Going strong with the third week of Part 1! This is the half-way point of the first Part, which also means it's half-way through the Minimum Mood Track; if you're only in the game to make something small but mighty, you could be half way there this week!

This week's Minimum, Medium, and Maximum moods are: Enthralled, Happy, Indescribable

Some nicer moods this week, along with one that's a little more difficult to depict. Enthralled and Happy are straightforward enough, but what do you do for Indescribable? Do you have any thoughts on the subject? If you've made a mood theme before, what have you used for this mood? Need any help brainstorming? Or maybe you're working from the worlds angstiest fandom and actually need help with Happy and/or Enthralled? Let's talk about it!

Colour Me In Bath Babe

Work in progress! I've added in a cute carved comb to my Colour Me In activity which is still underway!

I'm hoping to spend a little more time on it in the next wek or so. This is the photo of the original paper version so it's not the latest version I'm fiddling around with on my laptop, but it will give you a bit of an idea how it's going.

The many other clothing specific ones are all now, and always will be, free on my website, but this one will be a collect in person at events where the bath display is set up.

At Historyfest this year, I will have this set up in real life as a kid's selfie station. Family lift the child in and sit next to them while we take a carefully framed picture on their own phone for free. It's a great momento of the event, and learning about medieval bathing practices from the hygiene display while they're in the tent too!

One of the absolute best things is when a like-minded individual shared things which you are keenly interested in! A gentleman who found my artifact collection online contacted me to share some of his wonderful find  with me and I couldn't be more thrilled!

This brooch was found in the 19th century during the excavation of an Alsatian castle. It was made in Nuremberg in the mid-15th century and evokes courtly love in the medieval period with its inscription "LIEBI" (German for "DEAR").

I am very grateful that the owner has granted me permission to share it, provided I credit the source as "Gilbert Charles Meyer Collection."

The Case of Affinity

So, I like Affinity Studio, I like the products a lot. I like the interface, I like what they do, I like the ease of use with vector tools, I like the range. They're very close to being an actual replacement for Photoshop in ways no other application has been before it. I purchased the total suite of Affinity 2 at launch for 100$, an incredibly affordable price and well worth the tools for photo editing, vector work, and page layouts.

Some time ago, the Affinity suite of applications' parent company, Serif, got acquired by Canva. There was concern about this, a lot about what Canva stood for and the growing amount of generative tools being shooed in with little oversight. But for a time Canva left the Affinity Suite alone and it made some wonderful advancements. Affinity Publish is a big reason why I was able to start making zines, as it's interface was easy to pick up on and especially intuitive.

A couple months ago, Affinity was made into a singular program and released for free, and I have some mixed feelings about that.

NOW

I have no complaints about the fact that they made free something that once was paid. I don't think that's a bad thing, I don't feel I'm 'owed' anything. I paid for a digital license, not exclusivity. I still have the installs and backups, I can install it wherever and whenever. And in some ways, I think it's a good thing.

When trying to teach people basic photo editing, there's an ease of use that simply does not exist for Krita or GIMP. You can certainly learn to use those two, but there's a very stark learning curve that can get incredibly frustrating. And then, there's the text tools. There's one thing very few free services have gotten right and that's text tools, GIMP is a lot better than it used to be, but both Krita and Inkscape have some very odd controls for text editng. I've guided a lot of tech-inexperienced people through a lot of applications, and the truth is, Affinity and Photoshop have consistently been easier for tech newbies to pick up on than GIMP and Krita.

When the announcement hit about Affinity being rolled into a new program and it would be free, the first thing I thought was.. 'Oh I finally have a free tool I can point a whole lot of people to that they'll be able to pick up pretty easily and learn from. I know a lot of 'non artists' that would benefit greatly from being able to have a tool to do minor image editing. I can make PSD templates and they'll work completely, intact text layers and all, in affinity. And that's before even getting into how people that want to make Zines and don't have the money for fancy software can now look to Affinity. Most the free zine makers are for the really small zines, and then scribus is free but it isn't nearly as robust as Affinity. Like, in a lot of ways, Affinity going free is honestly, kind of amazing for the overall accessibility of design.

The thing that I'm actually concerned about this distribution model, is the long-term access.

With the applications I pay for, I typically get access to previous versions that I can install as needed if a change happens that I don't like. This type of free model, one that isn't open source, these companies rarely allow for access to previous versions which means if it changes, you're often unable to roll back to a previous version if you don't like the new changes. And if they ever decide the project isn't worth it to keep onto anymore, they can scorched earth the whole thing and there'd be nothing for it. Or they can switch back to a paid model, but only subscription once again locking others out of the ability to work on their projects lest they conform and hope they have it saved as another format.

