Operating in remote and fragile contexts shaped by conflict, climate pressures and competition over natural resources, United Nations peace operations have a responsibility not only to minimize environmental impacts, but also to maximize benefits for host communities wherever possible. This #WorldEnvironmentDay (5 June), we’re highlighting how investments in local infrastructure can meet immediate operational needs while supporting long-term community resilience. In the Central African Republic, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) partnered with UNOPS and the Municipality of Bangui to rehabilitate Kolongo, the area’s only municipal landfill. Supported by technical assistance from DOS, the project extended the landfill’s lifespan by approximately 12 years, benefiting both the mission and local residents who depend on the site. A key component of the initiative was training local personnel in landfill operations and maintenance, helping ensure sustainable, long-term impact and a positive legacy. United Nations Peacekeeping
