Behind the Swipe: The Crypto Card Payment Flow 💡 Ever wondered how crypto cards actually work at the checkout? First, there are two wallet types when using a crypto card: 🔹 Custodial wallet – Funds are managed by a third party like Binance, KuCoin Exchange, or Crypto.com. 🔹 Non-custodial wallet – You keep control of funds, but allow a smart contract (like MetaMask + contract) to manage a spending limit. Despite that key difference, the payment flow is nearly identical: 1️⃣ Tap the card – Just like any normal debit or credit card. 2️⃣ Transaction is routed – Via Visa or Mastercard through the merchant’s acquirer. 3️⃣ Issuer identified – Card scheme finds the correct issuer. 4️⃣ Authorization – Issuer freezes the equivalent amount in stablecoins (like USDC) and approves. 5️⃣ Settlement – Funds are transferred (often off-chain) to settle the transaction. 6️⃣ Merchant is paid – Transaction complete The interchange fee from each transaction is often shared between the wallet/exchange and the payment processor, opening up a significant new revenue stream.
