Correct response: Who is Christopher Marlowe?
More information about Final Jeopardy:
A contemporary of Shakespeare, Christopher Marlowe (also known as Kit Marlowe) was a major Elizabethan playwright and was a great influence on Shakespeare. In 1593, Marlowe was accused of holding treasonous opinions, and after the “Dutch church libel” was published (which contained several allusions to Marlowe’s plays), Marlowe was arrested. While awaiting his trial at the Privy Council, Marlowe was killed under mysterious circumstances ten days later in an altercation with Ingram Frizer.
Shakespeare’s As You Like It provides the most famous tribute to Marlowe, where Marlowe’s Hero and Leander was quoted, as well as the “a great reckoning in a little room” line referred to in today’s clue.

Tournament of Champions projections:
With a projected 69 regular-play games to go prior to the Tournament of Champions cutoff, after 500,000 simulations, our model shows:
An average of 2.1568 5+-time champions (standard deviation 1.1836).
An average of 3.7189 4+-time champions (standard deviation 1.4397).
An early cutoff took place 0.391% of the time (or a 5-game winner will be left out).
Emma Boettcher qualified 45.564% of the time.
Eric R. Backes qualified 84.074% of the time.
Anneke Garcia qualified 57.753% of the time.
Lindsey Shultz qualified 24.059% of the time.
Dave Leffler qualified 4.468% of the time.
Andy’s Thoughts:
- Emma’s $46,801 is the sixth-highest first-game winning total in regular play of all time. (Thank you to those who have contacted me with a correction.)
- The Combined Coryat score for the game of $53,200 is an all-time regular-play record.
- James has been correct on his last 27 Final Jeopardy! clues.
- According to the prediction model, a score of $23,400 going into Final Jeopardy wins 86.868% of the time.
- Given James’ mean average score going into Final Jeopardy of $47,655 and standard deviation of $13,422, the chances of James having a score of $23,400 or worse going into Final Jeopardy are about 1 in 30.
- There was absolutely nothing wrong with James’ Final Jeopardy bet of $1,399. He knew that Emma was overwhelmingly likely to bet what she did and, thus, his only chance of winning was if Emma did not get Final Jeopardy! correct. $1,399 ensures that his score stays above Jay’s and gives James the best chance of winning the game. Had James gone all-in, he would have finished at $46,800 and lost by $1.
- 42.11% in first on buzzer is the worst that James did in on the signalling device since going 36.84% in his second game on April 5.

JUST HERE FOR THIS HISTORIC MOMENT, DON’T MIND ME.
Happy trails to you James. It will probably be a long time before another comes along that will match your bravado on your daily double bets.
Wondering if the 3 month break messed up James buzzer momentum. As he was in such a sync before the break, where he was getting about 66% right…
It seems that has a lot to do with Jay being a strong 3rd player (13 Right, 1 Wrong). In James’s second game where he earned the 36.84% he also had an aggressive 3rd player.
Review of 2nd game
James 22 R (including 1 DD), 1 W
Satish 18 R (including 2 DDs), 1 W
Marshall 15 R, 4W
Any comments which imply that all contestants did not play at 100% the entire time are out of bounds.
Moreover, in case this was not clear: today’s episode was taped March 12. James’ entire run took place before it began airing.
Ok…
To extend this: any such comment, as well as any that state or imply that the show interfered in the game play for or against any contestant, are allegations that the show and/or players violated United States federal law: https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/47/509
If evidence of such a violation exists, it should be brought to the attention of the United States Attorney for the Central District of California. Otherwise, respect James for his incredible accomplishments on Jeopardy! – and Emma for hers.
But at the end of a season or before a scheduled break, some contestants are going to have to take a break in there games..
It has to happen sometimes.
Ken Jennings won 38 episodes at the end of season #20 and won an additional 34 episodes at the beginning of season #21. I have no doubt that all his opponents in season #21 had seen him on TV
Thanks!
Emma reminds me a lot of Larissa Kelly, and it would not surprise me to see her win 10 games. Her Coryat in this game versus James as a predictor for future success should be taken with a grain of salt, as it came against one of the two or three strongest Jeopardy champs ever.
Correct. As I have seen people question James FJ bet.