So while I'm very excited for there to be something viably comparable for matters of graphic design for anyone low or no income, I'm very wary about the future of what that might mean and the access to the tools in question.

In exciting news, I'll be speaking at a wonderful evening at the Abbey Museum of Art & Archaeology in April on Medieval Clothing: Dress Accessories, which will feature wine and charcuterie, my talk with close up images on a large screen of artifacts and research about the workmanship of dress accessories and a selection of high end reproductions and 14th century artifacts.

The artifacts and reproductions will be part of a white glove experience, where guests may carefully hold the artifacts in their own hands for a truly wonderful learning opportunity.

This week I'm gathering images and putting notes together which will form the basis of the presentation, but already I'm so excited to be sharing this! Many people have the idea that workmanship in the middle ages was rough and shoddy and I'm here to say it just isn't true!

Pouches, pouches everywhere!

A while ago I cut into all my scrap leather into circles to make little drawstring pouches, and last night I made a few. This is my favourite one so far!

I really like the blue and blue combo.

I've got other things to work on as well, so it might be a little bit work-on-it-watching-movies sort of thing. Braiding the strings takes a while and for some I'll be using leather thonging. Others I'll try to colour co-ordinate like this one, or accentuate with contrasting ones.

I'm currently updating my Neocities art site again and found two artist webrings that I thought would be of interest:

Neocreatives Webring - this one has grown so big (500+ artists) that it now functions as a directory.

Adult Artist Webring - this is MUCH smaller but I'm glad those artists have found a way to connect on a new platform after being kicked out almost everywhere.

Editing because I found a new interesting link via this post by [personal profile] katzenfabrik:

Reading that article made me thankful we have this space here.

Challenge #75: Romance

It's been a heady, romantic holiday season for some of us in fandom, so the first theme of 2026 is ROMANCE! You can draw characters from a romance, or put characters from any fandom, or no fandom, into a romantic situation. Or you can draw and paint anything connected with romance, whatever that means to you - like an anniversary, gifts, or a romantic memory. Make it as schmaltzy as you like, or as tragic and angsty, and don't forget "enemies to lovers", and other romance tropes! ❤️

The challenge will run through February as well, to cover Valentine's Day.

A round-up post for submissions to this challenge will be done at the end of February.

Here we are at the second week of Part 1, with three new moods!

This week's Minimum, Medium, and Maximum moods are: Determined, Devious, Energetic

What are your thoughts on this week's moods? Do you think they'll come easily, or do you anticipate more of a struggle? Maybe you could stand to rubber duck it a bit with your fellow participants or any of our cheerleaders? Let's talk about it!

I'm very excited to say that an article was recently published in the Abbey Museum of Art & Archaeology's magazine, Lindisfarne, all about my favourite thing! Well, my second favourite thing... Single Medieval Women! I've got to admit, my all time favourite thing is talking about all that behind-the-bedroom doors stuff from their lives!

It's a brief overview about who was actually single in society and what they actually did with their time whilst they were a small child, waiting to marry, or avoiding it completely!

If you'd like to learn more and would like to dip your toe into this world, you'll find an entire book, written by yours truly. It's not an academic read, because it's aimed at all of you lovely readers who know only what you've learned from Game of Thrones (oh no!) and enjoyed at your local renfaire (loads of fun but rife with historical inaccuracies!)

More paternosters!

You'll be getting sick on hearing about them, but to add to the range of for sale paternosters, I'm making some with just plain wooden beads in two colours. These will be the cheapest, just with wool tassels, some home spun and undyed and others commercially dyed in a red.

This will give me a few price ranges so a small momento can be had for a low price, but it can be nice too!

So here's the cutest of them all, the skulls paternoster! Technically, the original has little knots in between, from memory, but as this will again not be for re-enactors, I feel it'll be a good seller. I'm not making too may of these, as the beads are a bit more expensive, and I don't want to have too many sitting around and be out of pocket.

You've gotta admit... the goth crowd are gonna love these!

That's what barbie said in the movie and it was a floor-stopper! I've decided to make a couple of When Religion And Whimsy Collide... making some non historically accurate bead sets for the modern medieval woman.

This set is made of pink rhodochrystite (sp) stone with natural howlite stone gauds and a white silk tassel, hand made by me!

Barbie Thoughts Of Death would approve!

First projects for 2026

A new linear paternoster for me, made with garnet beads, white stone gauds and hand spun wool tassels. My first project of 2026.

Most of the new paternosters I'm making are looped ones with 50 beads, but in medieval art, we see unjoined ones, usually called "linear" and I didn't have one of those myself, so I thought it was time to make one for me.
