Morphology of the auditory region of the skull in Dinofelis sp. (Felidae, Canivora)

Abstract

Based on the analysis of a fragmentary skull from the Etuliya 2 locality (Late Pliocene, Khaprovian Fauna, Moldova), the auditory region structure of Dinofelis sp. is described. It is shown that distinctive features of the auditory capsule of Dinofelis are accounted for a peculiar trend and intensity of pneumatization of the tympanic bulla combined with unusual development of the mastoid tuber. This results from compromise of acoustical and trophic adaptations. Based on the analysis of structural similarity in the auditory capsule, it is impossible to resolve unequivocally the questions of relationships of Dinofelis with Pantherinae both with Machairodontinae and the taxonomic position of this genus because of a high probability of convergent development.
