From principles to action. Nearly 100 women from across WSP Africa came together yesterday to celebrate Women's Month through creativity, connection and conversation. With colleagues and leaders painting alongside one another, the afternoon was a powerful reflection of the culture we continue to build, one founded on inclusion, belonging and respect. Meet the Visioneer Lee Boyd: Technical Director (water resource management) Lee works at the intersection of catchment science, water quality, land use, and resilience. With experience spanning government, municipal, and consulting roles, she brings a holistic perspective to South Africa’s water challenges. Her current work on catchment assessments, Resource Quality Objectives, and water quality management plans underscores the importance of integrated systems thinking. Lee’s leadership reflects WSP’s commitment to reshaping resilience and safeguarding communities, industries, and ecosystems across Africa. Celebrating the next generation of water leaders! WSP was proud to support the Young Water Professionals Hackathon, developed with WISA’s Young Water Professionals. Launched in March, the initiative drew 78 entries from early‑career professionals and students, with 18 teams advancing to the finals in July. From tackling municipal water losses to building public confidence in reuse, the finalists showcased technical imagination and practical solutions for South Africa’s water challenges. Congratulations to AquaLink, Team IsOurH2Okay, Nontobeko Mngwengwe and all the winners recognised at the certificate handover. A big thank you to our WSP specialists who helped shape the programme, including Heidi Snyman, Jacques Schmidt, PMP, Pr. Reshaping resilience starts with bringing the right people together. Last night, WSP Africa welcomed leaders from across the water sector to our Water Leadership Dinner in Cape Town, bringing together representatives from government, municipalities, utilities, academia, industry, finance and the consulting profession, alongside members of the WISA and AWSISA Boards. The evening provided an opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the future of water across the continent, from water security and climate resilience to infrastructure investment and sustainable development. The discussions also highlighted the strength of WSP Africa One Water offering, which brings together more than 150 water specialists across Africa, supported by a global network of approximately 6,000 water professionals. Through this combination of local insight and global expertise, we are helping clients navigate complexity and build more resilient, future-ready water systems. Meet the Visioneer: Samuel Jacobs As a Senior Mechanical Engineer, Samuel designs healthcare environments where engineering decisions directly impact patient safety. His work focuses on HVAC systems that meet international standards while reflecting the realities of working in Africa from power reliability and supply chains to long-term maintenance. On projects like the Roha Advanced Multi‑Speciality Hospital in Addis Ababa, that means designing systems that balance performance, resilience and practicality - supporting infection control, efficiency and day-to-day operation. Youth Month | Giving students a closer look at the future of engineering We launched our WSP Varsity Open Day at our Cape Town office, welcoming student councils from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Stellenbosch University into our environment. As part of our WSP Africa Graduate Programme, the day was designed to give students a real view of life at WSP introducing them to the work we do, the people behind it, and the diverse career pathways across our business. Through office tours, technical showcases, and open conversations with our teams, students connected directly with colleagues at different stages of their careers gaining a practical sense of what their future could look like. What made the day stand out was the collective energy across all levels of our business from graduates and young professionals leading the experience, to experienced engineers and scientists actively engaging, sharing insights, and contributing to the next generation. Filtered tailings: Grounded in testing As the mining sector continues to prioritise safer and more sustainable tailings management, filtered tailings are gaining traction as an alternative to conventional storage. By removing most of the water, mine waste can be stacked in compacted layers, reducing the risk of instability.   Our tailings engineers Kiasha Naidoo and Veshania Balakistan found, performance depends on careful design, testing and water management. Their work explores compaction, moisture sensitivity and long‑term stability, helping to build a clearer understanding of how these systems behave in practice.   Originally presented at the SAIMM Tailings Conference 2026, this research highlights the importance of rigorous testing, strong engineering judgement and solutions tailored to local conditions. 👉 Read more: https://lnkd.in/dCJugw53     #WeAreWSP
