In 2022, Dr. Jordan Carlson and fellow researchers received a grant from National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) to study the possible benefits of Kansas City’s zero-fare bus transit on health. This year's STAR 2.0 Program just wrapped up in July. During the 6-week program, students are paired with Children’s Mercy investigators to work on a research project that is presented as an oral abstract at the end of the program to Children’s Mercy researchers, staff and family members. Students also are given the opportunity to learn more about different areas of research, tour multiple labs and areas of the hospital and network with other students, researchers and medical professionals. The Advanced Neuroimaging Lab officially opened on August 14, 2024, with a mission to bridge the gap between research and clinical care by making advanced neuroimaging tools practical, meaningful, and impactful for individual patients. During fiscal year 2025 alone, nine research studies used technologies developed or supported by the lab. The lab also provided a successful summer research experience for students who presented their work at the hospital’s annual research symposium. The lab’s work has reached an international audience through presentations in South Africa, Boston, and Italy, with upcoming lectures planned for a neuroscience conference in South Korea. These accomplishments reflect the lab’s growing role in advancing neuroimaging research, mentoring future investigators, and translating innovation into better patient care.
