Few weeks ago I was at the Forrester Technology & Insights Summit and attended one of their brand new tracks focussed on building women leaders. Deloitte's senior board member China Widener spoke humourously and eloquently about 'personal branding' and had some insights that got me thinking about 'balance'. Throughout your career there are opposing forces and elements that you have to navigate to discover your own happy whole. Three of them stayed with me 1) Span of Control AND Span of Influence: Finding time to get out of your comfort zone and cultivating your influence by networking, mentoring, and sharing your expertise is important, because true leadership extends beyond formal authority. This when combined with inspiring your own team becomes a force multiplier. 2) Intellect + Context AND Skill + Ability: You need to get your hands dirty and execute often and magnanimously while using your strategic thinking and contextualizing to break down problems or prioritize. This dual approach is what can separates leadership from management. 3) Continuous Learning AND Connected Learning: Continuous learning is about personal growth and staying updated with industry trends, whereas connected learning emphasizes learning through relationships and collaboration. Embrace both by seeking new knowledge and building a strong professional network. This will keep you agile and well-connected in your field. I felt fortunate to become aware of these frameworks. While all of us do some or more of this in our work, being thoughtful and intentional about it helps you feel confident, capable and present. A handful of newly launched agency brands from India have mastered this art. Good wishes to all of them. But cannot help detect an element of 'gaming the system' in garnering visibility. Authentic Brand Storytelling Brands evolve all the time. Customers want fresh and new. To marketers and decision makers, even the visuals and messaging can get stale. There can be pressure from every corner to copy the brand giants of the day and declare “we should be more like Apple” or “we’re rebels like Harley Davidson.” But if you want a successful brand evolution, you’ll need to know how to change up your story, while staying true to the traits that made you successful. ✅ Your brand has to resonate with your target customers – If what they value is customer service, they won’t be along for the ride with a new “rebellious” brand identity. ✅ Be authentic to your company values. Branding arises from every interaction a person has with your business. If your customer service, stores and digital experience don’t live up to the story being pushed out by all your glossy ads and videos, you’ll just end up muddying the message. Ikea and Disney have very different brands and Ikea’s self-service, affordable home furnishings model would be incompatible with Disney’s magical theme park story. ✅ Tell a new story. Re-center yourself with your customers. If the brand is feeling a little out-of-date, is it because the customers themselves or the industry has moved in new directions? #Empatheticmarketing is seeing through the eyes of your #customers. To be truly customer-centric, #marketers must gain a deep understanding of who their customers are, the challenges they’re facing, and what motivates them to act. We must learn to think like our customers and walk the steps they’ll take to make a decision that improves their lives. After you understand what motivates them, you can give them what they want or need to solve a real problem they’re facing. Neuroscientist, Antonio Damasio discovered, “We are not thinking machines that feel, we are feeling machines that think.” Damasio made this groundbreaking discovery: when emotions are impaired, so is decision-making. What does this mean? We need to go beyond logic to understand how our customers feel. My blog post from 2018: 'In many product categories, a truly differentiating feature and a resultant benefit is difficult to find, maintain and nurture. Very often, the creative expression becomes the differentiating factor. In this quest to find such differentiating factors, brands tend to ladder the benefits and express a higher order benefit. Sometimes, the benefit is stretched so far that it comes incredulous and unrelated to the brand.'. However some have achieved great balance in just right level of stretch. Brand and Customer Service While there are many factors that go in in making a brand successful, and contribute to its longevity and relevance, there are also factors which cause a brand to deteriorate and lose its appeal. This holds true whether your brand is a consumer brand, or a business-to-business (B2B) brand. One of those factors is customer service. It can make or break a brand. Customer service is part of the backbone of a successful brand. Brands that prioritize customer satisfaction, responsiveness, and engagement build strong relationships with their customers, foster loyalty, and create a positive image that can withstand challenges and competition in the market. Investing in quality customer service is an investment in the brand's long-term growth and prosperity.
