    What if AI could give time back to care? That’s the question at the heart of the work we’re doing with customers like Regis Aged Care. Because when AI is applied with humans at the centre, the outcomes are much more profound.     Built in partnership with Cognizant, Regis has launched an AI agent - RegiCare Assist - designed to lift their Clinical Care Managers away from paperwork and spend more time with their elderly residents. Long, detailed overnight care notes are distilled into concise summaries of clinical issues, with concerns flagged, helping staff step into their day informed and with a clear view of priorities.    For one Clinical Care Manager, that shift has transformed how she starts her day. What used to take over an hour each morning, working manually through reports that could stretch to 68 pages, now takes minutes. And that reclaimed time? She says she has more time to walk the floor and actually sit down with residents and listen to their feedback.     The impact goes beyond efficiency gains.     This was a fun recording with WebMD and Neha P. combining two of my worlds: AI/technology and my prior work with The John A. Hartford Foundation and IHI on the #AgeFriendlyHealthSystem. #Agefriendly care is fundamentally about centering what matters to older adults - their goals, values, and priorities. It's asking "What does a good life look like for you?" rather than just treating diseases. AI becomes an incredible enabler of truly person-centered care. So, what does the #4Ms Framework of #AFHS look like when enabled by AI tools? ·      Knowing What Matters: AI can systematically capture individual preferences across care teams. No more repeating your story - the system learns what matters to you and keeps that front and center. ·      Avoiding Medication Errors: We're closing safety gaps that have existed for decades. AI-powered medication management can prevent the 125,000 annual deaths from medication errors through smart dispensers, interaction checking, and adherence monitoring. ·      Improving Mentation: Isolation kills. Virtual companions and AI-augmented/supported health tools aren't replacing human connection - they're providing answers & connection when it is needed. There will be more evidence on reducing loneliness in the near future. ·      Preserving Mobility: Smart homes become extensions of clinical care. Sensors detect gait changes before falls happen, wearables spot early decline signs. We're moving from reactive to predictive care - that's transformational. Real Applications: Motion sensors for fall prevention, voice-activated emergency systems, smart medication dispensers. Start simple with basic activity trackers monitoring heart rate and sleep patterns. Getting Started: My advice for older adults - try using voice assistants (alexa, siri) for basic health information or medication reminders. Don't share personal health data yet, but start building digital confidence. AI is becoming a true partner in aging well - understanding unique patterns, predicting needs, keeping people connected to care and community. The potential to extend not just lifespan but healthspan is extraordinary.     A new WHO Regional Office for Europe –led review on telemedicine and dementia care offers timely evidence on how digital health can strengthen support for older people and their caregivers. Congratulations to Natasha Azzopardi Muscat and David Novillo Ortiz, PhD for leading this thoughtful and much-needed analysis. https://lnkd.in/e8ZAQ2VX The study highlights a clear pattern: when telemedicine and digital tools are integrated into age-friendly environments and supported by strong community networks, they can reduce depression and anxiety, improve social connection, and ease the daily burden on caregivers. Remote monitoring solutions also show meaningful gains in safety and symptom management, including fewer indoor falls and reduced behavioural stressors for families. Equally important, the review is honest about the challenges. Older adults and caregivers can experience fatigue or frustration with poorly designed digital tools. This reinforces a principle many of us emphasize across WHO’s digital health work: technology only delivers impact when it is usable, accessible, and truly centred on the needs of those it is meant to serve. With the population of the WHO European Region ageing rapidly—and the number of people aged 80+ expected to more than double by 2050—these insights are increasingly urgent. Telemedicine will not replace in-person care for dementia, but it can extend reach, strengthen continuity, and preserve dignity and independence in ways that matter deeply to families. As we shape the renewed Global Strategy on Digital Health, this study provides valuable evidence for designing person-centred, equitable, and context-appropriate digital health architectures. It also underscores the importance of pairing digital innovation with strong governance, community support systems, and investments in digital literacy so that older people are not left behind.     China now has more than 310 million people over 60, and the shortage of human carers is biting. That pressure has opened the door to a range of “smart nannies”: 1 - Friendly companions: Humanoid robots such as Xia Lan or Peipei chat, play chess and even dance. Think of them as Alexa on wheels - but with a face that blinks and a voice that asks how you slept last night. Their job is to curb loneliness, not to replace family visits. 