Continuous monitoring is changing the way poultry health can be managed. Instead of relying only on visible clinical signs or occasional diagnostic testing, ongoing biosurveillance and metagenomic sequencing make it possible to track microbial communities over time and identify potential health risks earlier. Establishing a baseline for each production environment also provides valuable context, allowing changes to be detected before they develop into larger challenges that affect flock performance. Early detection is only part of the opportunity. Repeated monitoring can also reveal how interventions influence the entire microbial ecosystem, helping improve biosecurity, evaluate management practices, and support more informed decision making. As predictive analytics and sequencing technologies become more accessible, continuous biosurveillance has the potential to shift poultry health management from a reactive approach to a more proactive one. “Continuous biosurveillance creates opportunities for earlier pathogen detection, earlier intervention, and better flock outcomes before visible clinical signs appear in poultry production systems.” Proactive monitoring represents an important change in poultry health management because it shifts attention from reacting to disease toward identifying potential risks before they affect flock performance. Continuous sampling provides a clearer picture of pathogen activity over time, allowing managers to recognize trends instead of relying only on visible symptoms. Earlier awareness supports more informed decisions, improves disease preparedness, and strengthens biosecurity strategies while reducing uncertainty during health events.
