The Wrap Up

ALL-AGES RAGERS
There's plenty that under-18s are excluded from – most gigs, the right to vote, residents-only bingo games at Shady Gardens Nursing Home. But thanks to modern technology (and natural talent, sure) getting in the Hottest 100 isn't one of them, as evidenced by Kian (age 16, position #20, song 'Waiting'), Ruel (age 16, positions #87 & #89, songs 'Younger' & 'Dazed & Confused') and Billie Eilish (age 17, positions 8, 17 & 46, songs 'when the party's over', 'lovely' & 'you should see me in a crown').

#10YearChallenge
Tastes change slowly over time. Look back at the Hottest 100 of 2017 and you'll find 52% of the artists who made it in appeared again in 2018. But wind the clock back to 2008 – the year Kings Of Leon's 'Sex On Fire' came in #1, and the UN's International Year Of The Potato (unrelated) – and you'll find just two long-lasting tastemakers in the list: Kanye West (2018's #98, 'Ghost Town') and The Presets (#57, 'Martini'). Makes you think.

WE SEE WHAT YOU'RE DOING
Every year we scour the list for clues to what you're vibed on – and 2018's countdown had more clues than a certain non-verbal blue cartoon pup. Backing up Ziggy Alberts' 'Love Me Now' (#37) with Amy Shark's 'All Loved Up' (#36)? You get it 😉. Following The Rubens' 'God Forgot' (#32) with Alison Wonderland's 'Church' (#31)? Maybe you get it too much. Voting in Peking Duk – 'Wasted' (#55 ) after The Presets – 'Martini' (#57)? You know what? You're grounded.

LA DOLCE 100
Mamma mia! Is this the Hottest 100 or the Spanish Steps - because like a bella ragazza from Roma, songs from albums that have a title which is an Italian word (stay with us) climbed all the way to the top in 2018. From #1 – Ocean Alley's 'Confidence', from Chiarascuro, through to #45, Bring Me The Horizon's 'MANTRA', from Amo, and Ocean Alley again at #10 and #100 (with 'Happy Sad'), it was a big year for the ol' cowboy boot. Now THAT'S amore.
