Well, a lot of our favorite Riverdale characters are dead when this week’s episode opens… but luckily, people don’t stay dead in Riverdale for long.
We pick up with Cheryl mourning at the grave of Nana Rose, who was struck down by Percival’s plague that also took the lives of first-born kids Archie, Jughead, Toni, Fangs and Dagwood. (But Baby Anthony is still alive. Hmmm.) “We weren’t quite yet worm food,” though, Jughead assures us in narration from beyond the grave. Their bodies are being kept in a deep freeze by Dr. Curdle while Cheryl and the survivors figure out how to bring them back. Who do we know who can cheat death? Why, Sabrina Spellman, of course! But she’ll have to hurry: They only have 12 hours left before the victims are dead for good.
While they wait, the dead are enjoying their time in “the Sweet Hereafter”: Archie is married to Betty with a son named Fred and a daughter named Polly (aw!); Jughead is happily writing comic books in a booth at a ’50s-style Pop’s; and Toni is signing a peace treaty with the Ghoulies. (Plus, Baby Anthony is all grown up… and jacked!) Sabrina arrives at Thorn Hill and explains she specializes in death magic since she died herself once. Her boyfriend Nick Scratch sacrificed himself to bring her back, and now he’s in the Sweet Hereafter, too. (Let’s put a pin in that little tidbit, shall we?)
They’ll need a coven of six witches to resurrect everyone — and luckily, a quick witchification of Betty, Veronica and Tabitha gives them a perfect six-pack. They have to start with a single resurrection, and Sabrina chooses Jughead, passing through a portal to join Jughead in his booth. She tells him he needs to come back for the final battle with Percival, but Jughead doesn’t want to leave a world with endless hamburgers and comics. Besides, they’ll probably lose to Percival anyway, so what’s the point? “The point is hope,” Sabrina tells him, but he’s not convinced. So she gives up and lets him stay… but she does ask him for a favor. She returns to the living world with Jughead on her arm, but it’s not Jughead. It’s her boyfriend Nick inhabiting Jughead’s body! (Hey, he wasn’t using it anyway.)
Sabrina isn’t ready to give up on the resurrections, but she thinks it’ll work better if their loved ones go through the portal instead. (They’ll have to die first, though. Just temporarily.) Cheryl volunteers for Toni, Tabitha volunteers for Jughead and Betty volunteers for Archie… which leaves Veronica with no one. Sabrina notices and makes up an excuse why Betty can’t go so she can ask Ronnie to go in and retrieve Archie. Her response is perfect: “Sure. Kill me temporarily so I can go visit my ex-boyfriend in heaven. Why not?” The three girls all pass through the portal — while Sabrina and “Nick” (in Jughead’s body) sneak off for a quick reunion.
Tabitha finds Jughead at Pop’s with fans lining up for him to sign his comic books. She doesn’t want to interrupt his fantasy… but she’s joined by the angel Raphael, who has some news for her. Meanwhile, Veronica tries to bring Archie back, but he’s happy with Betty and the kids, and Cheryl goes back to get Toni and Fangs — and learns that her beloved Jason and Polly are still alive here! She returns to Thorn Hill, where Jason and Polly happily play with the twins… and Polly is pregnant again with triplets! The vision is so beautiful, it brings tears to Cheryl’s eyes. And on their date, Sabrina and Nick talk about running away together, but he reminds her that death will find them anyway. She hates that he had to sacrifice his life for hers, but he was happy to do it, and she has to say goodbye to him again as he passes back into the Sweet Hereafter.
So no one wants to come back. What now? Sabrina says it’s up to Cheryl to harness “the power of the phoenix” by burning their bodies so they can rise from the ashes. Cheryl chants a spell as the bodies burn, and in the Sweet Hereafter, the dead friends all start to feel the heat as they decide to return after all. A phoenix forms in the flames and flies off, and just like that, they’re all alive again! In fact, Jughead can hear again, too — and Cheryl brought Jason and Polly back from the dead while she was at it! Plus, Tabitha tells a despondent Veronica that it’s very possible “you and Archie are endgame… Your romantic future is up for grabs.” Plus plus, remember how Baby Anthony mysteriously survived the first-born plague? That’s because he’s “immortal,” Tabitha explains. She knows because Raphael told her… and because she’s actually Riverdale’s guardian angel. (Whoa.)
