What did a summer afternoon in 19th-century Paris look like? 🍃 German artist Adolph Menzel’s ‘Afternoon in the Tuileries Gardens’ offers a glimpse, inspired by his visit to the city in 1867. During his stay, Menzel visited Édouard Manet’s independent pavilion, where around 50 works were on display, including ‘Music in the Tuileries Gardens’. Returning to Berlin, Menzel began work on his own vision of the gardens. While inspired by Manet’s scene, he created something distinct, capturing a lively, varied crowd enjoying the warmth of a summer’s day. This wonderful painting entered our collection thanks in part to a bequest made in memory of a loved one.
