We now have a name to put to the Arrowverse‘s 2018 crossover event, which will unfold across three nights and shows this December.
The CW on Wednesday announced “Elseworlds” as the title, adding: “Chaos is coming.”
“Elseworlds” is thus the successor to 2016’s “Invasion!” and last year’s “Crisis on Earth-X.” In DC Comics parlance, “Elseworlds” among other things was a special imprint established to feature stories separate from DC continuity (for example when a Victorian era Batman hunted Jack the Ripper). What might that mean for the surprising involvement of Green Arrow, The Flash and Supergirl in Gotham City vigilante Batwoman’s business…?
Update: Additionally, TVLine has learned that LaMonica Garrett (Designated Survivor) will appear in the crossover as Mar Novu aka The Monitor, “an extraterrestrial being of infinite power.” Little is known about the “prominent role” the Monitor will play in the crossover, but given the character’s importance in DC Comics lore — Monitors are charged with observing the Multiverse, occasionally intervening in times of crisis — the possibilities are virtually endless.
As previously reported, this year’s Arrowverse crossover event will air Sunday, Dec. 9 through Tuesday, Dec. 11, comprised of the ninth episodes of The Flash, Arrow and Supergirl‘s new seasons. Guest stars Ruby Rose (as Batwoman/Kate Kane) Tyler Hoechlin(reprising his role as Supergirl‘s Superman/Clark Kent), Grimm‘s Elizabeth Tulloch (as Lois Lane), Lost‘s Jeremy Davies (as Arkham Asylum doc John Deegan) and Cassandra Jean Amell (as Mr. Freeze’s wife, Nora).
Does this mean the crossover be out of continuity? IE Oliver could still be in jail but appear in the crossover? Are these other world versions of Flash, Arrow, and Supergirl?
We shall see! #cliffhanger
Given that there are plans for a Batwoman TV series, I doubt their intent is cast the crossover as some out of continuity experiment. The casting of the Monitor obviously points toward “Crisis on Infinite Earths,” which “Flash” has referenced since S1. Could the AV be plotting some kind of merger, bringing AV characters from different dimensions together, or killing off some Earths? i can’t wait!
The core part of the Crisis on Infinite Earths comics revolved around the deaths of Flash and Supergirl. They won’t be doing that unless its with the versions on other earths or timelines. I suspect it will be more along the lines of the Monitor narrating a story from another time and place.
Maybe they will use this to merge Earth -1 with Earth-38
It actually makes a whole lot of sense given what we have heard. I’m assuming the whole story is based in a universe where all our mentioned heroes and supporting characters co-exist in the same world, apart from Earth 1 and Earth 38. It would also make sense with the news that ep 8 is the mid season finale. Usually these mid season finales have a cliffhanger of some sort. If the crossover is completely separated from the main continuity of the three shows, then the crossover would not have to bother to deal with the main events of the three shows.
So is Gotham not part of either Earth?
Or maybe all the shows will become just one Earth.
Gotham was mentioned in Supergirl’s season 2 premiere, when Superman protected a family from a drone attack and has had references hinting at Batman. Oliver mentioned Bruce Wayne and Gotham in the season 6 premiere of Arrow, so the city exists on both Earths.
This sounds very similar to the crossovers we’ve already had? Gotham setting aside, we’ve had alien AU delusions and alternate universes and other earths already. I’m not sure how this will be different.

Nothing beats the first crossover, imo.
The monitor…so are the Earth’s all merging into one Earth?
I think maybe that will happen.
They’ve realised quite a lot of news about the crossover and absokutely not of it interests me at all. Previous crossovers mattered because of what happened to our characters in them, but this seems to be a load of AU nonsense with a whole new show of characters casted. For the mid season finale it’s particularly pointless and irritating.
Since Season 1 of the Flash we have seen the headline “Flash disappears in a Crisis” dated April 2024. Could this crossover reference this event? They certainly know how to ramp up interest in the crossover. I was disappointed that it was going to be less than last year’s 4 hour movie, now I am getting excited again.
It would be cool if this were a convergence event that ended with Supergirl’s Earth 38 melding with the rest of the Arrowverse.
Too bad people..
I love it ! And happy see batwoman 👍
Love it crossovers! And can’t wait see Batwoman 👍
If the crossover is out of continuity they should air later, like in the middle of the winter hiatus, maybe as a Christmas special? I mean this will be very confusing to have it just after the (cliffhanger of the) mid season finale…at least as a special event it could be marketed as a “pit of continuity episode trio”. Anyway can’t wait.
Elseworlds titles are not “out of continuity”, they just exist in their own place in the Infinite Multiverse. Red Son Superman is as in continuity as the classic Superman of Earth-0.
I got all excited, I thought that was Khary Payton at first. “Cyborg is coming to the CW!” But also, my eyes are playing tricks on me…
plus he too busy running the Kingdom with Carol in the walking dead
Good title for the crossover event. Good casting for a new character for crossovers.