Elsewhere in “The Witches of Riverdale”: Kevin tried to escape Percival’s grasp and meet up with Moose in New York, but Percival grabbed him and tried to get intel about the girls from him. When he refused, Percival enlisted Reggie — who he elevated to the casino’s CEO — to execute Kevin, offering him Kevin’s healthy heart as a replacement for Reggie’s ailing father. Reggie considers it, but is visited by a doll of himself representing his conscience (?!) and changes his mind, planning to skip town with his dad and Kevin. They’re captured by Percival’s goons, though, and Percival schedules them all for execution. But Reggie has “an insurance policy”: one of Percival’s magical daggers.

I really want someone who has only seen season 1 of Riverdale to read this recap and give their honest reaction to it.
I watched the first 5 episodes & I can honestly say every time I check in with this show via recaps I get more & more confused…
That would be me. I stopped watching after season 1. I read this recap because I saw Sabrina in the picture, so was curious how she fit into the show (or if Kiernan was playing a different role) and I am at a loss. I am so confused. Did this show go supernatural?
Yes this season it went full on supernatural
I’m ashamed of how loud I laughed at this comment. LOL
As someone who watched the first few episodes I can honestly say I have no clue what this show is about anymore.
Frankly, you’re my favorite ‘commenter’, Wordsmith. But I’m surprised by this one. Frankly it seems like an invitation for non-fans of the show to criticize it. Of COURSE anyone who has seen only season 1 would be horribly confused by this ep. (You could say the same thing about “The 100”, which re-invented itself every season! Watch season 1 then read a recap of an ep in the final season, and you’ll certainly scratch your head!) If you’re looking for logical progression in a show like this, well, stop watching. But in terms of entertainment, after season 1, this season is off the HOOK re. entertainment, and I’m there for it, one last season. I’m with Erick below, it’s a dream come true! Lol. Wish they’d gone supernatural seasons ago!And I’m WAY past the demo target for this show! Lol. Read the original comics when they came out! Zoinks!
I stopped watching early S2. RD is one of the worst written shows of all time. Definitely one of the worst written shows on television at the moment.
One of the worst written shows ‘at the moment’, you say? Yet you stopped watching early S2? Do you see the illogic of that? Even if based on a recap reading. Lol.
Intense confusion!! Definitely a totally different show that just happens to the same cast and show title!
Yeah this is me. It feels like when a tv show does a musical episode that doesn’t really fit into the continuity of everything and nothing makes sense but they do it for fun anyway, except that’s the vibe of the whole show now.
I think this may be the most cleverly accurate way I’ve seen it described. Well done.
What the f… Is this ?
i watched the first couple seasons during the pandemic when there was literally nothing else on. This show doesn’t sound like it just jumped the shark, it sounds like it threw a whole shark tank into a Cirque Du Solei show.
I finished season one & started the second season, got midway in that season and . .I am totally confused.
Why oh why is Tabitha giving Veronica false hope about a future with Archie? The fact that Archie’s ideal heaven is being a family with Betty is pretty telling. And she saw for herself how happy he was. Time to move on for good, Veronica!
That is Archie’s ideal. Betty doesn’t want marriage or kids. I know what Betty wants means nothing to fans of that ship, but it should.
I dont recall Betty stating she didn’t want marriage or kids.Actually all she said was is thay she wasnt sure and the fact that she told the Trash Bag killer that the white picket fence is what she wants proves that she also wants the same as Archie. Her thoughts were clouded with the thought that she was same as her father whom groomed her to be like him ,a killer. Her journey with The Trash bag killer proved that she wasnt like that and the talk with Archie let her know that she wasn’t a bad person where he reminded her of the bird she saved and nursed back to health .The fact that she had suppressed that memory shows that her thoughts of darkness had taken over and she didn’t want that. She told TBK that she was nothing like him. That was the symbolism of what TBK was and what he represented. Her saying that Archie was the light in the darkness and she didn’t want her darkness to over take him was also a symbol of her not wanting that dark life.Sorry for the long responce but Betty does want that life and with Archie .She wrote about being in love with him since they were kids.
This was the crossover we wanted to see. It was great to see our beloved teen witch back in action & interacting with Archie & the gang. But it’s a shame that they had to wait until the second to last season to do it when they should have had multiple crossovers from the very beginning of the show. By the way, all hail Sabrina, Queen of Hell. And tonight’s episode finally undid the terrible finale of CAOS. Don’t you agree?
Yet Nick is still dead and we don’t where her family and friends ended up.
They are probably just fine & glad to have her back among the living where she belongs. Perhaps, there will be an update in the future, but at least, this undid the terrible ending of CAOS. And we know that Nick is at peace with the fact that the universe will always need Sabrina. Time in the Afterlife has softened him a bit, it seems & offered him some perspective. Let’s face it, Nick may have loved Sabrina, but he treated her badly & cheated on her, not to mention that his original function was to spy on her for her dad. Nick was a pawn of Satan just as much of Sabrina was in that he possessed his body & tortured him mentally, which is why he was more screwed up when Sabrina freed him of her father. That’s why he drank, & cheated on her, just to see if he could feel again. Never understood what Sabrina saw in him though.
