There are six fully/partially reusable orbital launch vehicles in active funded development in the US: Starship, Stoke Nova, Neutron, New Glenn, Terran R, Eclipse. Up until today we've had at most one partially reusable rocket in operation. Yet still many people don't believe launch prices will fall. Crazier still, China has 14 in active funded development. For those who will fly on Chinese rockets, pricing may be even lower.

Alcântara isn't just a launch site anymore — it's becoming a place where Brazil builds its own hardware. The MLBR, Brazil's domestically-developed microlauncher, is now in advanced construction, with a launch targeted for this year. Two of its most critical systems are already built and flight-qualified: the telemetry system, which transmits real-time data from the vehicle to ground stations, and the Inertial Navigation System (SNI), which keeps the rocket on course without relying on external signals. This is a different kind of milestone than the ones this series has tracked so far. Chapter 12 covered why Alcântara's geography attracts foreign operators. This is the opposite direction: a Brazilian-funded, Brazilian-built vehicle — financed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation through FINEP, in partnership with the Brazilian Space Agency — designed to launch from Brazilian soil. Meanwhile, the infrastructure connecting the base to daily life keeps getting quieter attention. The Air Force recently completed renovations on Alcântara's dock, the primary link between the town and São Luís — used daily by roughly 20,000 residents for transport, services and trade. Rail, port, energy, minerals, pulp, offshore gas, orbit — and now, for the first time in this series, a vehicle actually being built in-country to reach it.

SpaceX has 3 different types of rockets. Right now it operates the Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy, and it is developing the next-generation Starship. RP-1 (Rocket Propellent-1) is a highly dense specialised kerosene that is used for its Falcon fleet and liquid methane will be used for Starship. Why does Elon Musk want to build his own midstream assets (pipeline and liquefaction plant)? "Musk has floated the idea of more than 1,000 orbital launches/year by 2028, a pace that Mobius pegs at roughly 0.2 Bcf/d of natural gas demand. I didn't know SpaceX does an average of 12 to 14 launches per MONTH. I was under the wrong impression that rocket launches are a rare event. The space economy is here. Commercial space companies have gone far beyond what NASA could have done. NASA continues to use liquid hydrogen as rocket fuel. Almost 70 years from the dawn of the space age, liquid hydrogen fuelling problems remain a persistent and highly frequent cause of delays for NASA's rocket launches. This is why I don't believe liquid hydrogen can ever be a fuel for aircraft (cost of fuel, need for 3x the space for fuel tanks on the aircraft and the need for a complete redesign of the airframe aside). "The aerospace giant plans to begin construction next month on an eight-mile natural gas pipeline dubbed "Starpipe" that will feed its Starbase launch facility in South Texas, according to filings reviewed by Reuters. The pipeline is expected to be operational by January and marks the latest step in Elon Musk's increasingly ambitious plan to control nearly every link in the Starship supply chain. Starship burns liquid methane-a lot of it. Each launch consumes roughly 630,000 gallons, and today that fuel arrives by hundreds of tanker trucks in a logistical headache that's fine for a dozen launches but completely incompatible with Musk's vision of eventually launching hundreds, or even thousands, of Starships every year. Pipelines solve that problem. Engineering plans indicate that SpaceX also wants to build a liquefaction plant at Starbase to convert pipeline gas into liquid methane on-site. New #LNG demand in Louisiana, USA! With the 3rd SpaceX launch site coming up, making the the ~12 MTPA LNG demand more realistic. In earlier post, my back of the envelope calculations came up with ~12 MTPA LNG demand by SpaceX for 9,000 Star Ship launches per year : www.bit.ly/4hdLuD4 This cadence start sounding more realistic if spread over several launch sites. SpaceX is buying and developing a massive ~136,000-acre (roughly 212 square miles) tract of coastal marshland in Vermilion Parish, near Pecan Island and Freshwater City, Louisiana, USA. This land is primarily owned by ExxonMobil (with surface management by the Vermilion Corporation ( a local private entity that has managed the surface and recreational hunting/fishing leases on this land for over a century, and not to be confused with Vermilion Energy ) and lies along the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, about 10 miles inland from the Gulf but with direct water access. This location is good for high volume launches into the Gulf of America.
