About us

Cities4Forests helps cities around the world to connect with and invest in inner forests (such as city trees and urban parks), nearby forests (such as green corridors and watersheds), and tropical forests. We encourage our over 90 cities to better conserve, manage, and restore these forests. We also provide technical assistance for them to align local policy, share knowledge, and access peer-to-peer learning and communication activities for cities to take collective action for the benefit of forests everywhere.

In 2015, urban heat killed 6,700 people across Europe. Nearly half of these deaths could have been avoided if #cities had trees covering 30% of their land 🌳. Our analysis of 60+ cities around the 🌍 reveals a clear gap: Large areas of plantable land are often underutilized. By expanding tree canopy in parking lots and along city streets, urban communities can meaningfully reduce heat exposure — and save lives. 🔥 Data from World Resources Institute's Global Nature Watch confirms that fires are burning more than 2x as much forest cover today as they did just 20 years ago. Wildfires can have immense impacts on #cities hundreds or even thousands of kilometers away: 🔺 Smoke from wildfires contributes to unhealthy air quality 🔺 Burning trees release GHGs that fuel climate change 🔺 Unstable soil is more prone to erosion and threatens water security 🔺 Decreased tree canopy & vegetation increases risk of flash floods While urban communities may be located far from forest fires, they are not powerless to do something about them. Today was a great set of conversations with the Oregon delegation offices of Senator Merkley, Congressman Bentz, Congresswoman Hoyle, and Congresswoman Salinas. We talked about the importance of healthy forests for reducing wildfire risk and ensuring small towns and big cities across the US have access to clean water. I also saw Congressman Bentz and Senator Merkley introduce the Wildfire Reduction Market Expansion Act--pretty cool. Special thanks to Congressman Bentz for spending so much time talking. WRI Africa's #Cities4Forests team is growing a healthier, more climate resilient Bukavu, DRC by greening the city in collaboration with its communities. Nature-based solutions (#NBS) are reducing flooding, protecting hydropower dams and creating green jobs, providing lessons for rapidly urbanizing cities across sub-Saharan Africa. 🌱Bukavu's restoration efforts offer one example of how cities can better protect communities exposed to flooding and infrastructure failures. Since 2023, WRI Africa's Cities4Forests team and local partners have supported a range of interventions, from restoring riverbanks and planting trees — yielding 50 hectares of restoration — to building a neighborhood recycling network. Together, these efforts are helping strengthen climate resilience in a region routinely disrupted by conflict while offering lessons for rapidly urbanizing watersheds across sub-Saharan Africa.
