After high school, Shirley Barrett drifted into a liberal arts program at Melbourne University but dropped out after two years and became a singer and songwriter for a band called the Fruit Pastilles. This band won a spot on a 3XY compilation of new Aussie bands called 'Undiscovered' (ELPS 4322) in 1982 with the track ''I Don't Ever Want To See You Again''. Epic released it on a single, the band made it onto Countdown and then they disappeared into musical oblivion. Shirley Barrett became a noted Australian film and television director. Her films included, Love Serenade, Walk the Talk and South Solitary. Shirley Barrett died from cancer in Sydney on 3 August 2022, aged 61.
