    My 80-year-old dad named his Chatgpt Bob. He talks to him every day. Bob helps him figure out what to cook for dinner, how to phrase a tricky note to a family member, and even reminds him when it’s time to take his meds or refill the bird feeder. At first, it was a novelty. Now it is a routine. And he is far from the only one. We are so focused on Gen Z’s digital fluency that we are overlooking the most quietly transformative AI adoption story unfolding right now. Older adults, especially those over 75, are not rejecting AI. They are integrating it. On their terms. In their lives. With profound results. According to a 2024 study from the University of California Irvine, older adults who used AI tools like ChatGPT, Alexa, or AI-powered apps for companionship, journaling, or Q and A reported a 30 percent improvement in daily mood scores over eight weeks. Another recent pilot from RiverSpring Living, a retirement home in New York, introduced an AI companion named Meela. Residents interacted with Meela multiple times a week. The outcome was unexpected. Anxiety dropped. Participation in social activities increased. One resident said she felt seen for the first time in years. Another said Meela helped him remember details from his past that even his kids had forgotten. In a survey conducted by Carewell, 78 percent of adults over 55 who used AI-powered assistants reported a positive impact on their emotional wellbeing. Among users aged 75 and above, more than half said the AI helped reduce feelings of loneliness or isolation. Let that sink in. We are talking about a technology that, when deployed intentionally, reduces social isolation, increases cognitive engagement, and helps restore a sense of autonomy to people often dismissed by the digital age. This is not about novelty. This is about need. AI is not just speeding up workflows. It is slowing down to meet people where they are. Voice-based interfaces are proving to be the breakthrough. No screens. No typing. Just natural conversation. And it is working. We keep asking if AI will replace human connection. But the better question might be this. For people aging in place For families spread across time zones For caregivers stretched thin For anyone who has lived a long life and just wants to be heard The answer, increasingly, looks like yes.     China now has more than 310 million people over 60, and the shortage of human carers is biting. That pressure has opened the door to a range of “smart nannies”: 1 - Friendly companions: Humanoid robots such as Xia Lan or Peipei chat, play chess and even dance. Think of them as Alexa on wheels - but with a face that blinks and a voice that asks how you slept last night. Their job is to curb loneliness, not to replace family visits. 2 - Extra muscle for daily living: Mechanical arms can lift someone from bed to wheelchair; powered exoskeleton suits help stroke survivors climb stairs again. An exoskeleton is basically a wearable frame with motors that amplify the user’s own movements - picture Iron Man, but in rehab. 3 - Mobile safety patrols: Camera-equipped “ward-inspection” robots roll through hallways, checking vital signs from a distance and sounding the alarm if they spot a fall. For elders living alone, the same fall-detection tech can be tucked into a small home robot. 4 - Robotic pets and playmates: Fluffy robot cats that purr when stroked and wheeled game-mates that deal a hand of cards give residents low-maintenance companionship and cognitive stimulation. These machines are packed with cameras, microphones and even radar-like sensors that track breathing and heart rate without wires. On the software side, large language models (LLMs) - the brains behind today’s chatbots - allow more natural conversation and can adapt to local dialects. “But is it safe?” China helped write IEC 63310, the first global safety standard for elder-care robots. It demands fail-safes (emergency stops, stability tests), encrypted data links and clear consent for handling sensitive health information. National AI rules add extra guardrails: no misleading medical advice and strong content filters baked in. Robots aren’t a silver bullet for ageing societies, and they certainly can’t replace human warmth. What they can do is fill care gaps, take on strenuous lifting, and give overstretched nurses an extra pair of “silicon hands.” Done right, they also create a live test-bed for advances in AI, rehabilitation tech and privacy-by-design engineering. As 2025 is being dubbed China’s “year of application” for elder-care robots, the real question is no longer whether robots belong in aged-care settings, but how we ensure they serve with dignity, safety and a little bit of charm. During my recent visit to Japan, I had the opportunity to discover the DAWN Avatar Robot Café, operated by OryLabs Inc. This café allows individuals who are unable to leave their homes — due to illness or disability — to remotely control robots and interact with customers. It is a simple but effective way of enabling social participation through technology. I had the privilege of speaking to one of the operators, a woman diagnosed with chronic fatigue syndrome, who shared how this job gave her a sense of connection and purpose. She no longer feels isolated, has made many new friends, and enjoys meeting new people every day. Today’s AI-driven robots aren’t here for laughs, though. They’re stepping into real roles helping seniors live independently, easing caregiver shortages, and even combating loneliness. But as we build our own “Rosies,” we must ask: will these tools empower dignity and connection or simply efficiency? When designed well, AI and robotics can go beyond convenience. They can help seniors manage their health proactively, reduce hospital visits, and provide peace of mind for families, bringing real value to the future of healthcare.

