ISSUE #25 - Twenty-Eight Years Later, Here Is What Partnership Actually Looks Like
Twenty-eight years.
Not the highlight reel. Not the anniversary post. The real twenty-eight years with the failed interviews and the one-income seasons and the surgeries and August 31st, 2019 and the drives to Worcester and the twelve-year argument about contracts and COVID and Ghana and everything in between.
That is what I want to talk about today. Not the version of partnership that looks good in a photo. The version that holds when everything else is falling apart.
What Long Partnership Actually Builds
It builds a trust that has been tested and survived. Not the easy trust of the early years when everything is hopeful. The deep trust that comes from watching someone show up again and again when showing up costs something real.
It builds a shared language that no new relationship can replicate. After nearly three decades, Samuel and I communicate in shorthand written across thousands of days. I know what his silence means. He knows what my hesitation means. That is not chemistry, it is history.
It builds the courage to disagree and the wisdom to know when to yield. We argued about contracts for twelve years. I yielded. He was right. And our partnership was strong enough to hold that disagreement for over a decade without breaking. That is what long partnership builds.
"Long partnership does not protect you from hard seasons. It equips you to walk through them without losing each other."
The Gifts That Only Come With Time
Being fully known and fully chosen anyway. Samuel has seen me at my most exhausted, my most uncertain, my most wrong. And he is still here. That is not a small thing. That is everything.

Shared memory. The ability to say do you remember and have someone who does. Who was there. Who lived it. Who carries the same story.
Growth witnessed. The Samuel I married is not who he is today. The Francisca he married is not who I am today. We have grown, individually and together and there is something profound about being loved through every version of yourself you have ever been.
To the Couple Just Starting Out
The early years are hard. The uncertainty is real. There will be seasons when you wonder if the partnership is strong enough to hold everything you are building.
Stay. Keep choosing each other. Do the work, on the business and on the marriage, in equal measure. Because what is waiting on the other side of the long faithfulness cannot be described. It can only be lived.
Partnership is not a destination. It is a daily decision. Every day you make it, you are building something that lasts.
