and run.” — Denitresse Ferrell, CEO at Culture Refinery 📍 “Be ok with failing. People of color oftentimes have a shame associated with failure. Make sure that you are doing the best…not the right. Make decisions to move forward. With forward comes failure.” — Kenyetta Hall, MBA, CSM, CSPO Hall, AI Startup CEO & University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Professor 📍 “AI upskilling is a multigenerational journey that we are all on. It’s not just about empowering the youth and the next generation, but all generations.” — Jerome J. Sanders, Senior Product Marketing Manager at Cisco LLMS are powerful beasts that need to be fed. And we can cross generations, perspectives, fields to elicit our best in that effort. But it will not happen, well, by accident. "What human beings are and will become is decided in the shape of our tools no less than in the action of statesmen and political movements." - Philosopher Andrew Feenberg (Aidan McCullen of The Innovation Show) 💡 We have an opportunity to co-create an open, generative, and powerful future where all voices matter. We can use AI to augment all of our human-centered adventures. "You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." -Buckminster Fuller We can build. #Leadership #LiberateGenius #AI #IOPsychology #FutureOfWork All Things Open Conference Harvard Extension School
