The “old dog” myth — and what neuroscience actually says about learning at any age

You have probably heard some version of this: you can’t teach an old dog new tricks. Past a certain age, the brain sets like concrete. Whatever wiring you have is the wiring you are stuck with. Best to play to your strengths and stop expecting much new from yourself.

It is one of the most persistent beliefs in how people think about their own development and it is also, according to more than forty years of neuroscience, wrong.

The idea has a real scientific pedigree, which is partly why it has been so hard to shake. Santiago Ramón y Cajal, the Spanish neuroscientist often credited as the father of modern neuroscience, wrote that in the adult brain “nerve paths are something fixed, ended, and immutable.” For most of the twentieth century, that was the textbook position. If you wanted to develop new capability, childhood was your window. After that, you were managing what you already had.

Here is what the evidence actually shows.

The brain keeps rewiring itself, on purpose, for life

Modern neuroscience built on decades of work by researchers including Michael Merzenich, one of the pioneers of adult neuroplasticity research has overturned Cajal’s model. The brain does not stop forming new connections after childhood. It continues to physically reshape itself in response to what you do, repeatedly, for as long as you are alive. Practice strengthens specific neural pathways; disuse weakens them. The wiring is not fixed, it is a living structure, continuously redrawn by your behaviour.

One of the clearest demonstrations comes from a study of London taxi drivers, who must memorise a famously complex map of the city to pass their licensing exam. Brain scans showed that drivers who had completed this training had a measurably larger hippocampus, the region most associated with spatial memory — than the rest of the population, and the longer someone had been driving, the larger the difference. Their adult brains had physically changed shape in response to sustained learning.

Yes, learning may take more deliberate effort and repetition as you get older. But “slower” and “incapable” are not the same thing, and the science does not support the idea that capacity for new learning switches off. It supports the opposite: the brain remains an actively adaptive organ at every stage of life, provided it is given something worth adapting to.

Believing this changes what you do next, which changes your brain again

This is where the neuroscience connects directly to leadership. Stanford psychologist Carol Dweck’s research on what she termed growth mindset found that people who believe their abilities can develop through effort behave differently from people who believe their abilities are fixed. They take on harder challenges. They treat setbacks as information rather than verdicts. And this is the part leaders tend to miss brain imaging studies show this belief shows up physically, in how deeply the brain engages with mistakes and difficulty. The belief is not a motivational nicety. It changes what the brain does in the moment of learning.

In other words: thinking “I am too senior, too set in my ways to learn this” does not just affect your mood. It measurably changes how much effort your brain commits to the task in front of you and that becomes self-fulfilling.

In sixteen years of working with leaders across Asia-Pacific, the limiting belief I encounter most often is some version of the old dog myth, usually dressed up in more professional language: “that’s just not how I’m wired,” “I’m too far along in my career to start from scratch.” It is understandable. It is also, increasingly, the most expensive belief a leader can hold.

The pace of change in most industries means the knowledge and skills that got you to your current role are guaranteed to need updating, repeatedly, for the rest of your working life. The leaders who thrive will not necessarily be the most experienced — they will be the ones who keep their capacity to learn switched on, deliberately, as a discipline rather than an accident. That capacity is not a fixed trait some people have and others don’t. It is trainable, backed by real neuroscience, and available to you regardless of your age or how long you’ve been doing things one way.