    Today, we’re humbled and excited to share something meaningful: an early look at the results from our first real-world study on how a foundational AI model for mental health can support people’s wellbeing - conducted in collaboration with New York University. This summer, over 10 weeks, participants used Ash on their own terms — at 2 a.m. when they couldn’t sleep, on lunch breaks, or during commutes. What we found was that Ash contradicted one of the most persistent criticisms of AI: that it isolates people. Instead, our users reported feeling more connected, more hopeful, and more supported, spending more time with others, and gaining, on average, one new person they could rely on. 72% reported less loneliness 75% felt more supported socially 95% made measurable progress toward personal goals Beyond social connection, users also reported meaningful changes in emotional wellbeing — with reductions in depression and anxiety comparable to those often seen in traditional forms of mental health support. Just as importantly, Ash excelled in all safety measures. It’s an early signal, but an encouraging one, that when designed thoughtfully, AI can be transparent, responsible, and deeply pro-human.     I find myself paying much more attention to AI stories where AI is simply… helping people. Not the latest model. Not the newest benchmark. Not even change management (which is saying something 😊). My last post was about AI helping to protect rhinos. This week, it’s about loneliness. I just listened to a New York Times story about an 85-year-old woman living alone in rural Washington. She was given an AI companion called ElliQ. She started with skepticism, but over time it became part of her daily routine, chatting with her, encouraging yoga and breathing exercises, playing memory games, and even reminding her to rest. She loved it! The most impressive outcome: at her next memory assessment, she scored significantly better than the year before. When her doctor asked why, she said she’d been playing memory games with her “friend” robot 🥲 There are important conversations to have about AI’s risks. We should and are having them. But I also think there is space to also talk about the ways AI is already improving people’s lives.     Thrilled to share my latest article dedicated to the economic and social impact of Humanoid Robotics. The Humanoid Robotics industry is not another deep tech trend; it is a dual strategic imperative—societal and economic. Global forecasts from the United Nations, OECD, International Monetary Fund, The World Bank, and World Economic Forum converge on the same picture: populations keep growing, while aging accelerates, dependency ratios rise, and working-age cohorts shrink. More people will need care, and fewer people will be available to provide it. Labor shortages already stretch #healthcare, eldercare, #logistics, #manufacturing, #construction, #agriculture, #defense #publicservices. Humanoid robots—built to navigate human spaces, use existing tools, and collaborate safely—can directly expand capacity where it's most constrained, from bedside assistance and rehabilitation to warehouse picking, inspection, and disaster response. The economic case is equally urgent. Advanced economies face stubborn productivity gaps, wage-driven cost pressures, and fragile supply chains. Humanoid systems raise throughput, standardize quality, reduce injury costs, and sustain 24/7 operations without rebuilding facilities—accelerating payback and lowering total cost of ownership. As onshoring and friend-shoring gain momentum, humanoids help reconcile higher local wages with competitive unit economics. Service models (Robotics-as-a-Service), outcome-based contracts, and predictive maintenance further de-risk adoption and align costs with value creation. Crucially, these robots could augment human workers rather than merely replace them—absorbing repetitive, high-hazard tasks while enabling people to focus on complex judgment, empathy, and supervision. That shift alleviates burnout, widens participation for older and differently abled workers, and fortifies national resilience. For countries and enterprises alike, investing in humanoid robotics is now core to competitiveness, social care capacity, and inclusive growth—not gadgetry.
