Amazon, for the twin! The streamer has placed a straight-to-series order for a gender swapped TV adaptation of the 1988 big-screen thriller Dead Ringers, with Oscar winner Rachel Weisz succeeding Jeremy Irons in the dual role.
In what Amazon is calling a “modern take” on the David Cronenberg pic, the series finds Weisz playing the Mantle twins, who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes, including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s healthcare to the forefront.
Alice Birch (Hulu’s acclaimed Normal People) will write and serve as an EP alongside Weisz.
“As one of today’s most accomplished and versatile actresses, Rachel Weisz will captivate the Amazon Prime Video global audience with her take on these two ruthless, twisted characters,” said Albert Cheng, Amazon’s COO and Co-Head of Television, in a statement. “This update to Dead Ringers explores the darker side of medicine, obsession, and the human condition, making it a compelling addition to our slate of Amazon Original series.”
Dead Ringers marks Weisz’s most significant stateside TV project to date.
why… seriously, why? This movie was excellent and doesn’t need to be remade. Hollywood is full of original ideas, why do we need a 2nd, 3rd and 4th round of some of these tv series and movies. I can understand the Roseanne/The Connors, Fuller House, the new Who’s the Boss because these are the original cast or most of the cast coming back and it brings that nostalgia. Re-imaginings like Charmed, Perry Mason, Party of Five, and this are not necessary and most probably won’t make it in the long run. I really tried to give Charmed and Perry Mason a fair shake and was deeply disappointed by both. Not to say that either are “bad” tv shows, just that they are a poor imitation or in some cases a bizarre road trip away from the originals.
It’s not being remade. This sounds more like a television series based on the movie.
“Modern Take”. I don’t know that I would say the original Dead Ringers is lacking in modernity. I mean, they didn’t have IPhones and Instagram, if that’s what they mean. I’m not sure the gender swap makes it any more au courant than anything else does. The Cronenberg of it all is what makes the original a classic. It’s less about the trappings than the psychology and aesthetic he brings to it. I mean, I love Rachel Weisz, so it’s got that going for it, but I’m fairly skeptical.
Why not just bring back Ringer on the CW with Sarah Michelle gellar
THIS!!! I still miss that TV show
It was a great movie, but utterly disturbing and not something I wish to revisit.
Michael I will personally shoot you and your entire family for that opening line
