Your Wearable Is Lying to You

You've probably got a wearable. Maybe an Oura Ring that tells you your sleep score every morning. A Garmin that tracks your HRV. An Apple Watch that shows your heart rate in real time. A Whoop that gives you a recovery score before you get out of bed.

And you've probably had this experience: the app says you're recovered. Green score. Good numbers. And you sit down at your desk and feel... not okay.

Or the reverse: the app flags you as stressed. Red. Low HRV. And you feel completely fine.

That gap — between what your device says and how you actually feel — isn't a bug. It's a feature of what these devices are designed to measure. The problem is, nobody's been honest about what they can't measure.

Until now.


What Your Wearable Actually Measures

Heart rate is simple: how many times your heart beats per minute. It tells you about physical exertion, basic cardiovascular fitness, and acute stress responses. It's real data. Useful data. But it's a snapshot.

HRV — heart rate variability — is more interesting. It measures the variation in time between consecutive heartbeats. A higher HRV generally indicates a more adaptable, resilient nervous system. Lower HRV often correlates with stress, fatigue, or illness.

Here's the thing: both of these are static measurements. They tell you the state of your nervous system at a point in time. They don't tell you how your nervous system behaves — how it responds to the world, and how fast it recovers.

That's not a minor distinction. That's the entire ballgame.


The Difference Between State and Pattern

Imagine two people, both with an HRV of 65 ms this morning.

Person A walks into a difficult conversation with their co-founder. Their nervous system spikes hard. Two hours later, they're still carrying it. The spike never resolved. They go into their next meeting already elevated, already reactive. By 3 PM, they're making decisions from a dysregulated state and they don't know it.

Person B walks into the same conversation. Same spike. But within 25 minutes, their nervous system has returned to baseline. They go into the next meeting fresh. Regulated. Clear.

Same morning HRV. Completely different emotional performance across the day.

This is what wearables cannot tell you. They measure the pond, not the ripples.


What React & Rebound Actually Measures

React is your sympathetic charge: how strongly your nervous system activates in response to a stressor.

Rebound is your parasympathetic recovery: how quickly your nervous system returns to baseline after activation.

In a study of 49 people over 4 weeks:

  • High React + Fast Rebound: average anxiety score of 2.04
  • High React + Slow Rebound: average anxiety score of 4.38

Same sensitivity to stress. More than double the anxiety — based purely on how fast the nervous system recovered.

Sensitivity is not the problem. Getting stuck is the problem.


Why This Changes Everything

Your Oura Ring can tell you that last night's sleep was disrupted. It cannot tell you that the reason you're still elevated at 2 PM is because of the email you read at 8 AM and never fully recovered from.

Your Garmin can tell you your morning HRV. It cannot tell you that your Rebound is slow — which means every meeting, every hard conversation, every decision today is happening on top of an unresolved activation.

Your Apple Watch can alert you when your heart rate spikes. It cannot tell you whether that spike resolved in 15 minutes or whether it's still sitting in your body three hours later.

Burnout is not a single event. It's a slow accumulation of unresolved activations that nobody was measuring.


What You Can Actually Do With This

When you can see your Rebound time — when you can watch it trend over weeks and months — you can actually test what works. Not based on how you feel on a particular day, but based on measurable physiological change.

Does your Rebound improve when you do 10 minutes of breathwork before a big meeting? The data will tell you.

Does a particular person, type of conversation, or time of day reliably slow your recovery? The data will tell you.

Is the intervention you're paying a coach or therapist for actually changing your nervous system's behaviour — not just your mood? The data will tell you.


The Wearable Revolution Isn't Over. It's Just Getting Started.

I'm not anti-wearable. I'm wearing one right now. The data these devices generate is genuinely valuable and has already changed how millions of people relate to their bodies and their health.

But we are still in the early innings. The first chapter was physical — steps, sleep, heart rate. The next chapter is emotional.

React & Rebound is not another data point. It's a different kind of measurement entirely: the measurement of how your nervous system navigates the world, not just how it rests in stillness.

Your wearable knows how you sleep. IN TRUTH knows how you recover from being alive.
