Creativity and innovation are the driving forces behind successful marketing campaigns. Over the years, I’ve experimented with various tools and techniques to spark creativity in our marketing team, and it’s made a tremendous difference in how we approach projects and solve problems. Traditional brainstorming can be effective, but adding structure often yields better results. We use techniques like mind mapping (with tools like Miro or XMind) to visually organize ideas and find connections between concepts. This helps break free from linear thinking and encourages team members to explore new avenues. During sessions, we also use SCAMPER (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to other use, Eliminate, Reverse), a technique that prompts the team to think about problems or projects from multiple perspectives. Creativity often thrives through collaboration, and having the right tools to facilitate idea sharing is key. We use platforms like Trello and Slack to create dedicated channels or boards where team members can drop ideas as they come. indfulness exercises that help the team reset their minds. Studies show that taking mental breaks or engaging in mindfulness can significantly boost creativity. Even taking time for a quick walk or a stretch can lead to fresh insights when returning to the task at hand. AI-powered tools can be a great asset for sparking creativity. Platforms like ChatGPT (yes, even this one) or Copy.ai can provide prompts or creative suggestions to kickstart ideas when the team hits a creative block. These tools offer outside-the-box thinking that can lead to further ideation and innovation.

Creativity is not a tool limited to creative industries. It's a skill absolutely everyone needs to develop: Why is that? Creativity is something you can use in order to: ✅ Think of innovative solutions in business. ✅ Approach challenges from new angles. ✅ Adapt to brand-new change. If you're still waiting for that "lightning bolt" to strike, Eventually, you'll wait so long you miss your shot. Meanwhile your peers might have a system that allows them to get ahead. That's why I put together this Wheel of Creativity. It has 4 frameworks & 20 Qs you can ask yourself... That help you get out of any creative rut. 🧠 First Principles Thinking ↳ Strip everything back and build from zero. 1. What do I know to be 100% true here? 2. What if I had to invent this from scratch? 3. What’s just a habit, not a fact? 4. What would this look like if no one had done it before? 5. What’s the simplest version that still works? ⚙️ SCAMPER Method ↳ Systematically rework what already exists. 1. What could I substitute to make this better? 2. What ideas could I combine to create something new? 3. How might I adapt this to a different use or user? 4. What can I eliminate without losing value? 5. What happens if I reverse the flow, format, or structure? 🎨 Five A’s Framework ↳ Break down the anatomy of a creative act. 1. Who’s creating this, and what’s their voice or edge? (Actor) 2. What are they actually doing — educating, provoking, entertaining? (Action) 3. What’s the final creative product or outcome? (Artifact) 4. Who’s it for and what do they care about? (Audience) 5. What does the platform or medium make possible? (Affordances) 💭 Four-Stage Model of Creativity ↳ The classic flow of how real ideas happen. 1. What inputs do I need before anything starts? (Preparation) 2. What if I stepped away and let it breathe? (Incubation) 3. What’s the actual insight I want to bring? (Illumination) 4. How do I make this usable, testable, or shippable? (Verification) 5. What feedback or reaction will shape the next version of this? (Bonus!) The top 1% don't expect creativity to come to them... They create the conditions that allow it to thrive. That's the difference between high-achievers and average ones. What's your go-to method to inspire creativity? I'd love to read your approach in the comments. - - - - 📌 If you want a high-res PDF of this sheet: 1. Follow Chris Donnelly 2. Like the post. 3. Repost to your network. 4. LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® has become a favorite tool in my Creative Integration™ toolkit - the use of creative methods in corporate L&D. This facilitation methodology creates a new way for teams to communicate on a level playing field; so all ideas make it to the table. In my leadership development programs, when we get teams thinking with their hands, here’s what I notice: ✨ Hands-on learning activates a level of engagement and retention you simply don’t get from traditional methods. ✨ Building together gives everyone a voice—it's not just the loudest (or most senior) person who gets heard. ✨ Ideas take on physical form, making even the most abstract challenges something we can see, touch, and solve. ✨ The process speeds up trust and connection, which shows up in better alignment and faster decisions. And there’s a real business case, too: miscommunication costs even small companies hundreds of thousands every year. Creative tools like LEGO® SERIOUS PLAY® open up new channels for sharing, listening, and building understanding. #creativityisgoodforbusiness #leadershipdevelopment #teamdevelopment