So many viewers and even Alex’s comments on air seemed so shocked by this bet. James’s $1399 FJ bet seemed perfectly logical to me as well. James assumed that Emma was savvy enough to bet $20,201 so he might as well sustain his lock on Jay. Was that so unusual? I should think this situation would arise several times per season.
Does anybody know if Emma was a holdover from a previous taping?
Not in any way shape or form to diminish what she accomplished (she gave 0 incorrect responses), but simply curious if she was there to see him play, or if she showed up on March 12th having just learned she was facing a 32-day champion on the cusp of passing Ken Jennings’ all-time money record.
What a great treat it was to watch James. Now let’s see Emma go on a tear!
Her next chance to make history actually comes tomorrow – just one more win will vanquish the “Curse of the Giant-Killers.”
Each of the previous seven players who defeated a winner of ten or more games in regular play – Nancy Zerg (Jennings), Victoria Groce (Madden), Diana Peloquin (Chu), Brian Loughnane (Collins), Michael Baker (Jackson), Margie Eulner Ott (Wilson), Scarlett Sims (Rogers) – lost their second game.
Does anyone know the winning scores by these previous “Giant-Killers”? I do know Nancy Zerg won $14,401. Hopefully, Emma is not one-and-done!
Found out my own question! In their victories, Groce won 22,801, Peloquin 15,700, Loughnane 22,600, Baker 15,201, Ott 34,000 and Sims 33,201.
I, for one, hope to see the “Curse of the Giant-Killers” continue. It is part of Jeopardy! lore.
Jasper
Great run but so disappointing, that James didn’t get 2 records, I wanted to see broken.
Of course beating Ken Jennings Regular Season Total Winnings by $50,000 or 1 game probably
And having a big Average Daily win total then the previous high game winner of $77,000
As James finished his 33 Jeopardy games with an incredible average of $ 76,000. or only $1,000 short. Of the above $77,000.
All it took was for James to not find the daily doubles and for his opponent to go all in and answer correctly on one in Double Jeopardy. Even on the third daily double and with only a 3k wager by Emma, James couldn’t overcome the deficit. I also believe Jay played a big role as well, ringing in first and taking $11k off the board. As Andy mentioned, highest coryat score in history. Great game. I’m sad it didn’t work out in James’ favor.
Thank you, James, for making this Jeopardy! run interesting and historic. Also, congrats to Emma, I’m curious to see how she plays going forward.
Also James finding DD 1 on the 1st pick…So he could only win $,1,000 to go up to $1,000.
As usual, If James finds it on his 3/4/5/6 picks. He could have $5,000 to beat and he could go up to &10,000 total, DD bet, basically, as he got it on the first pick, he got no benefit of getting the DD1
And as we all figured, James not getting the DD 2 and DD 3 killed him?
Not just him not getting DD2 and DD3 but the winning player using good strategy (well I would have bet much more on DD3 if she had somehow heard or seen the results of Nate’s game) and more importantly, getting them correct! Even so, James was only a couple high value clues from winning this one still.
Steve, I’ve been thinking about Emma’s second DD wager too. James was trying to close in, but Emma and Jay were making that most difficult. Certainly James would have won, had he had the good fortune of finding DD#3; but that is not guaranteed–even for James! I’m thinking that Emma felt that the odds were better than if she had bet more and came up incorrect.
James played his game perfectly. He simply needed to find DD#3, but did not. For players like James, Nate, Adam, and Emma; finding DD#3 is the key to getting the all-important lead, heading into FJ. Luck plays a huge role!!!
I am upset. I just wanted him to beat Ken Jennings.
I want to thank James and ANDY for a very thrilling month during James run.
Andy, can you list where James games land in say the top daily games.
Like for example, Top 17, and 19, 20, 22, etc…
Or just lis5 out the top 30 Jeopardy daily $ winners
THANKS, MUCH APPRECIATED
I second Matt in thanking James and ANDY for a thrilling April 4th – June 3 run!
If he had to go out at least it was in a record-setting combined Coryat game in which his Coryat was $4,600 better, but because he only hit one DD worth 1,000 while Emma’s 2 DDs netted $10,600, costing him the lead and ultimately the game.
He continued his amazing DD streak and FJ streak to set the bar very high for anyone future wanting to beat his records…and Ken’s.
Again a thrilling ride for James and the future of Jeopardy and thankful for The Jeopardy Fan’s part!
