Epstein is a research psychologist, editor, and author.

Robert Epstein is Senior Research Psychologist at the American Institute for Behavioral Research and Technology in Vista, California. He is both a researcher and a media professional, as well as the author of 15 books and more than 250 articles on psychology-related topics, including empirical studies in Science, Nature, Psychological Science, and The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. The last Ph.D. student under pioneering psychologist B.F. Skinner at Harvard University, Dr. Epstein is the former editor-in-chief of Psychology Today, a contributing editor for Scientific American Mind, and the founder and Director Emeritus of the Cambridge Center for Behavioral Studies. A thought leader in the behavioral sciences, he is typically interviewed more than 50 times a year by media professionals worldwide. Dr. Epstein has also hosted several national radio programs, most recently on Sirius/XM between 2005 and 2008. In connection with his magazine and radio work, Dr. Epstein has interviewed hundreds of top experts in mental health and the behavioral sciences, along with many prominent politicians and celebrities, among them: Laura Bush, Jimmy & Rosalyn Carter, Jamie Lee Curtis, Carrie Fisher, Susan Sarandon, Maria Shriver, Deepak Chopra, Dr. Ruth Westheimer, Dr. Joyce Brothers, Dr. Drew Pinsky, and the U.S. Surgeon General.
