I finished setting up a new camera this week. The easy path was obvious: install the vendor app, connect it to Wi-Fi, and let somebody else’s cloud become part of my home network. I did use the app for initial provisioning. Then I moved the useful parts local: Frigate in an LXC for viewing and recording, Home Assistant for the integration, and an end state where the camera does not need the Internet for its basic job. This was not about turning a camera into a hobby project. It was about deciding what I actually own. A lot of “smart” products are convenient until the connection changes, the vendor changes its plan, or the service has a bad day. Then the hardware in your house becomes a request to someone else’s server. The same design question shows up in software projects too: what is the smallest useful thing that still works when a dependency is unavailable? For devices you run at home, where do you personally draw the line between convenient and too dependent on the cloud?

Before cloud-based storage became the standard, desktop search software transformed how users located information on their computers. Google Desktop for Windows was Google's desktop indexing application that enabled users to search emails, documents, images, music, chat history, and previously viewed web pages from a single interface. It also introduced customizable desktop gadgets and a sidebar that provided quick access to information and productivity widgets. Google officially ended development and downloads of Google Desktop in 2011, citing the industry's shift toward cloud computing and improved built-in search functionality in modern operating systems. Where does the harness happen — or should I still carry the laptop half-open? I'm talking to a lot of founders and operators, and no one is quite sure yet where the harness ends up. Everyone is building the harness inside their own apps, and also opening those apps up to 3rd party harnesses — mostly Claude Desktop and Codex — via MCP, API, CLI. This is a good mapping of AI adoption: https://lnkd.in/gy5gEa_e Many companies I know are at the 2nd stage — "one engineer orchestrates 5–10 agents at once, each on its own worktree or git checkout, jumping between them." At this stage, mostly everyone runs agents locally. But as we move toward the next stages and go to 100 and then 1,000s of agents running the loop, we need to move the harness into the cloud. Claude's cloud scheduled tasks and routines are early primitives of that — they can run 1,000s of agents in a fully closed loop and kick themselves off. Scheduled tasks are general-purpose. Routines are already specialized for coding — kicked off by a schedule, an API call, or a GitHub webhook, on infrastructure built for that one workload. So a specialized harness is already showing up inside a frontier lab's own product. I'm wondering where the majority of the specialized cloud harness ends up — in super agents, similar to local, or inside domain-focused apps. The recent open weight momentum might be an additional argument for steering the industry away from one centralized frontier lab harness toward decentralized, domain-specific ones — each backed by a specialized model tuned off open weights, running inside the apps we already use.

We’re making two updates across the AuditionAI platform: • AuditionAI Request Broker is being rebranded to Sidekick Server • AuditionAI Desktop and AuditionAI Server are being updated to .NET 10 Why the changes? Sidekick is a great name for the role this product plays. It fits naturally across both Desktop and Server, and gives us a more consistent product story. On the platform side, we originally chose .NET 8 for maximum capability. Microsoft has announced that .NET 8 will reach end of support on November 10, 2026. To prepare well ahead of that milestone, we’re moving directly to .NET 10. This gives us major benefits in: • Stability • Performance • Capability • Long-term support alignment More details on timing and rollout will follow, but we wanted to share the direction now. Excited for what’s ahead!
