GLAAD Media Awards: The Winners List

The 27th annual GLAAD Media Awards winners were announced on Saturday in Los Angeles. The show was televised for the first time in nearly a decade, airing in a broadcast April 4 on Logo. 

The awards recognize and honor media for their fair and accurate representations of the LGBT community and lives, according to GLAAD. 

The ceremony presented Demi Lovato with the Vanguard Award, and Orange in the New Black star Ruby Rose received the Stephen F. Kolzak award, given to an LGBT media professional who has made a difference in promoting equality and acceptance. Sense8's Lilly Wachowski also made her first public appearance at the awards show since coming out as transgender last month. 

Lovato, who also performed her new single "Stone Cold" for the crowd, received her trophy following an introduction by tour mate and close friend Nick Jonas. The activist singer said how excited she is to be a role model and LGBT ally. "I always knew that if I made it as a singer that I would need to use my voice for so much more than just singing," Lovato said to cheers inside the Beverly Hilton ballroom. "This award means so much to me, more than any music award because this is the real stuff."

Meanwhile, Caitlyn Jenner also took a turn at the podium, accepting the best documentary series honor, which was split between I Am Cait and the trans docuseries I Am Jazz about transgender teen Jazz Jennings.  "I'm honored to share this award with Jazz," Jenner said. "We have so many issues with trans youth, suicide rates and murder rates, and with your example with your show, it gives these young people hope that they can survive those very difficult times as they grow up trying to figure out who they are."

Jenner then explained how far she's come in the year following her transition. "Getting to know the people at GLAAD has been a tremendous experience for me. They have helped me so much, working my way through the land mines of the trans world in the last year. [GLAAD director of programs for trans media] Nick Adams, you're the best. We don't make it right all of the time, but we try our best to get it right when it comes to these issues." 

Two GLAAD Media Awards will hold another ceremony in New York on May 14 at the Waldorf Astoria. Logo will air Saturday's ceremony Monday, April 4 at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
