They’re both major players… but they’re not the entire picture. The real challenger is Groq. Why Groq stands out 🔹 Groq’s founder, Jonathan Ross, is ironically the original creator of Google’s TPU chip. In other words: the very person who helped build the “challenger” is now challenging it 🔹 The developer traction is serious: Groq has 2 million+ developers on its GroqCloud platform 🔹 Business model innovation: Groq doesn’t just sell chips, it offers “tokens-as-a-service” via its GroqCloud API, enabling usage-based inference pricing. What this means in the inference era The original narrative is correct that inference will dominate the AI compute stack. But by focusing only on GPU vs TPU, it misses the open-market challenger. Groq is built from the ground up for inference; not an after-thought of training. It combines: ‣ radically low latency and power consumption ‣ usage-based economics (tokens) that align with inference scalability ‣ a large and growing developer community and production footprint As inference becomes the recurring cost line that drives the next wave of AI infrastructure, then cost, efficiency, and scale will matter more than simply being the entrenched incumbent. Groq’s architecture + business model + founder’s pedigree position it to capture that shift. Final thought The inference era isn’t a two-player game. It’s a triangle. Nvidia will remain dominant in training. Google’s TPUs will play a role. But Groq is the open-market inference challenger that large AI operators, cloud platforms and infrastructure investors increasingly cannot ignore. According to a Higher Visibility survey of 1,500 U.S. users reported by Search Engine Land: • Google's share of general searches dropped from 73% in February to 66.9% in August • ChatGPT use nearly tripled (from 4.1% to 12.5% of respondents) • Daily AI tool use doubled (14% to 29%) • Even in local search (Google's traditional stronghold), AI use doubled to 10% This isn't a small sample. This is mainstream adoption happening in real time. Here's what's actually going on: • People aren't abandoning Google entirely. They're fragmenting their search behavior across platforms. • Younger users are blending TikTok, Instagram, and ChatGPT into their search habits. A question might start on ChatGPT, move to Google for verification, then land on TikTok for visual examples. Platform switching increased from 28% to 35% in just 6 months. The "never use AI" crowd shrunk from 28% to 16%. The browser wars just got interesting. Reuters reported yesterday that OpenAI is launching an AI-powered web browser in the coming weeks. Three sources familiar with the matter told Reuters that OpenAI will integrate ChatGPT directly into browsing, letting AI agents fill out forms, book reservations, and handle tasks without clicking through to websites. This is a direct assault on Google’s data empire. Chrome sits at the center of Alphabet’s advertising machine, which generates nearly three-quarters of the company’s revenue. Every search, every click, every moment you spend browsing feeds Google’s targeting algorithms. OpenAI wants that data stream for itself. The timing is perfect. The Department of Justice has already ruled that Google holds an unlawful monopoly in search and demanded Chrome’s divestiture. Meanwhile, Perplexity launched its own AI browser called Comet this week for its $200/month subscribers. The Browser Company released Dia in beta last month. Here’s what OpenAI gets right: they’re building on Chromium (Google’s own open-source code) but keeping interactions inside a ChatGPT-like interface instead of sending users to external websites. Smart move. If ChatGPT’s 400 million weekly users migrate to this browser, it creates a massive new data collection opportunity while potentially starving Google of traffic. OpenAI even hired two former Google VPs who helped build Chrome. In April, an OpenAI executive testified they’d be interested in buying Chrome if antitrust enforcers force a sale. This isn’t a coincidence. But… Chrome commands over two-thirds of the global browser market with more than 3 billion users. Safari is a distant second at 16%. Building a better browser isn’t enough. OpenAI needs to convince people to change their daily habits for something fundamentally different. This is one of the big fights for the future and Google isn’t sitting still. They’re already integrating AI features into Chrome and, as you know, Google has virtually unlimited resources and quite a bit to fight for. The web is going to become conversational, and whoever owns that conversation owns the web. OpenAI is betting that AI agents will become the new search engines, and browsers will become their natural habitat.

For years, enterprises evaluated AWS, Microsoft, and Google based on familiar infrastructure measures such as compute, storage, networking, databases, and global scale. Those things still matter, but they are no longer the center of the conversation. The real battle is now forming around enterprise AI platforms, especially Amazon Web Services (AWS) Bedrock, Microsoft Azure AI Foundry, and Google Vertex AI. What stands out most is that this is no longer just a cloud decision. It is an operating model decision for AI. Enterprises are not simply choosing where to run workloads. They are choosing where to build, govern, connect, and scale intelligent systems across the business. That is why the better question is not which provider is winning in general. The better question is which platform aligns best with your enterprise reality. For some organizations, Bedrock will make the most sense because it offers model flexibility within an existing AWS footprint. Where your data lives, how your teams work, how much governance you require, and how expensive it becomes to move data across environments will matter more than hype. AI strategy may look like a model discussion from the outside, but inside the enterprise it is often a data, security, and economics discussion first. My view is simple: there will not be one universal winner in enterprise AI cloud. There will be winners by use case, by workload, and by enterprise context. Let's explore what is changing and the challenges ahead to disrupt Google. 🔎 What are the benefits of an AI-powered search solutions like Perplexity? Perplexity has gained a prized spot on the bottom row of my cell phone. It is my preferred go-to source for deep research. It is excellent at breaking down long prompts and providing structured answers with citations and sources transparency. It allows you to switch AI models and to compare answers. I have been using Perplexity for over a year and have noticed my own search patterns gradually transition to it. 🚀 Is AI search going to disrupt search? The ability to understand natural language and deliver results that reflect a nuanced understanding of a query and provide contextual refinement to fine-tune answers is groundbreaking. This is as disruptive to search as Google's PageRank algorithm when it disrupted established search players like AltaVista, Ask Jeeves in the early 2000s. That's for the technology part. But Google is not without a response and has established strong barriers to entry. 🚧 Are new AI-powered search players a serious threat to Google? Google has its own response to AI-powered search with Google Gemini. The jury is still out on which solution is better, but the playing field is leveling as the skyrocketing progression of AI models slows down. In the 2000s, Google managed to overcome Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) as a barrier to entry. It benefited from the 1998 anticompetitive ruling against Microsoft which banned Microsoft from forcing PC manufacturers to bundle IE with Windows. It delivered a superior search product leveraging its PageRank algorithm. And, eventually, Google displaced Internet Explorer the dominant web browser with Google Chrome. By now, Google has created formidable barriers to entry: 📱In mobile, it controls the Android ecosystem. 🌐 In web, it embeds Google Search in Safari and owns Chrome as the leading web browser (65%+ market share). 🧰 In services, it has established broad control over individual digital services providing it with incredible wealth of data to deliver superior AI-powered services. However, cracks could emerge in Google's barriers to entry: ⚖️ Regulatory pressures on Google are increasing, especially in Europe 🤝 Partnership from players like OpenAI's partnership with Apple Intelligence could weaken Google's position. If one of these control points falls, this would certainly spell trouble for Google. This creates an interesting strategic dilemma for AI-powered search vendors: try to disrupt Google on its turf (general search) or double down on deep search use cases where Google is unlikely to compete.