Once again, Cheryl is the best character on the show. Maybe after next season, we can get a Cheryl solo series.
I’d rather see more Sabrina.
Everything about this crossover was a dream come true. I hope Sabrina comes back in the final season.
Love your enthusiasm. And totally agree!
It’s the crossover we’ve wanted since “Riverdale” first started. And this episode undid the awful ending of CAOS & Sabrina is alive & well & back among the land of the living, where she belongs. Glad, she had a final goodbye with Nick. Never understood what she saw in him though. He cheated on her. Maybe, he finally realized the universe needed her, but he had to die to learn that simple truth. And the dance sequence was typical Sabrina & I loved it. My only complaint was that there was no Salem! Sabrina without Salem is like the Man of Steel without his suit & cape!
I love how the episode undoes the terrible ending of CAOS & that Sabrina is back & among the land of the living, Never understood what she saw in Nick. He cheated on her & just treated her badly. But it looks like time in the Afterlife has changed his perspective. The dance sequence was typical Sabrina. My only complaint is that there was no Salem! Sabrina without Salem is like the Man of Steel without his outfit & cape!!!
If they don’t want to come back from the dead, then it’s wrong for them to be forced back. Yeah I know they’re all regulars who were never going to exit the show, but still I hope the witches get called out for what they’ve done. It’s worse than what was done to Buffy as they know where they are and what they want but ignore it anyway.
They each were realizing at the last moment that they had to go back. They just took too long to figure it out. So in the end it was okay… I guess. For a few of them.
I watched the first four or so seasons of this during the pandemic (it was a dark time, my pandemic low y’all). Stopped watching after that…now I’m just so confused by all these recaps, which I read just to see what all happened since I quit the show. What even is this thing about anymore. Yikes.
The collapse of this shows audience will always be one of the greatest downfalls of a show on the CW. I don’t mean this in a negative way, but how many CW shows do y’all know have reached lows of 163k(Season 6 Ep 12) viewers within a few years of hitting a million?(Season 4 Ep 1 – 1.14 million).
I stopped watching Riverdale in season 2 but I’ve kept up through recaps so that when my best friend needed someone to talk about episodes, I had somewhat of an idea. But I swear this show has now reached a point where the recaps aren’t helping lol. And it’s not the fault of the recaps. I show them to my best friend after she watches and she confirms they’re accurate. The show is just that wild now. And I just remember when it was a gothic drama about a missing girl and a murder. Now there are witches, angels and phoenixes.
We’ve come a long way.

Glad to know that Polly & Jason were in heaven though. They deserve it after everything they’ve been through.
Perhaps, Sabrina’s Aunties didn’t tell her the whole truth about what Nick did & Nick went along with it. It was great seeing our beloved teen witch interact with the “Riverdale” gang. Hope this isn’t the last time.
It’s a shame that Sabrina didn’t stay to help against Percival. He wouldn’t stand a chance against Sabrina.
Sabrina says that she will never forgive Nick or her Aunties for tricking her into this. There is a theory online that Nick lied to Sabrina about killing himself in order to be with her as a ploy with Aunts to bring her back. At least, that’s the most plausible explanation. Perhaps they will clarify it in a future episode.
They should of done this show as a miniseries and stopped at season 1. I used to love it now I just cringe when I do read the recaps
Honestly, I don’t have a clue why I still watch this show! I am not in the desired demographic at all and the show has steadily gotten worse with each season. I guess I just can’t quit a show after being invested in it for more than a season. Same thing with Flash.
I realize that the Internet Hive Mind has long since soured on Riverdale, but I stayed with it and have especially enjoyed the supernatural turn of this past season.
I loved seeing my fave witch Sabrina return this ep and especially liked seeing Cheryl’s powers get an upgrade. (Maybe she and Sabrina can team up in a spinoff after next year’s Riverdale finale.) And now that Betty, Veronica & Tabs are apprentice witches, I can’t wait to see them magically battling Percival in the final eps!
It used to be that people would like a show as wacky as this as a guilty pleasure. Well I am hugely entertained by this and no guilt involved. I have watched this show since S1 and am constantly amazed and amused by the changes made from season to season. Come on people, what other show is set in a never never land between 1950s gangs diners, vcrs, old horrors and representation of the modern age and recreates itself every season?