2 - Extra muscle for daily living: Mechanical arms can lift someone from bed to wheelchair; powered exoskeleton suits help stroke survivors climb stairs again. An exoskeleton is basically a wearable frame with motors that amplify the user’s own movements - picture Iron Man, but in rehab. 3 - Mobile safety patrols: Camera-equipped “ward-inspection” robots roll through hallways, checking vital signs from a distance and sounding the alarm if they spot a fall. For elders living alone, the same fall-detection tech can be tucked into a small home robot. 4 - Robotic pets and playmates: Fluffy robot cats that purr when stroked and wheeled game-mates that deal a hand of cards give residents low-maintenance companionship and cognitive stimulation. These machines are packed with cameras, microphones and even radar-like sensors that track breathing and heart rate without wires. On the software side, large language models (LLMs) - the brains behind today’s chatbots - allow more natural conversation and can adapt to local dialects. “But is it safe?” China helped write IEC 63310, the first global safety standard for elder-care robots. It demands fail-safes (emergency stops, stability tests), encrypted data links and clear consent for handling sensitive health information. National AI rules add extra guardrails: no misleading medical advice and strong content filters baked in. Robots aren’t a silver bullet for ageing societies, and they certainly can’t replace human warmth. What they can do is fill care gaps, take on strenuous lifting, and give overstretched nurses an extra pair of “silicon hands.” Done right, they also create a live test-bed for advances in AI, rehabilitation tech and privacy-by-design engineering. As 2025 is being dubbed China’s “year of application” for elder-care robots, the real question is no longer whether robots belong in aged-care settings, but how we ensure they serve with dignity, safety and a little bit of charm.     7 wearable and sensor innovations pushing health beyond “wellness” tracking this month: 🔘 Sibel Health is developing an AI-enabled wearable that tracks scratching behaviour in people with atopic dermatitis, turning something usually seen as a subjective symptom into a measurable clinical signal that could also support drug development. 🔘 CranioSense is working on a non-invasive approach to measuring intracranial pressure, which today often requires invasive procedures, and if validated could make brain pressure monitoring safer and more continuous in routine clinical care. 🔘 University of Technology Sydney researchers are developing AI-powered sweat sensors that can decode body chemistry in real time, tracking hormones, medication levels and potential early warning signs of disease, potentially offering a non-invasive alternative to some forms of blood testing 🔘 ŌURA rings are being used within Medicare Advantage Plans, with around one-third of eligible members opting in and sharing biometric data, which is already leading to improvements in sleep and light activity and is paving the way for deeper clinical use cases such as hypertension monitoring 🔘 Samsung Electronics is preparing to launch an AI Brain Health tool that uses data from smartphones and wearables, including speech, movement and sleep behaviour, to help detect early signs of dementia while aiming to keep the experience privacy-aware and clinically relevant 🔘 Researchers at the University of Arizona have created a wearable mesh sleeve that monitors gait and subtle movement patterns to identify early signs of frailty in older adults, with the goal of shifting care from reacting after a fall to proactively supporting prevention through continuous remote monitoring 🔘 And China is testing “smart urinals” that analyse urine in real time for markers like glucose and protein, which opens up interesting conversations about passive health screening, consent, and how health data might be gathered in everyday environments. 💬We are steadily moving from episodic health snapshots to passive, continuous and contextual signals across movement, sleep, behaviour and even body chemistry. The core of my message? Imagine a world where "Age is just a number" isn't just a saying but a reality we live. With AI's prowess, we're on the brink of revolutionizing how we approach healthcare, especially for our aging population. We're not talking the distant future; we're talking now. AI offers us unparalleled opportunities to detect diseases earlier than ever before, often when management with existing therapeutics can lead to outcomes akin to a cure. It's about shifting our perspective from reacting to conditions as they surface to preemptively managing health risks, ensuring better quality of life for longer. During my journey from coding as a child to today leading Clover Health, where we provide Medicare to those over 65 and the disabled, I've seen firsthand the difference technology can make. But what excites me most is the potential to extend these benefits across the healthcare spectrum, empowering clinicians with AI-driven insights that augment their expertise. This is not about replacing human touch but enhancing it with superpowers of data and personalization. Moreover, this talk was a moment to underscore a truth often overlooked: We're all aging, from the moment we're born. Yet, rather than view this with trepidation, AI equips us to embrace this universal journey proactively. We can manage aging as we do any chronic condition, with vigilance, care, and innovation. The beauty of AI in healthcare lies in its capacity to make invisible risks visible, turning them into manageable aspects of our health.
