    Lately, there have been several major public drone show incidents. First, Orlando incident. Then, fire caused by jammed pyro drones in Vietnam. This is alarming. What’s even more concerning is that these weren’t small, inexperienced companies. These were big players with solid expertise, who should know how to handle things. We have to admit, not every company prioritizes safety. In the race to cut costs, critical steps are often skipped. I’ve personally seen projects where we declined participation due to safety concerns: only to watch other companies take them on. And when things go wrong, it’s not just one show that suffers, it’s the entire industry. Ironically, the companies that invest in safety suffer the most. Clients get scared and pull back from projects, insurance premiums skyrocket, and regulators tighten restrictions for everyone. I’ve worked with several equipment manufacturers, and I have never seen a report detailing how their systems behave in different conditions. And when you ask? The response is often: “We don’t know.” Some manufacturers genuinely have no idea how their drones will react in certain scenarios. I’ve also seen countless “trained” pilots who are nothing more than button pushers. They hit Start but have zero knowledge about real-time conditions or how to handle emergencies. I have yet to see a single video from manufacturers showing how their drones behave in critical situations. There are no benchmarks, no standardized comparisons between different systems. The industry needs structure. There should be a step-by-step guide for running a drone show - just like in aviation where every deviation from protocol is justified and documented. Pre-show site inspections should be mandatory. A full test should happen 1–2 days before launch. Every show should have at least two pilots: one actively controlling and another supervising. And so on. Safety isn’t an inconvenience, it’s a necessity. Talking about it doesn’t mean expecting failures. It’s like wearing a seat belt: it doesn’t mean you’re planning to crash, but you’ll be glad it’s there if something happens. It feels like the moment has come for the drone show community to come together and set real safety standards. Because if we don’t do it, someone else will - on much harsher terms.

The real challenge lies in the speed with which inexpensive commercial platforms can be transformed into tactical assets for intimidation, surveillance, logistics, or kinetic attacks. For governments, law enforcement agencies, and regional security partners, the response must move beyond reactive measures.     The U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency has released three new guides to help critical infrastructure operators understand and reduce risks typically associated with unmanned aircraft systems. The resources, part of CISA’s Be Air Aware campaign, cover #UASdetection technologies, how to assess and report suspicious drone activity, and safe handling practices for downed drones. The new guidance strengthens the campaign’s focus on helping organizations prepare for and respond to drone-related #securitythreats. Developed with government partners, #UAS experts, and industry leaders across critical infrastructure sectors, the resources expand CISA’s Be Air Aware effort by raising awareness of the #cyber and physical risks posed by drones and offering practical steps to manage those threats at facilities and public gatherings. They also align with CISA’s observance of Critical Infrastructure Security and Resilience Month, which highlights the importance of securing the systems the country depends on. The guides reinforce the agency’s push to deliver clear, actionable support as drone-related threats continue to evolve. “The release of these guides is a significant step in supporting the actions mandated under Executive Order 14305. AI-automated delivery drones are no longer futuristic pilots: they’re being scaled by Amazon, Walmart, and logistics leaders as a faster and greener alternative that could reshape urban delivery ecosystems. 💭 Most prior research treats the benefits (speed, convenience) and risks (privacy, safety) of drone delivery separately, overlooking how consumers actually balance them in real-world contexts. Even more, emotional outcomes like well-being and situational factors such as sustainability concerns, cyber threats, or medical deliveries have largely been ignored, leaving adoption models overly simplistic. 🔬 Using a large-scale 2×2×2 experiment with 3,212 consumers in France, we tested how product criticality (retail vs. medical), physical accidents, and cyberattacks shape perceptions of AI drone delivery. We show that environmental concern boosts adoption and well-being, safety threats heighten perceived risk and lower performance expectations, and high-stakes products like medical supplies dampen the positive role of well-being in adoption decisions. 💡 By extending acceptance models with risk, privacy, well-being, and contextual moderators, we offer a more holistic and realistic model of AI delivery adoption. Our findings reveal that sustainability can offset certain privacy concerns, that product criticality fundamentally reshapes technology acceptance, and that negative scenarios are central to understanding consumer trust in autonomous logistics. 🔗 The open-access link will be shared as soon as the article is online.     Drones are not just flying radios. They are flying embedded systems. That distinction matters. IOActive published a technical whitepaper by Gabriel Gonzalez on drone security and fault-injection attacks. The work focuses on setting up a platform to evaluate side-channel and fault-injection attacks against a commercially available UAV, with the goal of testing hardened drone modules that are not supposed to fall to basic embedded-device attacks. That is the interesting part: once a drone starts relying on secure firmware, trusted modules, update validation, or isolated execution environments, the attack surface moves deeper into hardware. At that point, the question is not only “can someone jam the link?” or “is the command channel encrypted?” The better questions are: - What enforces the firmware trust boundary? - Can the update process be disturbed at the wrong moment? - What assumptions does the secure module make about voltage, timing, and physical access? - Does “hardened” still hold when the attacker is on the bench with fault-injection equipment? - What happens if the device is captured, repaired, cloned, or analyzed after a mission? This is why UAV security belongs in hardware security evaluations, not only network security reviews. For commercial, law-enforcement, industrial, and defense-adjacent drones, the real risk is often below the application layer: boot chain, firmware update logic, debug exposure, secure element behavior, and physical attack resistance. “Military-grade” is a phrase vendors love. But if the platform has never been tested against realistic physical and firmware-level attacks, it is mostly a mood board. The better claim is measurable: threat model, attack paths, fault tolerance, secure update design, tamper assumptions, and evidence from real testing.     𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗥𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗮𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲: 𝗗𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘁 𝗧𝗼𝗼𝗹𝘀 Recent revelations from a BBC report (https://lnkd.in/esj8k_5S) uncovered a vast arsenal of surveillance tools, including 11 drones, IMSI grabbers, and over 500 SIM cards, used for hostile reconnaissance. This raises urgent questions: How much activity has already gone undetected, or continues to go unnoticed, and why are authorities not acting on reported concerns? Drones are increasingly exploited for silent surveillance, bypassing physical security and collecting critical data with high-definition cameras and advanced sensors. Combined with tools like IMSI grabbers, attackers can exploit many vulnerabilities to gather sensitive intelligence with minimal risk. 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 Despite advancements in Counter-Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (CUAS), many organisations still lack effective measures to understand, detect and mitigate drone activity. Our own detection systems have uncovered highly concerning activities resembling reconnaissance, which have been reported to authorities. Yet, the unquestionable lack of decisive action or investigation leaves critical and commercial infrastructure vulnerable. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗴𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 To address this evolving threat, organisations must adopt a multi-layered approach: 1. 𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗔𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘆𝘀𝗶𝘀: Understanding the intent and behaviour of potential adversaries is critical. Regular vulnerability assessments, including "red team" exercises, can simulate drone-based reconnaissance and uncover weak points. 2. 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗗𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Implementing CUAS solutions capable of detecting, tracking, and identifying drones is essential. These systems must also integrate with broader surveillance tools to provide a complete security and common operating picture. 3. 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: Staff training on identifying and responding to drone activity is vital. Often, early detection by personnel can mitigate potential risks. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗸𝗲𝘀 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗴𝗵 The tools identified in the BBC report highlight how advanced technology is being misused for hostile purposes. The growing sophistication of these devices, combined with their easy accessibility, means that security professionals cannot afford to overlook the risks. As security practitioners, policymakers, and technology providers, we must work together to close the detection gap and build resilience against drone-based threats. By investing in advanced CUAS technology and fostering a culture of proactive security, we can protect against future incidents of hostile reconnaissance.     Which CRE operators are using drone platforms that drive real ROI? We analyzed Drongegenuity, DroneDeploy, Structura View, Vid Tech, Birds Eye Aerial Drones, and SITE Technologies: I went to a UAV conference over a decade ago. Someone said drones would move us from a 2D world to a 3D world. It sounded mad at the time. Now it's happening. Nick at Insights by Blueprint spent two weeks researching how operators are using drones in commercial real estate. Not for pretty photos. For capital planning that drives ROI. And the operators who've figured this out are saving millions. Here's what Nick found: 42% of top CRE operators now use drones as routine portfolio tools. But here's what separates the leaders from everyone else: they're not using drones to make buildings look nice. They're using them to avoid catastrophically expensive repairs: 1/ Roof intelligence: One operator found moisture trapped under membranes using thermal sensors. Caught it early: $2/sq ft fix. Wait three years? $8/sq ft. That's not marketing. That's capital planning. 2/ Parking lot economics: Drones now map crack growth and pothole expansion over time. Build predictive models to decide whether to repair now or defer strategically. The data changes the conversation with ownership entirely. 3/ Façade safety compliance: Operators use drones to inspect building exteriors for loose panels, cracks, or spalling concrete. Alternative? Scaffolding at $50K+ per building. The tricky bit: Most operators assume you can just hand someone a drone and off you go. Not quite. One commercial broker thought they had it sorted: someone in-house had a drone. That drone crashed. $3 million in damage with a full NTSB investigation. Turns out any crash causing $500+ damage must be reported. And that in-house pilot didn't have $10 million in aviation insurance. Nick didn't just research use cases. He profiled and compared drone vendors operating in CRE: • Who's doing thermal roof scans • Who's handling regulatory compliance • Which platforms integrate with your existing building management systems The full report breaks down vendor capabilities, pricing models, and where each one excels. Because choosing the wrong vendor is just as expensive as not using drones at all. Three questions to ask before you deploy drones: •  Can we quantify avoided costs from inspections? •  Are we tracking condition changes over time or taking snapshots? •  Do we have workflows that turn drone data into budget decisions?     Most drone service providers are trying to build trust the wrong way. They lead with: ✅ Part 107 certification ✅ Flight hours ✅ Equipment specs ✅ Airframe experience ✅ Technical capability And yes, those things matter. But if that’s where the conversation starts, you’ve already positioned yourself as a vendor. Enterprise clients are not primarily buying your ability to fly a drone. They are buying outcomes. They want to know: Can you reduce project risk? Can you help their team make better decisions? Can you identify issues before they become expensive? Can you improve reporting, safety, documentation, or efficiency? Can you help them save time, money, or liability exposure? That is the difference between selling drone services and selling decision support. A vendor says: “I have 500 logged flight hours.” A partner says: “We can provide weekly progress monitoring that helps your project manager identify potential delays two weeks earlier, reducing costly overruns.” Same capability. Completely different positioning. If you want to move from low-ticket jobs to enterprise-level contracts, stop competing on pilot credentials alone. Your certifications get you in the door.
