If you live or work near the coast in California, Texas, or Florida and hear the distinct hum of underground pumps running, you are likely standing directly above a hidden subterranean battleground. Most people think securing coastal urban drinking water requires building massive, multi-billion-dollar ocean desalination plants. But there is a far more elegant, invisible solution operating right beneath our feet: Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) Hydraulic Barriers. When coastal metropolises pump groundwater, underground freshwater pressure drops. Because saltwater is denser and heavier, the ocean naturally rushes inland like a wedge—poisoning drinking wells and permanently destroying the aquifer's storage capacity. To hold the line, regional water infrastructure agencies inject highly purified recycled water deep into the ground right at the coastline. Australia did not buy acres of land to build its massive new grid battery. It looked at 420 kilometers of coastal seawalls it had already built and realized the facility was mostly finished. The Spencer Gulf Seawater Battery Network embeds sodium-ion modules directly into coastal concrete defenses every 12 kilometers along South Australia's coastline. It uses seawater electrochemistry to trap outback sunlight. No lithium. No cobalt. No reliance on fragile international supply chains. By integrating battery housings into existing seawalls instead of buying land and pouring fresh foundations, the project bypassed the single biggest financial hurdle in large-scale energy storage. The most solar-rich landscape on the planet figured out how to keep its power using the ocean right next to it.

A Historic Milestone for New Mexico's Rural Electric Cooperatives Collaboration is at the heart of the cooperative model, and that spirit is driving meaningful progress across New Mexico. NMRECA, New Mexico's rural electric cooperatives and the USDA Forest Service have signed a first-of-its-kind statewide permitting framework that establishes a more consistent approach to utility activities across National Forest lands. The new framework will: Improve coordination between electric cooperatives and the Forest Service Streamline powerline maintenance and infrastructure projects Support vegetation management and wildfire mitigation efforts Strengthen the reliability and resilience of electric and broadband infrastructure serving rural communities Covering all five National Forests in New Mexico, this agreement represents years of collaboration and a shared commitment to protecting our forests while ensuring reliable service for the communities that depend on it.
